The Most Misunderstood Call of Duty

As we sink our teeth into Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 let’s take a look back at one of the most misunderstood Call of Duty games- Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare. This is a game that I both loved and hated but it by no means deserves the hate it receives.

Infinite Warfare is such a masterpiece. Brian Bloom is not only a great voice actor, but a phenomenal story writer.

It was probably because I was so young at the time but when I completed this game I almost cried. I really enjoyed the character interactions, but Mars could have used more development. I think The Expanse did a good job of showing off what a realistic Mars in opposition to Earth could look like where yes they are an equal and even have better ships than Earth but this comes at the cost of being outnumbered like 3 to 1 and lots of money needing to be diverted to the military which has stalled the proper colonisation of mars for a century or so.

Yes Expanse is probably the best portray of potential Earth Mars rivalry. I also think that a big part of what made it better in Expanse than in Call of Duty is that they didn't made Mars in to a one dimensional villain. P.S. Sorry for my bad English

I honestly think this was one of the best COD Campaigns of all time. The Multiplayer wasn’t its strong suit, but the story and vibes were fantastic. I honestly think this standalone story is better than any of the current games stories.

It seems that at the time, no one wanted to give this game a chance because AW and BO3 had burned them out on futuristic experiences and they wanted to go back to the days of WaW, the original MW trilogy, and the first two BO games. They had no idea what they had back then, since games that have come out since like BO4, Vanguard, or the new MW3 had campaigns that were absolute garbage or none at all.

The problems you bought up with the SDF actually got me thinking. Why does Mars have such a strong military full of mainly human fighters? Wouldn't it make more sense to prioritize bots?

The multiplayer was the best of the jetpack era and better than Ghosts. Also better than the MW copy paste slop they are putting out now

The multiplayer is what sunk it. I played it's beta and was turned off so much by it. But I gave the campaign a chance, told myself I'd only play the first hour. 4 hours later I bought the game and completed the rest of the campaign the next day. It was very well written in my opinion, I kind of wish Kit wasn't in the game to give back some budget to make the campaign a bit longer and more time with the Mars conflict ON Mars. I think not giving the SDF much explanation was kind of the point, gameplay elements notwithstanding. I'd imagine a smaller nation who had complete isolation from Earth for decades would have developed very differently to the point that they would seem almost alien. Answering the call of duty may not always have a clear or 'good' reason either. Sacrifice and coming when called regardless of reason I would say is a central theme of the whole franchise. I also wonder if Olympus Mons was supposed to be the crown jewel and only big play Mars had since it seemed to be involved with everything Reyes and crew investigated. The writer of the campaign also played Reyes, fun fact. Also plays Varric in Dragon Age. And has writing credits for Cod games since Ghosts, and as recently as Blops 6.

When I saw the multiple side missions in IW, I thought it will be like BO2 where your effort and decisions will transform the ending of the story into variations that reflects what you choose. But nope, killing all the HVT and blowing up the ships means nothing really other than an upgrade. It feels like the dev got told that they can do whatever they want, only to find out when the management look at the work at 70% completion, force the devs to wrap it up and ship it. As it was "good enough" and campaign doesn't make that much money anyway. I love IW and still replays it to these days, but I would die for a sequel where they can make the perfect game they want.

The story of the game is enjoyable and focused on sacrifice. The world building is terrible and it is not even remotely close to anything resembling a real universe.

I liked infinite Warfare. One of the only Call o Duty campaigns that made me cry. And the online was pretty fun. It got so much unwarranted hate.

I liked the campaign but they should have gone further in space, like a different solar system. Then have two different factions fight other, while controlling cities across different planets and moons.

Great video. Infinite Warfare's campaign was incredible and i'm sad it came out at the wrong time, making its reception so poor. Would have loved to see a sequel in that sci fi setting.

This game holds a special place in my heart, because, when the game released, Star Wars battlefront 2 released, and this angered me as, cod had wars in the stars, and Star Wars did not. Battlefront 2 EA was a mess and kinda lied in their ads. COD infinite warfare was a better Star Wars than Star Wars. Great story and characters with epic set pieces. Also, as someone who studies space as a past time, I know a bit more about what space has to offer. This of coarse, assumes that mars controls their side of space completely, their are asteroids out their with the wealth and material to make an entire economy crash, just because there is so much of it. I think it’s called 16 Psyche, it’s in the asteroid belt between mars and Jupiter. The current discussion is, whether we should bring that asteroid near to earth, to be mined, as there is so much, it may cause economic problems. So it’s entirely possible that mars could sustain and manufacture a flotilla with no problem. And if you wanna bring real politics to compare this story to real life, it makes sense to see an empire who has a ton of advantages, try to take more. There are cartoonishly evil people that spawn from time to time, like Ancient Rome, where they just went and conquered because they could. You don’t get big without causing a few war crimes and being ambitious. The U.S. is a great example with the Indians.

IW has one of the best campaigns in Call of Duty history. Did it need a few more minutes in the oven? Sure, but so did MW3 (the original one, not the MWII paid DLC), and that is still a beloved game. IW is a deeply emotional game. It’s brutal, and it’s not even really about the war you’re fighting. It’s about the characters, really sticking to the axiom that a soldier really fights for the men to the left and right of him. It didn’t deserve the hate. Also, I’m not an MP player, so I don’t know or care how that was. I play campaign, so I was eating good.

I absolutely hated the trailer when it was announced due to the future warfare but when I got the special edition game as a Christmas gift I ignored it for a few years until bo4 came out than tried it out and I was impressed with the campaign however I did feel like the game was a bit too short and I honestly didn’t feel connected to the game but I will say that out of the future warfare campaign of that era it was definitely the best one

If I had the ability to change the campaign I would have changed, instead of taking place over a few days I would have made it taken place over a few years and after the attack on earth which would have half of the unsa fleet left but over the cost of the war it would have been left to Tigress and retribution just left, then I would have added a couple more missions to flesh out the characters and to feel connected to them but keep the main missions of the game

Game would have improved infinitely if dialouge and ""characters"" did not exist. It is like level/gameplay designers made a great game and then lead designer and writers made a blood vow to ruin it.
