John's style of singing or genre is called heartland rock as he sang a lot about blue-collar, farmers & truckers themes. He has had so many hits especially in the 80's such as "Jack & Diane", "Crumblin' Down", "Pink Houses", "Lonely Ol' Night", "Small Town", "R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A.", "Paper &n Fire", "Cherry Bomb" etc.

Hi Shawn and Mel, that was really observant Mel! I never caught before that Black and White sounded like the melody of hurts so good, its a couple of notes off but now that you say it I can definitely hear the similarity. John's album "Rain on the Scarecrow" is probably one of my all time top 20 favorites. He has a lot of fun song like this one, but then he can also go really deep with the lyrics and make you think or tell a good story. Very talented man. He also has done a lot of work over the years to help the farmers in times of need. In the 80's there were a lot of mega concerts like Live Aid and many others that were organized to help charities. It just blew your mind to see these massive stadiums filled with people. John organized one called Farm Aid. And it brought a lot of attention to the plight of the farmers and to the heartland of America. I think my favorite song by him is "Minutes to Memories". Not one of his most popular but the story really spoke to my heart when I was in my 20's. Its about an old man and young man on a bus ride.

"Lonely 'Ol Night" is a great Mellencamp song to check out... he's written lots of great tunes, but "Lonely 'Ol Night" is still my favorite

"Hurts So Good" was a top-ten hit for John Mellencamp back in 1982. That was when he went by the stage name John Cougar. I saw him in concert that year when he was on tour opening for Heart. He was ferocious in concert. I enjoyed his show more than theirs! When you're ready for more from him, check out "I Need A Lover", "Lonely Ol Night", "Crumblin' Down", "Jack & Diane", "Pink Houses", "Authority Song", "Small Town", "Rain On The Scarecrow", and "R.O.C.K. In The U.S.A." among many others.

First song I remember by John and we loved it. Check out "I need a Lover"...its John at his absolute best. I had heard Pat Benetar's version lots of times and really liked it, but was blown away by John's. One of the very few times that the first version of a song did not stay my favorite.

1st, John Cougar, then, John Cougar Mellencamp, & finally, John Mellencamp. His handlers didn't like "Mellencamp" as a stage name. Any way you call it, he's a star. This song is another one one can listen to, & have fun with the lyrics.

I've loved his music since I was a little kid. He lives about 45 minutes away from me, and my dad worked with a guy from his town and knew him. Apparently his music is better than his personality according to that guy. But that's his opinion, I've always liked his music. My favorite songs were Rain On The Scarecrow and Now More Than Ever.
