First time I’ve seen somebody go in depth like this into what it’s actually like to own one of these outside of just banging gears fast, love the insight!

HI! I also drive a dog box in my Ford Escort Cosworth. I installed it three years ago and the first time I made a gear change while accelerating I was in disbelief at its speed. My car is not a racing one but a road one. It's not easy to use it like a synchromesh and you always have to know what you're doing, you always have to be focused and that's why it's wonderful! Going slowly, I use a different technique to change up: I press the clutch, move the gear lever to neutral and wait an instant for the primary shaft to slow down, then quickly engage the higher gear; this way three times out of four you don't even hear your teeth chattering. To downshift, always when I'm going slowly, I instead do the classic one-two punch to match the revs: down the clutch, gear lever in neutral, up the clutch, hit the accelerator, down the clutch and engage a lower gear; even so you can downshift without any teeth chattering. When going fast, however, I always use the clutch and engage the gears, both up and down, as quickly as possible: I tried to do the flat gear shift without the clutch but it doesn't feel instinctive and it makes the car make a lot of jolts!😟 At the time everyone told me not to install it because it is a gearbox that is unusable on the road and that those few who had installed it after a few months had removed it out of desperation, but I was too eager to try it and so after a year of evaluations I I got it and have been using it ever since and have never regretted it and will never go back to synchromesh again! If you are a mechanical fanatic, if you don't care about comfort, if you enjoy dominating your car, if you are willing to make some small sacrifices then the dog box is the best gearbox in the world! 😃 It's the only one capable of making you feel like an active part of your car! I am 100% convinced of my choice and I wonder why the manufacturers don't install it directly on very sporty cars, perhaps as an optional extra. Those who speak badly of the dog box are simply because they have never used it and speak from hearsay; 🤫🤐they are not really passionate about mechanics and want everything to be easy, without commitment, without understanding how things work, without making any sacrifices... they are the right customers for electric cars!😉

WTF. You have to be a troll, no one is this clueless. You spent big money so you now are shifting SLOWER and HARDER to shift, you are doing up and down slower DOUBLE CLUTCHING. You say you always use clutch up and down, holy hell, the whole advantage is shifting fast WITHOUT the clutch. You cannot just FLAT SHIFT(if u even know what that is, lol) just because its a dog box....You need to add electronics such as ignition cut and pressure sensor. Please tell me you made up that story, I can't believe your wack story. Re-watch this video 20x, for heavens sake.

Good video keep it up, i got a ppg dog box in my evo kinda scared too street drive it since i want to it last and its not cheap to fix lol maybe ill just send it see how long it does last, maybe make a video on it cause theres not much information on dogboxs / street driving / long jevity kinda, im sure it'll be fine tho since i know how to drive an probably wont beat on it to hard for a while till i get a lil more comfortable with the dogbox. Probably not gonna no lift to shift to save my dogs 😂 maybe some day tho lol just more curious on how long they last im sure if you dont totally beat on it itll fine/last but also have heard they last about half the life of a normal synchronize transmission guess we'll see haha

could you please describe the experience with daily driving a dog box in a evo, because I'm also thinking about having an evo 9 with a dog box, but I don't know if I should daily drive it or no, in terms of costs and reliability
@lolaazour3 ай бұрын
i have a Dog in my evo 9 - i have never driven dog in my life... it is definitely a change to your driving habit. sync boxes make life so much easier and im talking about normal driving and commuting. What alot of people dont talk about dogboxes is the intent of the shifting while driving. This video describes its really well in terms of shifting, how shifting behaviors are at low or high speed. I struggle with downshifting as input shaft speed / RPM matters when matching gears. when you get used to normal driving its actually just as the video describes its really nice to drive / easy to commute minus the race car sounds.

Bit clunky and oldschool compared to current trans swaps. 8hp trans is what everyones swapping to now. Smooth fast and holds power. Can be driven with a clutch too! Jz though dam mint sounds!
@drtone23 күн бұрын
8hp is a phenomenal swap, many advantages as you know, including virtual clutch. Doesn't replace dog box in every application, but is alternative. I have wanted to do 8hp swap, (for RB, SR and 13b, VQ30det, )well before it started gaining momentum. However, I still have not seen clear YT long term proof that they are 100% dialed in, though I have seen very great and well done swaps, only early results.....

@dannylu62304 ай бұрын
You can put dog gear in any transmission regardless awd rwd fwd. 99% of motorcycles uses sequential dog gear mechanism in the transmission. It's cheap, shifts fast, durable. I actually don't know why car manufacturers choose synchro over dog gear
