The Weeknd returns with a whole new 'sonic universe' for us to dive into, 103.5 DAWN FM. This searing combination of 80s synth pop, disco four-on-the-floor and Abel's signature vocals is just what the world needed right now. I hope you enjoy my first reaction. XOTWOD.

Abel's commentary on this album:...”picture the album being like the listener is dead. And they're stuck in this purgatory state, which I always imagined would be like being stuck in traffic waiting to reach the light at the end of the tunnel. And while you're stuck in traffic, they got a radio station playing in the car, with a radio host guiding you to the light and helping you transition to the other side. So it could feel celebratory, could feel bleak, however, you want to make it feel, but that's what 'The Dawn' is for me."

YES. I actually did it on my sixth listening (i didn't like it at first, cuz I was tired and just didn't feel good), I closed my eyes and imagined that I died, that I see some large open place with dark blue light and there's gap, in this gap there's golden light stsrting to come through (cuz of his album cover, it was actually like it), and there was some old radio in that place, and Jim Carrey's voice introducing to 103.5 Dawn FM is really brilliant.
@dev1ldestiny871
@dev1ldestiny871 2 жыл бұрын
And gap is far far away, I can't reach it, because Jim says: *"You've been in the dark for way too long It's time to walk into the light And accept your fate with open arms Scared? Don't worry We'll be there to hold your hand and guide you through this painless transition But what's the rush? Just relax and enjoy another hour of commercial (Free yourself) music on 103.5 Dawn FM Stay tuned"* And it actually blows your mind, cuz it consistently leading you to that light, there's smooth story going on, while Jim guiding you. And I put it on my S-tier of Weeknd's album tbh, it was great after listening to it from start to end several times.

seriously so brilliant. as an 80s kid i was taken back in time into some dusty old memories, and into all of our futures and the inevitability of death all the the same time. really creates some powerful emotions. the theme of right and wrong and what that means in the context of all of us dying anyway is something that's only natural to ruminate over and he expressed those ruminations more beautifully, disturbingly, effectively than i've ever heard. i never cared that much for 80's music because the technology just wasn't there and it sounds a bit tinny and thin. so i love this revival of the sound now that they can make it sound as full and impactiful as it should have sounded in the first place. i love everything about this album. it's going to go down in history as a great classic.

This is clearly his most cohesive album in terms of the songs blending into each other and creating a storyline. It’s definitely going to grow on most people who have listened once or twice and don’t like it as much as his older stuff. I prefer his older music however I’m not going to gate-keep the trilogy stuff especially when he was making that music as a drug & sex addicted 20 year old. He’s clearly in a better place now and has developed tenfold as an artist. I’m excited to look back at the songs I find “mid” right now in around three months to see how my opinion has hopefully changed for the better. XOTWOD.

One thing that's so clever is that its a clear follow up to After hours. After hours ends with Until I bleed Out, so it seems that Abel's hedonistic self indulgent character has died and has transitioned into the afterlife which is what Dawn is able to encapsulate so well.
@firstlast9846
@firstlast9846 2 жыл бұрын
I disagree - Until I Bleed out wasn’t *Literally* him dying- it meant he’s doomed to repeat the same mistakes of After Hours till it kills him “Until I bleed out” The Dawn was just hinted as being the horizon sunrise that washes away the dark.. it’s just entering a new phase in his life - i don’t think it’s that heavily connected.

I think it’s both. UIBO is a killing of the dark party monster side of Abel as well as a killing of the character and Dawn FM is him waiting in purgatory waiting and listening to 103.5 Dawn FM which results in him thinking back on his life choices. Really smart

After Hours only contained fragments of the 80s aesthetics, there was more of a blend with his older style within that album which fit that dark aesthetic from front to back of falling into a void of drugs, mistakes, etc. With how he rolled out Dawn FM as a sequel and stating this is like being in purgatory (in traffic with this as the radio station playing) on the way to the light. This album goes full 80s with production and pushes the lighter tone, understanding his mistakes and ascending to heaven. Even the order of the track-list with the party vibes out front seems like him being tempted with the dark side. As soon as we get insight from the OG Quincy about how his mother was not in his life, took a toll in his future life with his relationship with women, the album crescendo’s into Abel accepting his fate and wanting to change his ways. This is a work of art and it astounds me of how someone from my city has gotten so big and successful.

This album grows into you. Music is not meant to listen only once. Everytime you listen to this album you're going to like the songs more and more till you cant get enough of it. The album is so different than his past albums BBTM,MDM,Starboy,After hours. It has experimental sounds,themes. From upbeat to slow to poetry of jim everything is here. So i get it when you're surprised on your 1st listenting. BUT DONT JUDGE ONLY BY HEARING ONCE! Thats what i love about him. He doesnt make consistantly same type of songs. With new era comes new sounds. But some assholes still gon' hate. Some said after hours is his worst album when it first came out. Now look where it is 💀 Im already lostenting for 8th time now and man i love those transitions, the story. I feel like imma ascend to hevean.

