Great to see and hear a 4 string, standard, plectrum banjo very well played PLUS a 4 string tenor banjo. Shaye, as usual, is excellent and fits right in to a typical raucous Australian jazz band !

An all-round good band, I was impressed by the string section , and some Chris Barber influence in the fine trombone solo. Nice to hear New Orleans music being played so well on the other side of the globe.

Thanks, MM. The full title of this song is 'When You and I Were Young, Maggie'. It was composed in 1866 by J. A. Butterfield and G. W. Johnson. As you can hear, it's a standard 32-bar song, structured a-a-b-a (so with a Middle Eight) usually played, as here, in the key of F. Good to see Shaye setting a spirited tempo and then directing the traffic so generously and intelligently, and to have her 'trading fours' with the washboard.
@shurshot27644 жыл бұрын
How innovative is it to swap fours (tp/wb) on a song that is a century and a half old????? Queen Shaye!!!!
@PopsCoffee4 жыл бұрын
@@shurshot2764 Well, in the sense that it happens constantly in Tuba Skinny's performances, it's not innovative; but in so many bands everybody in turn gets to play a full 32-bar 'solo' chorus, to the point of banality, as indeed was threatening to happen here by the end of the clarinet solo, when Shaye stepped in to inject a little Tuba Skinny-style variety into the presentation with those fours. Also, giving the final 16 to the tuba a few moments later in the penultimate chorus was another neat Tuba Skinny-style stratagem.

As Pops Coffee has taught us to see, much of this arrangement is the typical Dixieland sort of thing Shaye avoids in TS videos. Queen Shaye, on her borrowed throne, gives us two delights, starting with the conversation with the washboard guy. That final tuba solo, so tender and sincere, brings tears to my eyes each time I hear it.

Wonderful piece of music, well played. It's interesting to see Shaye effectively lead a group of new (to her?) musicians and get such a good result.

@@robertwmarwin2018 It's a time honoured tradition that the cornet player directs the music in a jazz band. Particularly if it's a pick-up band. No cause to "wow" this particular obligation on any particular cornet player.

Really? Erica is fine, but a one trick pony. I don't find her voice very pleasant. Think Sissel, Linda, et al. Her presence is not mandatory every time Shaye blows her horn. think
