Living with a Blackbear at the off grid Cabin in the Forest and Installing Windows

My Self Reliance

Күн бұрын

What happens when a black bear moves onto the property and refuses to leave? In this video, I confront the blackbear while building the cabin, installing the rest of the roof boards, reinforcing the long wall and installing the windows.
I talk about growing up with with parents who introduced me to the outdoors, and why this cabin the forest is necessary for my happiness.
With me at the cabin is my shotgun and traditional longbow with arrows, and I'm tempted to put them to use to acquire meals and defend myself while working on the log cabin.
The off grid, tiny house is getting closer to completion, ready to move in. If I'm going to have a liveable homestead before winter, I have a lot of work to do and I'm confident that it will be done - winter is coming.

I've only seen bears on TV so I can only imagine what it's like having one mooching around your cabin. The way you're talking makes me think you are thinking of having it removed by some means or other. Is a sonic alarm an option, or a noxious spray device? I'm very interested to see what happens and I look forward to your next episode. It's obviously foremost in your thoughts so be careful and do the right thing.

You are a hero..When I started watching this project I was sick and addicted to drugs..Im 12 days clean and in a program to stay clean...Things are still pretty messed up in my life but day by day life is getting better...My goal is to have a small piece of property and build a cabin like this...You motivated me at my darkest time and your Daily reflections helped me realize Im only 23 and don't know jack shit about life yet...and to be humble because with a good attitude and discipline behavior you can change the course of your life and the people around you. Thank you for the teachings

I'm in hospital recovering from a spinal operation. Fusion of the L4 to L5. Got it falling off a small cliff while hiking. Now I have access to a morphine button but the more videos of yours I watch the less I want to hit that button & get back into the outdoors. Cheers from Australia.

I hope your healing has come along well. I just got my third spinal surgery (second multi-level fusion) behind me a year ago and admittedly I’ve had times when I was in so much pain, I wondered what in the hell I’d allowed my orthopedic surgeon do to me. But everyday gets better and less painful as time goes. I’m a former gymnast, so I will probably have more surgeries but during those days when I’m having a hard time, I may know I’ll never be capable of building my own cabin, but I can get out in the fresh air, and be thankful I’m not in a hospital bed. God bless!

There are obviously plenty of things that separate you from the typical KZbin channels but here are the big ones for me: First, there is no bad language, which makes it easy to share this with my kids in the first place. Most KZbin folks don't seem to understand that, and they lose a lot of viewership I believe. Secondly, you don't endlessly prattle on about liking, sharing, visiting your other social media, etc. That REALLY gets annoying quickly. We know all that stuff and if we want to do it, we will without being constantly told to do it. Thirdly, you are honest, normal, and not political at all. Thank you for all of that, and of course for the valuable bushcraft and outdoors content.

My Self Reliance thank you very much sir, I am in a nursing home now because after my accident my so called wife took everything I owned in our divorce and my family has given up on me so I had to come to a nursing home because I couldn't afford to pay for someone to care for me and I am trying to get someone to take me to a place near our big bridge called the New River Gorge Bridge here in West Virginia where I live but I don't have the money to pay anyone so maybe one day but if you can just please mention my name in one of your videos and I will save it because you are truly a blessing for some of us who can't get back in the woods and truly live, I have been a outdoors man my whole life, I would literally leave after working in the mines on my weekends and go to a place called Braxton County here in West Virginia and build me a lean to and enjoy myself with the wild animals and the fresh air around me my God that was truly living it up per say lol but now I only have my phone to watch your videos and fantasize about being right there with you and helping you build your cabin, thank you for responding to me and God bless you and your family. Amen brother.

Yeah man.....I can relate. My youngest son was nearly grown by the time I recently talked him into going backpacking with me. While I had the chance, I taught him some 'soft core' bushcraft/cooking skills, and he absorbed it all well. Just simple stuff.... Like tinder gathering, feather sticks, batoning, starting a fire in the rain, fast/easy tarp shelters, and such. He kept asking, "how do you know all this stuff"? LOL. I did have to deal with him being annoyed that he'd missed out for so long on the things you and I take for granted, but he was a good sport, and I felt about 10 ft tall for the 4 days. GOOD meals were a HUGE plus, and I think I opened his eyes quite a bit. THEN, on the hike out, he said, "Dad, I fully expected to be miserable, but when we can do this again"? I darn near cried.