To me, the album is incredible. To see this man's evolution, sonically and personally, from the kid in Trilogy, to this, just amazing. The soundstage, the narration throughout, the lyrics, the vocals, the instrumentals. Maybe I'm more amazed because some of the lyrics hit a personal note, but still, his voice is beautiful, the instrumentals always take you to a new place, and I find that his every album is a new experience, and for the people who really appreciate the story behind the albums and his journey, this will be a treat. 10/10

I simply cannot believe how The Weeknd is capable of producing such great albums with such great storytelling continuously year after year. Creative exhaustion doesn't seem to be a thing for Abel. Abel took a tremendous step away from his regular sound on this album, and I really, really liked how he achieved it. It's not on the same level as his prior albums yet, but as with other great albums, people will begin to connect with it and discover that it's just as sonically cohesive as After Hours. But as person who enjoy music as a whole, it’s hard not to get lost in the production and vocals and overall cohesiveness of this album. Hip-Hop and R&B will forever be my favorites but seeing Abel explore and seriously nail these 80s vibes makes me enjoy this album so much more. That being said, even though it’s a very upbeat album… for the most part, it’s very dark. I love the story of this album, and Jim Carrey was perfect in every sense of the word. His narration was absolutely beautiful and enchanting, yet it had a dark tone to it and it felt like a warning. “You better enjoy this last hour of your life, you better come to peace with everything that has happened, because you’re about to die and think about it forever and ever.” Out of Time, Gasoline, How Do I Make You Love Me?, Sacrifice, Take My Breath, I Heard You’re Married, Less Than Zero, there are some phenomenal tracks on here even by The Weeknd’s standards. I didn’t care for Tyler’s feature too much, I thought it was a little too short. But I loved Wayne’s feature. He flows on it really nice, I love his lyrics that he spit, and I thought he fit right into the song. On a first listen, it’s not quite there with After Hours. The pacing issues in the middle on a first listen dragged it down for a couple of tracks. But when you get to the last 3 tracks you’re sucked right back into it. On 4-5 more listens, this album will only get better and better and better. I’d give it an 8.5/10. Loved your reaction Jon! The Weeknd comes through once again!
2 жыл бұрын
The intro track seems like it takes place just after the ‘Until I Bleed Out‘ mv, where we can see Abel lay lifelessly in a mirror for a split second and at the end of the video where he seemingly lost his will to live. After his death, he is encouraged by Jim Carrey‘s voice to step out of the dark which could be seen as a description for some sort of existential plane for unresting souls and accept his death as his ultimate fate and wander into the light to begin his final journey. Everything following in this album could be seen in one of two ways: Either Abel revisits his past relationships and mistakes because he holds these moments precious and as we know from his comments all over the album about his nihilistic view, he thinks he is experiencing his last conscious moments ever and these are the memories he cares about the most so he relives them one last time; or, as we hear Jim say 'You gotta be Heaven to see Heaven' at the end of Phantom Regret, he decides to contemplate about his mistakes not for the sake of reliving them for the last time, but rather to accept them as part of who he is and find closure, bringing him inner peace and achieve a heavenly state for his soul. Whether Abel will go on to live forever or if his sceptical view on the concept of afterlife will be his ultimate demise and leave his soul dead for good is up for the listener to decide.

I have a theory about Abel’s career from here on out. Until I Bleed Out is a metaphorical death not only of the character as seen through Dawn FM, but is the death of The Weeknd as a character and transforming from a party monster who loves the fast life to someone who’s settling down and just wants a long lasting relationship Until I Bleed Out is the turning point of The Weeknd. Up until this point he his loved the fast life which he’s been living for so long at this point. He finally realizes that he doesn’t want it anymore and he just wants a long standing relationship with someone that he loves. That’s where the focus of the lyrics of Dawn FM. He’s actually finding someone he’s interested in, but he loses out on her. Then is sent to heaven as Jim Carrey makes apparent in Phantom Regret by Jim The whole album is him in purgatory rethinking his life listening to a radio station 103.5 Dawn FM while waiting to move into the after life. He’s rethinking all of his life choices and his decisions and realizes he screwed up. This I think will lead to a new reformed version of Abel in the future, where he’s chasing real love instead of all the darkness that was in his life beforehand What do y’all think?

As an OG fan, I absolutely hated this album the first time I listened to it. However, I’ve probably listened 10-15 times since it was released and I love it more and more each time. This album is so nostalgic, but also so fresh and innovative. I love that it makes you want to get up and dance, it’s a solid vibe. 👌🏻

This album is on par with After Hours for me. Especially when you listen to "Best Friend", "Is there someone else?" And "starry eyes" back to back. Like WTF! Thats technically one song split to tell a story in 3 parts. Top tier music production, one of the best of the decade. The Michael Jackson influence and his use of Japanese city pop on "Out of Time" with Quincy Jones previously talking about how time quickly passes by and we look back at the past with a sort of regret. GENIUS! Plus the f*cking synths😭.

I think people want the “old” Abel back, from the trilogy era in terms of sound and overall attitude. Guy is over 30 now and he is a completely different person.
