This came out about 53 years or so ago when I was in my 20s. It was a huge hit. Give EVERY PICTURE TELLS A STORY a listen or REASON TO BELIEVE. Both are great songs. Thank you for all the hard work and great music and commentary you bring with every video. You are one of the very best.

Ah, Rod Stewart. Because of him, so many of us male children of the 70s went through our junior high years hoping to meet our own Maggie May, an older gal to take us in and teach us. 😇 I really like much of Rod Stewarts early music. When this was released as a "single" this was the A side, the B side was a song called Reason To Believe, which is my personal favorite song by Mr. Stewart.

One of my favorite memories of growing up in the '70s was K-Tel's compilation albums that you could buy at the neighborhood record shop: "20 Hits for One Low Price!" You got The Beatles, Melanie, Donny Osmond, The Turtles, Donovan, and Rod Stewart's "Maggie May" all on one record! I can't think of a better music education for an 8-year-old than that. ⏺

You need to hear Rod rocking out. I recommend "(I Know) I'm Losing You", which is an old Motown song but one that Rod (with the help of his buddies in the band Faces that he was in at that same time), really rocks on. I think you'll like it, and Faces was a top-notch band. On "Maggie May", one of the guys in Faces played most of the instruments...bass, multiple guitars, the intro...the guy is Ron Wood. He has spent about the last 50 years as a guitarist with the Rolling Stones. Very talented musician. Rock on!

Even though you weren't "listening" to it, your friend's Dad exposed you to great music. That's the important thing. We don't listen when we're young, but as we become adults the music we "heard" is still there in our heads and allows us to appreciate and be open to music because of the associations that are there. Your friend's Dad may be why you seem to understand the music you're hearing now, even more than other reactors. It's a gift that keeps on giving. I'm still understanding and appreciating the composition of the songs I heard as a kid in the early 70s, just as I now enjoy the Opera music I was exposed to while watching Bugs Bunny cartoons, and that just adds more color to the sepia toned images of my youth.

Though this song has been massively over-played on the radio--both when it first came out, as well as on current classic rock stations--I can honestly say that it's the one over-played song that I NEVER get tired of. Rod's pained, authentic, raspy vocals, his rather poetic, though sad, lyrics ("the morning sun when it's in your face really shows your age"), and that frickin' wonderful mandolin, lol, deservedly give this tune it's claim to fame as one of the greatest rock songs ever. Some of Rod's early musical influences come from English/Scottish folk music, and you can hear it in the addition of the mandolin, and in the beautiful, Medieval/madrigal opening sequence, which usually isn't played on the radio. Please keep doin' what you're doin'. It's great to watch your musical journey as you uncover these wonderful songs. You said you lament the fact that you didn't notice or appreciate a lot of this music when you were younger, but you've been given a second chance, and you're taking full advantage of it and doing great. Sometimes timing really is everything. :)

Autumn 1971 I was just starting my last year at school. Many happy memories, and this being no. 1 in the charts is one of them. It's a happy devil may care song. Love the strings on it, particularly the mandolin at the end. That was played by Ray Jackson of the band Lindisfarne. He more or less improvised it when asked. The mandolin was one of the sounds Lindisfarne used quite a bit.. You could do worse than check them out. First big hit was Meet me on the corner, another was Lady Eleanor. Think that one made no 1 too. It got pretty high in the charts. Great song. Love it !

"My song" in high school; love the mandolin. Way back, Rod was singing on Jeff Beck's "Truth" album; also with the Faces on their album "First Step." Nobody ever does reactions to those. His older stuff is far better, imo. I saw him live in 1970 or '71 in S.F. with the Faces.
