Yes, there was a great opportunity for this mousetrap to go from merely good to really awesome by trapping a large rat. Instead the rat went in, and it looked like it stole some of the bait and just strolled out cool as anything. 😒

This mouse trap has a design that really appeals to me in all ways. Old, live catch, and effective. Thanks for building it for us. Your pet mouse testing is genius, because of the way you make the actors known to us and just maybe how they live the good life, but still have to work.

I enjoy watching your videos Shawn! As I was watching this one, I got to thinking about all of your other primitive traps. I think it would be interesting if you had a lot or all of your primitive traps set up at one time in various places in your barn and maybe even just on the outside of your barn. It would be interesting to see if you caught a lot of mice and rats.

Thank you so much for creating a live trap playlist! Kill traps make me sad, but I can laugh watching your live traps in action knowing the mice will be released later. I love how you keep some of the mice you catch and they seem to be treated very well, that's nice to see!

Clever how the Spanish Windlass powers the trap AND locks it shut. I’m interested in how trap designers use the power sources from the weaponry of the day. We see twisted rope, bent trees and gravity all being used. I’m always surprised that we don’t see the power of the bow being put to use though.

Can you do an all star barn night where you setup 5-10 of your traps at once in barn and see how many mice you can catch in one night. Will one sprung trap with a catch in it make the mice wary or will the other traps have a chance. We need Trapalooza 2018 at least one time.

I was wondering if a live capture trap would have been preferred over a quick kill one in this time period (and many others too) if the mice and rats were intended for consumption as well as rodent control? Or were they just being humanitarians? For instance, I could see this being a method favored by Franciscan monks who would fit into such a category.

It seems to me that some ancient traps, the most elaborated once, were also form of entertainment. Why else would someone invest in such a design, with expensive materials such as wire bars, when there are much easier to build kill traps? It must have something to do with long winter nights at home with no entertainment.

Mice poop about... 75 pellets a day? I think the number is between 50 and 75, at least. Which works out to once every 20 minutes, though that's not how it works because they a) sleep most of the day and b) poop a lot at once. But yeah, they poop a lot. Spot cleaning my mouse's cage takes a good bit of time because of it.

Perhaps where the windlass lever presses against the door, a shallow groove could be carved into the wood so the windlass lever doesn't run the risk of sliding around the side of the stop bar. Hard to describe in text, so I hope I explained well enough.
