It is beautiful, but it becomes a whole lot less enjoyable in person when the black flies, deer flies, horse flies and mosquitoes hit. They each peak at different times, but some of the worst of their cycles overlap. For those of us experiencing it all vicariously via video, late spring and summer may seem the most beautiful -- but the reality when you are there in person is different. Simply put: the bugs are awful - just *awful*. That's why Shawn prefers the late Fall, Winter (and early Spring). For 6 to 7 months, the bugs finally stop. The other 5? Not my cuppa.

When I was much younger, I watched a 1969 movie called "My Side Of The Mountain". It was about a boy around 15, year old who went up in the Mountain to live on his own for a while. I never forgot that movie. I was 14 at the time and made a list of all the stuff I would need to do it. Now I regret that I never did anything like it. It may be why I like watching those of you who build what they need to live off the grid with nature. May the wind always be at your back and the sun upon your face. Stay safe.

I have stopped watching several channels on off grid because when they start to act like yahoos and break or destroy everything they touch, well, that's not for me. You enjoy the solitude and only the sounds of the wildlife and all that goes with it. I suppose one can take the silence as how ever they want to but, that's the way I saw it. I do enjoy your input from time to time but, I already know what your going to do B-4 you do it. Hello Shawn . For some time I have been thinking that cutting peat to burn in the cabin would be a good idea for You . 2 days work could supply You a full winter of peat for heating and cooking .It burns with an even heat very slowly and is not dirty like coal .You would not need to work so hard at chopping fire wood . I saw a vid of how the Irish farmers do it . They use a tractor like Yours and put a plow on the back that cuts the peat into blocks . Then they collect the peat on a wagon snd take it to the barn and put it on drying racks . By winter it is dry enough to burn in a stove . Watching a vid on this would teach You how to bulld a plow . Watching You cut wood all the time when I know there a a better way concerns me .. However I realize that the problem is that it creates a huge hole in the ground as time passes , The Irish dont have a lot of trees to harvest thats why they turned to peat . You have options but as You get older cutting wood becomes less desirable . Ok bye for now . Mike

Love the "oh, I need a ladder; let’s build one". And as always: great camera work! Thank you, Shawn.

Thank you. I found your channels last fall and have watched nearly every video you have posted. I love what you do, the hard work, the nature, and Cali! Thank you.

Shawn, if you were to ever write a complete guide to self reliance book in the future, I will not hesitate to buy it

Just to say I would never have thought I could be so fascinated watching someone build a thunder box.

Shawn, you have a beautiful place in the wilderness with all that great water but for a 76 year old, it's not ideal for a weak bladder. Well I like your priorities. I'm enjoying this. I pray that you stay safe each day.

Hey Shawn - The quiet, only with the sound of your efforts, are a great comfort. A wise lady told me as a child, "The greatest works are done in Silence". I've lived to prove it is true.
