It's interesting that the mice seem to realize that the part of the disc near the ramp isn't supported. Nearly all of them immediately go to the pivot point to get on. It would be interesting to add a fake support and see if the mice would step on there.

I made my own using a 5 gallon bucket, drilled holes in opposite sites of the top and ran a piece of wire through one hole, through a 16 oz water bottle and then through the opposite hole. When the mice jump from the ramp onto the bottle it rolls and dumps him in the water. In the winter I have to use antifreeze instead of water because there is no heat in the shed.

I had a huge mouse problem a few years ago. I put a bucket in the hallway, half full of water with sunflower seeds floating on the water. For about five nights I would find several drowned mice. I can't remember for sure how many, but it seems like it was as many as 14 one night. This worked great for about five nights, then it didn't work any more. Did they figure it out and then warn their buddies. I still had mice, but the mouse trap didn't work any more. Maybe mice are smarter than we think.

Brilliant! How excited are you! I've been trying to catch a rat in my back garden for about 3 weeks now! I've got a trap down with bait and a trail cam, tonight I've hidden the trap under grass clippings to disguise it! Fingers crossed! 🤞

I do well indoors with a Victor plastic spring rat trap, and I press peanut butter down into the bait well until it is only flush with the top. You can leave them out baited without the trap set to condition them to coming for the food, but I get them right away without that. I also just discard a trap with the rat. I don't reuse them. I wonder if this swinging trap made for a larger bucket or small barrel, with water, would work for you. I wonder if polishing the aluminum disc or inside of the barrel with spray shortening would help. good luck!

has the rat tripped the trap before and not gotten caught? Consider changing the type of bait perhaps. Smell might be a better disguise than sight.

For mouse, rat, and squirrel bait, a mixture of peanut butter, raisins, and oats (plain, not flavored) works really well. Don't be surprised if you attract skunks, raccoons and bobcats too.

Babies have a short digestion as well. I heard it was 30% waste, but it depends if you are talking by weight or by volume. Also do you count moisture? We do wee some of that waste out so it may be more like what you say.

I had a bunch of mice in met garage getting into the dog food. After catching a couple the others were fighting to eat the dead mice instead. I'm not sure there is a humane way to live trap a mouse. they either eat each other or you move them and something else eats them.

These types of traps need to have a break-away function so it feels stable initially, then all of a sudden, drops. This is especially true for rats which are much more cautious. My walk-the-plank trap has a small magnet that holds it until they get out to the end.
