Another full year in the wilderness living my dream. There is no place I would rather be than in the wilderness, self reliant, thriving in an off grid log cabin and living close to nature. Spring arrived today, and in my mind, it's the beginning of a new year and I reflect on the last 365 days spent building my homestead and creating a safe place for my family and me for times like this. The next 365 days will bring big changes for me and my family as we continue to learn how to and practice becoming more self reliant and put the lessons I have learned over the last three years to use. This year, food security and health are our focus, along with a few building projects that I'll be undertaking alone to make our homestead more self sufficient. Stay healthy and be kind.

Do something to keep occupied...look for open university courses, for example. Watch videos and learn something you’ve always been curious about. I read a post somewhere from a person living in an apartment building....the residents are cooking large meals and having group meals, getting acquainted. They posted in the lobby area things that they have extra of, and things that are needed. Someone bought a 40lb bag of rice and offered to share. Offer to fix things for neighbors, lead a group to start window gardens using empty jars and cans...sweet potatoes are great for that! Start a compost bin for foods. And connect to your friends and family via Skype or something if you can’t get together.

It's the sort of relaxation that comes of hard daily work and a huge ability to self motivate. His muscles, his sinews, his sweat equity, his mind, and his character willed that homestead into existence. It's like a chronological archive, a 3-D calendar: every nail, every shingle, every object placed, represent exact moments in the man's life. All we have is time, they say, and he has devoted several years of his time on earth to a monument of free will: to one's limited existence in space and time. Lofty stuff, but I guess that'll relax a person.

I love this comment. People like us living in the western world enjoy quite a few advantages but I think we have taken the so-called conveniences too far concerning all the stressful things we do every day. Just driving a car, even if you do it at slow pace, increases your adrenalin level and other cortisol stuff. Staying up half the night using the computer is nice but its blue light interfers with our sleeping patters. I could give you many more examples. No wonder we watch these videos knowing somehow that less can indeed be more. Love from Germany, also struck by covit 19.

Hi again SHAWN ...And quite a year it was! So much of your vision accomplished along with fires food fun and family too. What a surprise to find a movie replacing a vid! No doubt this is also one of your finest creations. How lovely this has been remembering so much of your year but also how you captured the seasons of life with the beautiful drone shots. The glorious scenery in your world is breathtaking to include my favorite single orange fall tree and the many crystal clear water features. The music compliments the calm quiet magic of it all. Peace and harmony to cherish! Thank you so much Shawn for making this very special gift for all to see. And of course for sharing Cali living her best forever life... These sites and sounds have warmed my heart tonight as I remember some of the same from days gone by... Thank you more then I can say...

I don't live that far back but am surrounded by mountains, have a creek with an awesome waterfalls wildlife is deer, turkeys, eagles and our resident hawk Moose haven't been around going on 10 years now. We are retired grow our fruit, veggies and meat ( yes I do, the butchering my dad taught me which I love to do , morbid maybe 😜). So this self- distancing isn't a big deal just go nature walking or sit by the falls, (yes it never freezes.) with the resident hawk who follows. Can't wait to Ser what's next on your list. @@jeremycbarnhart2305 prepare to be consistently flabbergasted I guess. I come from poor rural Virginia. I've lived in both Carolinas & West Virginia as well, you'd be surprised what people can do with limited knowledge/tool-sets.. & even crafting our own tools. And these skills are not inherent to the rich, but rather quite the opposite.. Your idea is entirely backwards. Far less rich men who have never had to fight to obtain a basic human necessity understand the ins and outs of wilderness self-sufficiency, and the reasons are obvious. Because they could just pay for it in the city instead. But real poor people? They had to learn how to do this just to survive my guy. Passing down the techniques & information from generation to generation & helping each other in tiny towns with one local market. All of this seems obvious to me, Im not sure why it seems the other way around for you.

