She was married to her husband "Doolittle" when she was only 13 years old. He was a rounder who loved to drink and fight. An urban legend (myth or truth depending on who is telling it) says that he once slapped Loretta around, and Conway Twitty said if he ever laid another hand on her it'd be the last thing he ever did. That's when country was based on real hard living, not this pop-lite stuff they have now.

I love Loretta too. Her music is so honest, it cuts right to the core of the issue. The movie about her life Coal Miner's Daughter came out when I was high school. Seeing all that we she went through in her life , really taught me some valuable life lessons just when I needed them the most. I bought the sound track album to the movie and listened to the record every day after school. I love people who are sassy and honest about their experiences in life. It really helps the younger generation to know they are not alone, and that what they feel has been felt by others before them. Her and Dolly Parton, have taught me a lot about life and how as women, we must show courage and teach people how we want to be treated in this world. I really enjoy this rabbit hole and hope you will continue to do more Loretta songs in the future. Its always a treat! :)

You really need to watch Coal Miner's Daughter. Many of her songs came from her personal life. Loretta hand picked Cissy Spacek to play her and Cissy actually did her own singing. It was some of her best work. I think you would love the movie and learn about Loretta's life. She has had a lot of tragedy in her life.
@karenmorrisette50272 жыл бұрын
SHE wrote ALL of her songs from her personal life. Mooney inspired most all of them, that's from her own mouth. I been a fan for 55yrs. She's lived in my home county since 66. I was 4yrs old and at 5yrs old my granny started playing me her records. I'd dance with her to the songs. Her ranch is 3500 acres and has a county road running thru it. When my hometown of Waverly was flooded back in August she raised over a million dollars to help ppl rebuild cause we lost 45% of the town including the only 3 schools we had. She paid to have them rebuilt. All while mourning the loss of her foreman Wayne Spears, a personal friend of mine from when I worked on the ranch in 1980 giving trail rides. I'm still mourning the loss of my hometown and my granny's house had 5ft of water in it. Its being rebuilt differently and it'll never be the same. "You can never go home again" is so true.

I'm happy that y'all have discovered Loretta Lynn. The previous comments are all correct in that they characterize her talent and work as among the very best in Country music and served as a large contribution to the American song book. I believe also that this is a great opportunity for me to introduce y'all to Crystal Gayle whose career began in 1978 with a hugely successful hit, "Don't it Make my Brown eyes Blue." Crystal's real name is Brenda Webb and she is the youngest sister of Loretta Webb Lynn whom you all have come to enjoy. Crystal is both a very beautiful lady with very long raven hair and blue eyes but also blessed with a fantastic singing voice that is clear and melodious. Her songs were romantic and blues types and her hits were a success on multiple charts. Below is a link to a television appearance hosted by another great success of that era, Barry Gibb, younger brother of the Gibb brothers that formed The Bee Gees. Please give Crystal Gayle a good listen. You won't be disappointed and you'll want more. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eWrPq5Kvr9d6kNk

Loretta followed the Number One rule of songwriting---"write about what you know". In her case, she knew crushing poverty, the fear of being married as a teenager to an older man who liked sampling the local moonshine, and having babies. So she sang about these things. The problem was that radio stations weren't quite ready for someone like Loretta. Many of her songs, including "Don't Come Home A-Drinkin'", "One's On The Way", "The Pill" and others weren't played on country stations, particularly in the Bible Belt because they were considered controversial. I think the truth is more that these were "women's issues" and radio stations were run by men in those days. They treated her music like a hot potato, but her fans have always admired the courage it took for her to write and record these very personal songs.
