"TRAVELIN' MAN" is my favorite by him. He starred with his parents and his brother on the Ozzie and Harriet show. His children had success in the entertainment industry, as well. Ricky Nelson, along with his brother, David, was featured on his parent's television show "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet" in the 50s. His father, Ozzie, was a famous bandleader in the 30s and 40s, so Ricky grew up in a musical environment. He recorded such hits as "Hello, Mary Lou", "Poor Little Fool", "Travelin' Man", "It's Up To You" and "Garden Party". He was killed in a plane crash in De Kalb, Tx (10 miles from where I now live) on December 31, 1985. Little Peggy March had a bigger hit with "I Will Follow Him" (this song repurposed into a female point of view) in 1963.

Ricky Nelson was an American singer, musician & actor. From age eight he starred alongside his family in the radio & television series "The Adventures Of Ozzie & Harriet". In 1957, he began a long and successful career as a popular recording artist. He was considered a teen idol & heart throb. He had so many hits such as "Poor Little Fool", "I'm Walkin'", "A Teenager's Romance", "You're My One & Only Love", "Be-Bop Baby", "Believe What You Say", "I Got A Feeling", "Hello Mary Lou", "It's Late", "Stood Up", "Waitin' In School", "Just A Little Too Much", "Travelin' Man", "Young World", "Lonesome Town" "Never Be Anyone Else But You", "Sweeter Than You", "It's Up To You", "Teen Age Idol" & "Garden Party". Sadly Ricky Nelson died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1985 at the age of 45.

This is one of the hit song in "Sister Act."
@thomastimlin1724 Жыл бұрын
It was a hit song long before Sister Act was even an idea...corporations like Sony buy up song catalogues and recordings, own them and use them in movies they fund or make. there fore the young hear these songs for the first time in another later decade and say oh that's the song from ]fill in the blank]. The good thing is it revives some of these songs for a new generation to enjoy, but the bad thing is the new generation is often misled to think the song was made FOR the movie. Like Unchained Melody by the Righteous Brothers [Bobby Hatfield] did a solo performance] 1965, used on the movie Ghost. I get so sick of hearing people say oh that's form the Ghost movie when the song stands on it's on merit 2 decades before, Ironically that song was from another 1955 movie called "Unchained." The movie was a flop but the song was successful when covered by singers of the day.

Sweet! The last time I heard "I Will Follow You" it was delivered as a football chant. Ricky Nelson "Lonesome Town" is a favorite of mine. Timeless. Nelson was more than a teenage idol, although he was that too for a while. "Poor Little Fool", "Travelin' Man", "Hello Mary Lou, Goodbye Heart" are all catchy tunes. He tells a good story of his life in the song "Garden Party" -- "Yoko brought her walrus, there was magic in the air" -- great company, great message too I suppose. Ricky Nelson teenage idol parlayed his fame into a role in the 1959 Howard Hawks classic Rio Bravo alongside John Wayne, Dean Martin, Angie Dickinson, Walter Brennan, and Ward Bond. Martin sings "My Rifle, My Pony, and Me". Nelson sings "Get Along Home, Cindy" and the closing theme "Rio Bravo".

Joey Robinson who commented here gave much of the facts on David Nelson who died in a plane crash back in 1985. He was taken way too soon. "The Ozzie and Harriet show" were a real husband and wife team whose sons were Ricky and David Nelson. It was a weekly staple on television back in the 50's & 60's when I was growing up. They were one of the first real families to perform on a television show. Lucy Ball and her husband Ricky Ricardo of the "I Love Lucy Show" were also a real husband and wife team back in the 50's & 60's. Ricky Nelson would always sing a song before ending the show for the day. I always looked forward to it when I was a kid. And this clip of him singing was on one of the episodes of "Ozzie & Harriet." Awesome stuff.

My very first album was a Ricky Nelson album. Before then I just had what we called 45s (These were records that turned at the rate of 45 revolutions per minute or RPM, even older songs from the thirties and forties were on what were called 78s which were thicker and larger platters than 45s. Each had a featured song on Side 1, with Side 2 having a lesser known song).

Ricky Nelson is probably one of the most underrated singers in American music history. He was the youngest singer ever to have a Number 1 album. From 1957 to 1962, Nelson had 30 Top-40 hits, more than any other artist except Presley and Pat Boone. His video of Travelin` Man is considered the first ever music video. He placed 53 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, and its predecessors, between 1957 and 1973, including "Poor Little Fool" in 1958, which was the first number 1 song on Billboard magazine's then-newly created Hot 100 chart. He recorded 19 additional Top 10 hits and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on January 21, 1987. Nelson is widely credited as a forerunner of the California-based country-rock scene of the 1970s. Ricky/Rick sold in excess of 500 million albums, and even today he is ranked the 4th biggest singles seller of all time. The Nelson family (Ricks Father Ozzie Nelson, rock legend Rick Nelson, and Ricks twin sons Matthew & Gunnar) are in the Guinness Book of World Records as the ONLY family in Entertainment with 3 successive generations of #1 hitmakers.

thanks for that, I knew that, but many people don't do the research [or just plain don't remember] , old and young, and think all Rick did was Hello Mary Lou and Traveling Man, even with the internet right at their fingertips [insert rolling eyes here]. They even forget he was an actor on radio first, and then TV with his brother and parents. Often when Rick was involved in the sitcom story he could be quite funny, with help from Skip Young playing "Wally," getting him and Dave into some kind of mess. When the show focused on the parents, kids would suffer through that episode just to see of Rick was going to sing at the end of the episode....he did NOT do that every week as many claim [as a child, I lived through part of that that era and I KNOW it was NOT every week] but quite often like every 3rd episode. He'd run out of material if he sang every week lol. Many don't realize that the great James Burton was his lead guitar player, and later was Elvis's lead guitar player during the Vegas years. Additionally, Rick was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame early on in 1987. Randy Meisner, before the Eagles , was in Rick's Stone Canyon Band...gee, I wonder where those guys got the idea for Southern California rock? lol

A little background: This song started out as a instrumental, "Chariot" by Franck Pourcel. Petula Clark released a French version of the song as well as an English version titled, "I Will Follow Him" in 1962. His father, Ozzie, was a bandleader and his mother, Harriet, was an actress who worked alongside such stars as Ginger Rogers. "The Aventures of Ozzie and Harriet" was a prime-time, half-hour family comedy featuring Ricky, his parents and his older brother, Dave. Of course, you can look at Ricky and tell he was a heart throb! Not only that, he had so many hit records. "Hello, Mary Lou" and "Travelin' Man" are a couple of my favorites. He was another musician that we shockingly lost in a plane crash.

He had twin boys who had a band called the Nelson, his daughter Tracy was a tween actress on a hit tv show.

Rick knew how phrase when he sang, real smooth. But he could also cut loose on rock and roll. More talent than people gave him credit for. Elvis used to call him "little brother." They'd often have Elvis team and Ricky team playing football when Elvis was out in California. This music was before the Beatles took over in 1964. You had Ricky on TV every week on the sitcom Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. this is the guy that taught me how to sing by example when I was little, and I am still singing.