Its never too late for that, but you might wanna also carefull asses the skills, the area and th level you want to go "in to the wild" Shawn here is doing quite advanced style, although its not completely off grid. Many people would be happy with just having a house 1000 yards from the closest neighbor, some go totally off grid, growing food, animals, no electrictiy or modern tools... so theres levels to how to do it.
@ToniaFlorine4 жыл бұрын
King Théoden I agree. It will be in Wisconsin as my husband (engineer for a company here also has a plant in WI) has an opportunity to transfer there. We can get a small home on acreage for a fraction of what we are paying for our home here on 1 acre in the woods here in northern mountains of California. We are 48 and 50 and we want a more self sufficient way of life now that we no longer have kids in the home. We used to live in Oregon until 5 years ago and we just don’t want to spend the rest of our lives on the west coast. A new chapter that we’ve dreamt about for all our 30 yrs of marriage 😉
@JamesJohnson-yh1oh4 жыл бұрын
@@ToniaFlorine My husband and I've been married 40 years, now 63 years old. Love being empty-nesters! We live off-grid 10 minutes from Redding, on top of a mountain near Shasta Lake city and Shasta Dam; so close and yet so far from civilization, growing some of our own food. We're also going to be looking into another place to live; and not in far northern California. Not even in California at all. Oregon or Idaho; definitely much more remote. We want to be more self-reliant. We're not house-bound, and will not live in fear.
@ToniaFlorine4 жыл бұрын
James Johnson I agree with you while heartedly.. wow you are very close to us! We’ve been empty nesters since 2009... You guys sound so similar to us. Central Oregon will always be our heart. If we don’t move to Wisconsin as we hope.. then at the very least we plan to get back home to Oregon.. possibly Eastern Oregon if we do. Up here on the mountain it’s a little more challenging to grow as much as we would like.. but it’s doable. So nice to know we aren’t the only ones with this mindset. The sooner we all can get out of this State the better! We’ve lived here for almost 6 years now and that’s 6 years too long. I grew up in S Ca and said I’d never come back until my husband career forced us to 😮 But I know God brought us here for a reason and just praying He’ll get us out sooner rather than later. Good luck to you both! And God speed on seeing your dream come to fruition!

No need, really, to fear the animals. Bears, wolves, coyotes, etc, despite the stories, don't generally mess with humans. Plus, he has the tools he needs to deal with them if they do get aggressive with him. Add to that the higher point in his cabin, he has safety. You need to be aware of what animals are capable of, but also understand they are just living too.

It’s amazing that we as human beings forget how the beginning of civilization was created. As man finds quicker ways of technology, we tend to forget how we get here in the first place. This was amazing. I've struggled with addiction since my early teen years and now at 30 years old, here I am suffering through withdrawal for the literal millionth time yet it never gets any easier. As a young boy my dad was a big outdoorsman and loved taking me and my brother into nature. That's always stuck with me and something like this would be an absolute dream come true yet for years and years I've always been bound to where I am by one thing and that's drugs. Particularly street fentanyl. I've had several very serious close calls with overdose and too many minor ones to count, yet I still can't get away from it. I'd love nothing more than to wake up in a warm and cozy log cabin with a fire going each day, not having to plan my day around making sure I have enough dope each and every day. I haven't taken an actual trip for vacation in many years as I never leave my general area. Watching this video has brought some real peace and comfort to the ridiculous hell I'm experiencing by my own hand and I want to say it was damn beautiful to watch each and every second of it. I felt like I was there with you every step of the way. You remind me so much of my dad, a hardworking man who never asked for a handout or help, always figured things out on his own. I subscribed very quickly
@Gigi-5 Жыл бұрын
I came across your comment by chance and I want you to know that I’m going to earnestly pray that the chains of your addiction be broken, so you can have a life that you can enjoy instead of one that controls you and bounds you from enjoying the simple things in life. You deserve to be free and I know the one that can help you overcome. Hang in there, it will get better.
@kickinwinghotboi883 Жыл бұрын
@Gigi-py6he I sincerely thank you for the kind words and the prayers. Growing up, I was always "against" God and faith in general, but I have several friends and family members who have beaten their addictions through faith and prayer, so that has to mean something. The older I get, the more I begin to believe that maybe my life got so off track was because of my lack of religion and contact with Jesus and God. I've been trying to pray each night, I'm not so good at it and I do sometimes find myself losing hope at times but I push those thoughts to the back of my mind and continue to talk with God. I hope many great things come your way. These days, it's getting harder and harder to find genuinely nice people out there, but you are certainly an exception. Have a blessed day and thank you again

I have been on life support , my family didnt know if i was coming home because i was a dumb ass, but i did get a second chsnce , i do get to see my to amzing beautiful boys grow into men , and i was selffish and depressed and did not even think about those two, during that incident , until right before i got into. An ambulance and thats all i remember a week later i came out of coma , and im telling you, my life has changed i am no longer the selfish ass iused to be , ive always had a huge heart and tried to love everyone , now I DO!!!!! I cannot stand hatefulness , any negativity whatsoever , i am blessed to have the chance to hear the birds see my kids walk , ect i wish and pray for you the best of luck and maybe one day,i could hear from you and you say heythis person saved my life , i could only be so greatful to know i helped someone that much , but to know i at least i poured mysould and experiences out to you , that itried , youare loved !!!!!!!!!!!
