Facts! It was appointment tv! You were on time for a premier of his because it was all anyone would be talking about for days. Radio. Tv. Magazines. Work. School. Gym. Corner store. He was bigger than anyone and never EVER failed to deliver. Even if not a fan of his music, people watched to see the video because they were usually groundbreaking and always miles apart from what other artists were doing. He made films with his music with big Hollywood directors and A list artist. Michael was him.

Yep! I was eleven years old and this premiered on MTV, FOX, BET, and VH1 simultaneously! I remember my little sister and I were eating canned peaches and they had a whole hour long behind the scenes on the making of the video (directed by the late John Singleton, who also directed “Boyz N The Hood” and “Shaft” (2000)), and a huge buildup to the video’s world premiere. Man, back then music video premieres were a legit big deal! ;)

TLC actually did the dance first in the What About Your Friends video, Michael Jackson was a huge fan of TLC after they performed for him in 1992. As well as Prince, which is a major compliment considering the group was heavy influenced by both of them. You can see them coming up with the dance moves in their biopic/movie "Crazy Sexy Cool, The TLC Story"
