Another fact: Stephen King sold the rights to Frank Darabont for $5,000 and never cashed the check. Instead he sent it back to Frank Darabont and said, "In case you ever need bail money. Love, Steve."

I don’t know about the book but in the film the redemption wasn’t Andy’s but Red’s. Andy wasn’t guilty and never truly lost hope, however Red was admittedly both guilty and had lost hope. He therefore needed to be redeemed, which is why his last words and the those of the entire film are “I hope” as well as the Andy story with relationship to Red borrowing heavily on the Christ story.
@Tim_the_Enchanter Жыл бұрын
This is why I much prefer the original ending, where we don't know if Red manages to get across the border and find Andy. The point is that he had enough spirit left to try.

You didn't mention one of the biggest differences, namely, the ending. In the movie, we see Red and Andy reunite in Mexico, while in the novella it's left open whether he makes it across the border. Also, minor nitpick, but Red is the main character, not Andy. He's the main perspective for the audience, and he's also the one that grows and changes through the course of the story.
@HeartBreakKid5517 жыл бұрын
I remember hearing that the original ending for the movie was supposed to be open ended if Red and Andy reunite or not but I think it didn't go over well with test audiences or the studio executives had a hand in it (you know how movie productions go) so they ended up adding the last scene of them on the beach. Personally I like open ended movies because you can pretty much create your own ending the way you feel fits the movie whether you want a happy ending or a sad ending its up to the viewer.
@Jurgan67 жыл бұрын
HeartBreakKid551 I also think this story works better open ended because it's about hope. We the audience have to hope Red makes it without knowing if he does.
@P-diddykong7 жыл бұрын
Jurgan6 the books main theme is hope. While hope is only mentioned in the movie, and takes a backseat to the theme of freedom, as you can see in the last shot with the big wide ocean representing freedom. So in the movie it makes sense for to show how Red got his freedom while in the book it makes sense for him to learn how to hope in the end
@ranica477 жыл бұрын
What they also left out which I'm amazed didn't get mentioned here is that Andy had to share his cell with a Native American for, I think, two years as punishment for something or other. When Red asked the cellmate what Andy was like he said "nice guy, quiet, but a very cold cell." We know now that it was cold cos Andy had broken through by then but what Red realised after Andy's escape was that for two years Andy wasn't able to dig any more of his escape tunnel through the wall due to the cellmate being there. That two years must've been torture for him!
@christopherkotsopoulos7017 жыл бұрын
Some other differences - it's not until mid-afternoon that they realize Andy has escaped Shawshank completely in the book. The warden also sends one of the guards through the hole he dug to see where he went and Red is sent to the hole for not being able to control his laughter when he hears the guard reacting to the the foulness of the shit pipe.

The Shawshank Redemption is my favourite movie of all time…
@olliemad7 жыл бұрын
The book also states what crimes the inmates did which I found to give them a totally different perspective as in the film you kinda forget that these men are in for life for bad crimes. Brooks for example was a hard con man who murdered his wife and daughter, whereas Red put a large insurance policy on his wife and cut the brakes on her car, but she picked up her neighbour and her son, his actions killed all 3.
@jenniferschillig37686 жыл бұрын
When I first saw this in the theatre, I was the only one in the group of friends who'd read the book. So I knew the basic plot, but the changes and embellishments they gave it were a (nice) surprise. One thing I find interesting is a scene I loved in the book (and apparently, so did many other readers) but was deleted. Frank Darabont explains why in his notes to the published script. After the tunnel is discovered, Norton gets a skinny young guard to go down the hole. Said guard makes it down the shaft, and calls back up, "Smells like shit...oh, shit, it IS shit!!!" and pukes his guts up. Red just falls over laughing and Norton claps him in solitary--which doesn't bother Red at all because he spends the whole two weeks laughing over it all! Darabont figured that this fan-fave scene should be in the movie. It was scripted and filmed (but isn't on the DVD special features)...and fell absolutely flat with test audiences. Darabont couldn't figure out why--and then he realized that after the shocking reveal of the tunnel, we needed to know HOW Andy did it...we didn't need to delay it for three minutes to spend it on a character we'd never seen before. Hence, the much more effective jump-cut from the hole in the wall to the police cars zooming towards Shawshank. Textbook example of something that works on the page, but not onscreen.

HERE'S AN INTERESTING "WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE" TO DO: If you haven't heard, they're planning a remake of SCARFACE. The 1983 Al Pacino Drug Lord movie is itself a remake of the 1932 Paul Muni Gangster film which in turn was based upon the novel by Armitage Trail... which in turn was inspired by the life and crimes of Al Capone. It would be interesting to talk about the differences between the book and BOTH films and their parallel to the real life story of Capone.