+Mrs Garcia....His mother and I divorced when he was 3. She has strong/negative opinions about the 'outdoors/self reliance' mentality. It simply took me that long to convince him to try it once. Now he's 'hooked'. He and I have spent the last few weeks getting him 'outfitted' with his own gear. Also, his feedback to his Mom since returning just MAY convince her to join us someday. She really is a great gal, and I enjoy her company most of the time. (As long as we stay clear of politics and hunting discourses.....LOL). She actually did one HELL of a great job of raising our son. I'm proud of both of them.

Dear God! I have camped all over Australia; with untold varieties of deadly snakes and spiders lurking. I have fumbled may way in the dead of night to answer natures call only to walk smack bang into the forepaws (claws?) of a male Big Red (Australia's largest and most aggressive 'roo). and I've tripped over a 3 meter python while collecting water at night. But nothing, and I mean NOTHING, could be more nerve wracking than camping with that enormous bear in the vicinity! I was on the edge of my seat during this whole video! I was constantly imagining I could see movement and a dark shadow behind you Shawn. No.... give me a red belly black snake (deadly) any day. I always make sure to stomp through the bush, as they feel the vibrations and slither off (that's my hopeful theory anyway). BTW - you have amazing talent with the visual (camera work) aspects of these videos. The scenery; the drone shots and different angles, and your editing skills create an almost unconscious plot. I'm a writer and I am seeing a story developing that perhaps you were unaware would happen when you began your project. And I so love the fact there are lengthy quiet periods as we watch you work. Less words can sometimes say a whole lot more. Haha! - unlike the length of my comment. Sorry.

I also feel that feeling what if he's down fishing and a grizzly rocks up. Haha. I felt that when I was in Banff in 2017. Oh thanks for the videos. I've been watching these video's for a few weeks now and I really like the idea of building a nice simple cabin in the woods. What really struck me the most, this video, was the reflections at the end. I have so many friends who are borderline terrified of the wilderness. I didn't get to do much in the wilderness as a kid because my father passed away young and the women in my family just aren't the outdoor type. It wasn't until I was a teenager and made the right friends that I started going camping and fishing/hunting. Now I am an avid outdoor's person and I find myself fortunate because I haven't had kids yet, but my older sister has. Especially her eldest boy, he and I have always been close and I started taking him camping with me when he was a little guy. Now he's in his 20's and a father, so now we go camping every summer and we have my great niece with us! It feels good because he and I have been so successful at rekindling that tradition and when ever he and I make the final plan for the week long camp out, we always start out with just he and I but by the time we get a couple weeks to leaving, we end up with anywhere from 4 to 10 extra family members trying to jump in on the fun. Its really amazing for me because My nephew and I get to our camp and I can still remember him being a little boy, watching me set camp up. Now it's him and I doing it in tandem and we are so in sync with it. We can have a 10 man camp fully setup and ready to go, from barren ground to functional camp site, fire pit, tents, eating area, wood splitting area, washing area and day cover all in less than an hour. Clean up literally takes the same amount of time and you would never know people had been there. Seeing his growth and watching now as he shows his baby girl the same tricks and instilling the same outdoor etiquette really hit hard and hits home. I wish my old man could have been around to witness that evolution because I truly believe he would have been so happy to see that and be apart of that.

What you’re doing is fantastic! I live in the UK but spent 4 years as a child living on an airforce base out in the majave desert. I used to spend most of my time walking out in the desert exploring nature. That was 40 years ago and have been living my life back here in the Uk ever since. Living the expected lifestyle. School, work etc. I moved to the north of England 9 years ago and it has some beautiful country side. Places like the Lake District. Whenever I can, I like to take my granddaughter for walks in these areas of natural beauty. Sadly nothing lasts forever. She will probably outgrow our walks, the places we go could end up being developed for whatever reason? But they are moments I will always treasure. Some people just don’t realise what is gradually being destroyed around us. Living life through an lcd screen or a nature documentary. Sorry for the waffling but I have a dog beside me begging me for a walk, how ironic :)

Get realistic. Number one, I am not an Internationalist. Number two, Unless you are a native the land isn't yours. Number three, Since when were Australians considered some scoundrels to be hated. Number four, The queen is YOUR overlord! (once again, unless you are a native. If you are I feel you have every right to throw all peoples out of Canada that do not share native blood).

