Abel said this about the album “picture the album being like the listener is dead. And they’re stuck in this purgatory state, which I always imagined would be like being stuck in traffic waiting to reach the light at the end of the tunnel. And while you’re stuck in traffic, they got a radio station playing in the car, with a radio host guiding you to the light and helping you to transition to the other side. So it could feel celebratory, could feel bleak, however you want to make it feel, but that’s what “The Dawn” is for me.”

Abel has always had a story with all his albums and I think these two albums are connected in a way. After hours was like him dealing with his addiction to drugs, sex, addiction and how he had to live with this version of himself. All his past relationships were coming back to haunt him and he was becoming this person like the red suit was pretty symbolic that he never took it off. And then with dawn it’s like he’s gotten older. He’s seen all his past mistakes and how they have affected him in the future. He’s seen the light at the end of the tunnel, aka the dawn.

In the last song of the album “Less than Zero” Abel takes all the synths away and finishes the track singing over an acoustic guitar. That might’ve been the first time in the whole album that we don’t hear a synth or electronic instrument. Maybe it’s a hint at the direction of his next project?

My belief about the cover is that he is showing himself in a state of near death - as if to say that the next album is to be him re-incarnated as a changed young man. Hence the name of the album, "dawn", following the night, "after hours". I think the next album will be more upbeat and vibrant in aesthetics - so he made this album to be what is essentially the middle-point of a transition from night, to day - aka, dark, to light. That's why this album wasn't completely fun or fast, as it tried to capture the feeling of morning, and just waking up. Dawn FM is the album that we had to have in order for the next one to happen.
@Philosophy-colors3 жыл бұрын
What I love the most about Shaun Cee is his ability to instantly pick up the theme and message of a track right after it finishes, e.g. “here we go again”, and then articulating it to us - the audience- which gives greater appreciation for the track (and album as a whole ).

real shit, while there was a massive influx of amazing synthpop revivalists that are lesser known that I'm already satisfied with (magdalena bay, mr kitty, george clanton, post-tnp kkb) i feel that a lot of artists in the mainstream only know about that sound through shit like stranger things and some synthwave acts. you could really tell that Abel fucks with OMiTD and Depeche Mode as he typically does with MJ and Daft Punk in this album.

I actually really liked Wayne’s feature. He doesn’t feel out of place to me at all. His flow is fantastic and I love his lyricism in the verse. It’s not like the listener doesn’t know he’s coming, he’s literally listed on the album, he isn’t a hidden feature. So I don’t see how he’s out of place. For me he seems to be another voice displaying their same displeasure for a lover that has moved on to another man. Like 2 men with the same fucked up story coming together to share their thoughts with each other.

So not too sure if this is right but from my interpretation this album follows right after After Hours, either Until I Bleed Out from standard edition or Final Lullaby from deluxe (both work for this narrative). I feel like Abel (at least the red suited character from After Hours) dies on either of those tracks and ends up in purgatory which is where Dawn FM takes place. Dawn FM is the station that is played for everyone in purgatory. The only way to proceed to heaven is as Jim Carrey says, "You gotta be heaven to see heaven". For Abel's case he has so much pain and regret from his life on Earth that he isn't able to proceed to heaven. My guess is the old Abel is him aging while in purgatory and the music from this album is him stuck in that headspace where he tells the tale of this girl and him from his life on Earth.
@firstlast98463 жыл бұрын
I think you took the titles of both songs too literally - - Until I Bleed Out was about repeating the same mistakes till it kills him (drugs, heartbreak) it’s a cycle that was gonna lead to his downfall, and final lullaby was about putting a relationship to rest.. Dawn is himself growing old and learning from those mistakes and visiting his younger self. His younger self is mortified by what he has become - and kills his older self in defiance of what yet is to come. His older self is mortified by the self destructive life he was living once. But it’s all different takes on it - and that’s mine.

When listening to this album I would advise people to kind of forget about after hours or better yet listen to this album has its own thing without comparing it to after hours. Let this one exist on its own and really listen to it. I think this way you’ll be able to find your favorite tracks and appreciate it more. But I can definitely see off the first listen why people wouldn’t mess with it so much or how it might not hit the way after hours hit the first time we heard it. I definitely feel this album will grow on me the more I listen to it as well as other people.