There is one thing in the book that is easy to miss that absolutely changes the entire tone of Andy's character. Both book and movie depicts Andy as an innocent man caught in a dark corrupt system. However, in the story "apt pupil" it is reviled that Andy laundered money for the nazi protagonist Dussander. Which makes sense when you think of a major plot point is Andy laundering money for the warden. "Boom a bonus thing you didn't know"

If you ask me, you left of probably the most important difference between the movie and the book. Towards the end of the movie (after Tommy is killed and Andy finally gets out of solitary), Andy seems like a beaten man, someone that may have lost the hope he claimed couldn't be taken away. And by taking his frame of mind into account, when Haywood says that he "came by the shop askin' for a length of rope", you sit there with Red during that stormy evening thinking the worst. And then Andy doesn't come out of his cell at role call, you feel the hope has left the movie, only to be lifted up during Red's re-telling of Andy's escape and the downfall of Norton and Hadley. If I remember correctly, in the book Red just mentions that Andy escaped from Shawshank, no lead up, no playing with your emotions or twisting your expectations. Just states the fact that Andy escaped. THAT is the biggest difference between the movie and the book, and you kinda left it out. Way to go.....

I always wanted them to do a spinoff/sequel to the movie set 25 years after Andy's escape (25 years after the original film) have the movie take place in the early 90s and have them show what Red and Andy had been up to since the prison. Maybe the film can be centered around someone in Mexico finding out who Red and Andy really are and that can be the conflict of the film to make sure that their real identities never get out.

Funny thing is, by having Norton and Hadley there before and after Andy's 19 years in Shawshank, it actually created a cruel irony that the movie failed to recognize. Andy was an inmate so naturally he could never leave Shawshank but Norton and Hadley were free men and could have moved on to better prospects but for over 20 years they stayed locked in the same positions. Norton appeared to be an ambitious man who perhaps had a bright eye for politics, but you never see him running for any public office or get a promotion to a more cushy post within the department of corrections. Hadley was already captain of the Guards and his only real superior was Norton who naturally never disapproved of his methods, so what stopped Hadley from being offered a post somewhere more to his liking? Why didn't he become a Warden of his own prison? Both men's lives were stuck in a perpetual rut, spending day after day, year after year in the same place doing the same thing over and over, like the very inmates they held. The cruel irony of it all was that they were just as much a prisoner as Andy only worse because they could leave anytime but never do.

I always wondered where Stephen King got his source material for the book, how he knew what prison was like in 1940's and 50's. And then I read the nonfiction Escape from Alcatraz written in 1962. It's as if Stephen King is simply retelling that escape story. Frank Darabont followed King, echoing the Clint Eastwood movie that was loosely based on the book. If you want to know more about what makes Shawshank tick, read Escape from Alcatraz and watch the movie too.

I like the book more only because the book hints at the possibility Andy may have actually killed his wife. Or at least paid to have her killed

Fun fact for Spongebob Squarepants fans: Clancy Brown, who played Captain Byron Hadley in this movie, is the voice of Mr. Krabs in Spongebob.

The Brooks sub plot was needed and added to the movie l guess not everyone agrees but that's cool. The idea of institutional routine.

Could you please do a "what's the difference" on another Stephen King novel The Running Man and how it differs from the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie by the same name? Plus the end of the book is just crazy
@magpieram7 жыл бұрын
That one pisses me off. I saw the movie and thought it was OK. Years later, I read the book, and I still rate it as King's best work. Such a great novel, fantastic ending, but that ending can't be done now in a new movie. I've read the book a few times, trying to think of a way for them to end the story in any other way, but can't. It pisses me off they wasted such a great story on a lame Schwarzenegger vehicle.
@darkngyth7 жыл бұрын
The end of that book definitely isn't socially acceptable now, but still a very good read. I haven't read a lot of Stephen King's stuff but, out of what I have read I do put the Running Man right up there as some of his better work. It's one of my favorites
@Cyprienroche7 жыл бұрын
That would be tough, since it's King's adaptation that differs the most from the source material. It's like 2 completely different stories... (the one that the movie is telling is a complete disaster though, worst SK adaptation for sure) They could do Kubrick's "The Shining" or David Cronenberg's "Dead Zone"

In the book, Warden Norton's placard reads "His judgement cometh and that right early", in the movie it reads "His judgement cometh and that right soon".

The one thing that always bothered me about this movie is how the tunnel to escape is in a wall rather than the floor. In the scene where they search Andy's cell there is a window on one of the other walls... his cell is not underground, so what is he tunneling through? Love the movie, just a pet peeve I cant seem to shake haha

Many differences in The Wizard of Oz and the book (as well as speculation about it having hidden meanings to do with the Populist movement related to gold and silver). Another would be Gone With the Wind. I don't know if The Sound of Music was a book (perhaps Maria Von Trapp wrote her story into a book, not sure?), but the differences between what really happened and what is in the movie are fairly big.

Also note that the original filmed ending had Red riding off on a bus looking for Andy and not knowing if he would ever find him. Fade to black. Glad they re-shot a better ending with a reunion. Focus groups can sometimes help I guess.

Hey Cinefix! I wanna suggest doing a What's the Difference video on John Carpenter's 1982 remake of "The Thing" (or 1951's "The Thing From Another World") and John W. Campbell's novella "Who Goes There?" Carpenter's remake was said to be the closest to Campbell's story, and it's the most popular out of the 3 movies based on the book. Can I get a thumbs up so they can see this?
