Let's not forget how many "husbands" who didn't want to pay for divorce and spousal support had their wives commited to insane asylums so they could run off with Ms. Houchee Couchee ! My Aunty couldn't open her own checking account without her husband opening the account. She explained she had her own job and wanted her own account, the bank manager refused. She told him then you will see me everyday on my lunch hour standing outside this bank handing out notes to anyone who walks by of your business practices to women. After the first lunch hour the next day, he disgruntley opened her an account. This was early 60s in Calif.

Loretta Lynn says that by her count she has had 14 songs banned from select radio stations because she sang about life instead of what the industry wanted her to sing. She was telling the truth about what she was living and said that each time a song was banned it sold even better than before radio banned it, so she didn't worry if they were banned. She didn't see anything wrong with the songs, they were real life, but others felt they were scandalous for that time.

Loretta was banned for this song. She wrote a lot of her biggest songs in the 60s and 70s.... the women's movement was taking hold at that time. Sexual liberation of women scared the hell out of the average man and most radio and TV stations were in their control at the time. She was groundbreaking for sure. Her music became more topical as she grew older and more liberated. And many of her songs were about womens' experiences in general, not just hers personally.

Her younger sister Crystal Gayle also is a great singer. She grew up dirt poor & stayed humble & true to her roots. The autobiographical movie "Coal Miner's Daughter" is worth looking at.

I remember when I was just barely in Jr. High, I heard this song on the radio. We lived in rural Georgia at the time.... A while later, I was listening to the radio and the DJ on the radio apologized for playing the song and said that it wouldn't be played on that station any more! That just made me turn to another station to see if they would play it! I finally heard it again and really listened to it and it was wonderful! Those self-righteous hypocrites were really torn because they loved Loretta Lynn but felt that the song was against their narrow-minded, misogynistic beliefs!

She said after she recorded it Doo told her that was the filthiest song he had ever heard. Loretta music is very real and that's what made her the great artist that she is. I'm a superfan. ❤❤ but Ive only got to see her in concert once probably 6 or 7 years ago. The whole audience just sat there in awe. You just couldn't take your eyes off her. In most concerts people are talking, running to the restroom, running to get drinks...not at Loretta's concert. She was just sitting in a chair on the stage with her great band singing her sings and telling stories. All 5000 of us were just in awe with full attention on her. One of my favorite memories for sure.

Great reaction!! There's a quote from a country doctor about how this song did more to let country women think about birth control than the doctors. She had 4 kids by the time she was 20 (married at 14). It was one of many songs that was banned from radio and TV.

My great grandmother had 17 children...I had a doctor who had 14 children & my Avon lady ( in the 1990s) was pregnant with her 18th child. In the times of my great grandparents, folks often came from working farms and having many children to maintain the farms & passing them on to family was considered an asset for that reason. Also because in those days you could lose a child due to simple things like an injury or a simple thing like a kidney infection or illness/ virus (no antibiotics back then). My Avon lady & her hubby were practicing Catholics. She told me (in confidence) that she wanted her tubes tied after delivering the one she was carrying, but her husband said no & she was afraid to take birth control pills. My doctor told me that every time her husband (also a doctor) and her went on vacation, she always ended up pregnant (they were also Catholics)..she told me, she was going to tell him no more vacations!! SMH.

When the pill came out it was a very controversial time, and this song was a rallying cry to many of the women in my mother's generation. They were so brave, and did so much to lay the ground work of many of the freedoms we as women today take for granted. I wish that their contribution was remembered more. Or that they would make a movie about that time period. Women's Lib was not just women in the street burning their bras and protesting. It was millions of housewives deciding that they wanted their daughters to have a better life. They fought and endured so much persecution just to be able to support their families and make a decent wage that was equal to the pay that a man received for the same job. They opened doors that we all just take for granted. Loretta was one of those women who was brave enough to speak her truth, while at the same time being a feminine and beautiful person.

I checked the songs but am assuming I may be adding to votes for songs already, although some are great but lesser known: "Honky Tonk Girl," (best version on Greatest Hits, it's on KZbin. ); "When the Tingle Becomes a Chill," "Wings Upon Your Horns," "I Want You Outta My Head and Back in My Bed," "You're Squaw is in the Warpath Tonight," "Don't Come Home A' Drinking With Lovin' On Your Mind" and "You're Looking at Country." "Blue Kentucky Girl," I believe she covered, but not sure. Loretta has an anthology collection with covers of her friend, Patsy Cline's, songs and they are surprisingly good. Of course, "One's On The Way" was probably suggested. Later in life, Loretta and Willie Nelson have a duet called "Lay Me Down." It's gospel-like and very good. Strong vocals from Loretta. Oh, she did a duet with Ernest Tubb, I think, early on, called "Mr. and Mes. Used To Be" that was good. Have fun! Enjoy your videos!

This was one of quite a few of her compositions banned by country radio because of censorship. This song is great and another of her banned songs that I hold in high regard is “Rated X.” Loretta was the first female gangsta artist who used her gift of songwriting for marriage counselling, for giving her husband’s side women a warning that she knew exactly what was going on, and helping to bring women’s liberation out to the country. She had the platform and used it wisely and never as a gimmick. On top of all this, she was still a humble and kind woman; as long as you didn’t cross the line.