Hi Shawn. My Dad was an outdoor man and would have loved being a forest ranger. They owned a for eastern European standard fairly large farm with a deep forest and river running through it. I had an older sister but only he and I were incredibly close. He would take me [just he and myself] into the forest and explained the wildlife to me. WWII took my grandparents farm and also my father away. He died in 1945 in a POW camp in Siberia when only 41 years of age. I was 9 when I saw him last. But his love for nature is installed in me forever. Love your videos. There is so much calmness about you that is quite unique. Keep on keeping on and thanks so much.

I have been watching a lot of your videos lately. I found out about you through Joe R's videos. I have really enjoyed your self reflections. I have been battling stage 4 breast cancer for 3 years, since I was 34. I started watching these outdoor videos making plans for this past summer. I never know how I will feel more than 3 months down the road. Anyway as it turned out I had to go back on chemo for the Summer. Chemo kicked my butt this time and I just found out it did nothing helpful. I ended up spending the last few days in the hospital due to a collapsed lung. Point is while I was there you posted your video about just getting going in the right direction. Just do something, because the worse thing we can do is give in to the same old actions or lack of actions. I realized I had done that. I really threw in the towel this last chemo and let loved ones take care of me and haven't pushed myself. I don't know if I will ever go camping again but your reflections have at least motivated me to get back to the things I can do before I lose those things too. Also my appetite has sucked for months but funny enough every time I watch you at the fire grilling or Joe and his steaks I get really hungry and end up eating. So thanks for that. I am glad you live life knowing everything ends and we do not always get second chances. More people need to know that and to know tomorrow is only a hope or a dream but never a promise.

I've heard that chemo doest really help much. U can get secondary cancers because of it. It speeds up d growth of that cancer. Also it reduces ur life span. Try paradise tree leaves (lakshmi taru) and soursop fruit and gerson diet. Research it all.

I sat down this morning with my coffee and discovered this video. It was so ‘captivating’, I couldn’t turn it off. I love stuff like this. I’m a 49 year old male from Australia, I work as a video editor so I’m always sitting inside. We have nothing like this down under. It may sound weird but you do get fed up of so much sunshining days and living near the beach. I’d give my left arm to experience what you have. I’ve always dreamed of building a cabin in the wilderness but don’t know the first thing about it. Plus you’re literally half a world away. Love your video, I will be subscribing. Thanks!

Yikes so we keep our distance and don't interact, that's our relationship, I've come close to bumping into them and seems edicate is to look away and walk away, or that's the agreement we have, they're smart and curious and it's good if they aren't afraid, when you bump into each other, it's not a panic situation, so it seems. Anyway, I already have a library that includes Carla Emery’s book and a bunch of the Storey books, do you think I should still order the foxfire books when the book shelves have been installed in the new cabin? PS if you are a fan of Carla Emery’s book, one of her daughters has a homesteading VLOG here on KZbin.

The fox fire series was originally published in 1972 via the University of North Carolina. A major contributor was Mike Underhill. There's a reconstruction village at the entry to the blue ridge parkway. Anyway, it an interesting read. 10 volumes originally and I believe 11 now. They went up into the smokey mounta8ns and documented the old ways. the verbage is odd as it was written phentically. Great info there. Everything from cabins and shakes to hog head cheese. about a 120.00 USD investment. Well worth it.

Young or old bear, a blast of chunky rock salt into their hide will make them want to stay away from your area. A bear that is not afraid of you is not a safe thing for you and your family. But salt into their bum is going to burn for a bit and what is nice is that the salt will keep them from infection so they heal up ok. But it is a reminder that being around humans can be a pain in the rump and they will want to avoid that.
