I took the more serious tone Asher's billy had compared to Levi's Billy as intentional. We're constantly reminded throughout the film that billy is struggling with his abandonment issues and other trauma he's faced in the past so he's a lot more closed off, all while he's still a kid (17). When he turns to Shazam, he's much bigger and much more powerful. I feel like he sees that as a way to escape what he deals with as regular small kid billy, so he becomes more confident and playful and he's able to just become a lot more goofy behind a 6"2 (or wtv) muscular and powerful mask hahaha. When he doesnt have that power, he feels small again and his issues feel like its greater than his power. You even see how serious he was when he had the whole conversation with his mom, and when he turns to Shazam after he becomes that confident person again and just gives a wink and flies off. idk i feel like it gives Billy as a whole a lot more layers

Thank you for mentioning the difference between Asher Angel's version of the character and Zachary Levi's. I really wish Levi would have played his character as earnestly as Angel did. Here's a kid that's had such a rough life and says the magic word and it's all forgotten, until he says it again.

I know this movie is fiction however, the problem I have with the narrative that gods lorded over humans, is that it is bs. And the proper term is "demigods". The names of the demigods are generally the posts they occupy not necessarily actual names. For example the demigod Varuna is known as Poseidon in Greek mythology; Neptune in Roman mythology; Tangaroa in Polynesia and so on throughout the world for several millennia. The demigods were never there to exploit humanity, rather to maintain the infrastructure of this universe. That should be evident and logical given each have dominion over particular aspects of the universe-water, climate (which impacts food production), the various elements are under their control and so on. It is important to tell the truth at the very least to convey the proper narrative that undergirds these mythologies for in them are needed wisdom for humanity.

Honestly, I’m happier when bullying against disabled people isn’t specifically called out in fiction. It treats us as people rather than poor defenseless objects of pity. Freddie’s portrayal of his impairment was great in this film. The tree shirt that he was wearing is the symbol of the white tree of Gondor from Lord of the Rings. I don’t think it was focused on in the movie, but in the books it’s a tree that’s dying because Gondor has no king, only to be restored at the end when Aragorn is crowned. Foreshadowing the tree in the Greek gods realm at the end of the movie.

There was a possible reference to Tangled. When Shazam was recapping the bridge incident, the reflection of the lights they have hanging in the lair are showing on the TV and it looks like they’re floating above the water like the lanterns in Tangled, AND THEN Zachary Levi says “hey, where’s Eugene?” Which is the actual name of the character he played in that movie. I could be wrong, but it was cool noticing that because Tangled is my wife’s favorite movie.

Ya know... I'd kind of be down to see if DC made a fall of the gods movie. And it's just the story of Aries killing all the gods. Maybe they could give us a bigger scene of the attack from dark seid and afterwards is when Aries strikes. When the gods have been weekend and the fighting strengthened him

The "all about family" scene was not filmed in Philadelphia, it was filmed a few blocks from where I live. I didn't realize it until I watched the movie.

The dome barrier bursting was foreshadowed with the plasma globe earlier after Billy had his dream.

Levi's performance worked for me because we didn't see the kid much at all. The kid with the crutch we saw a lot of and he was goofy too at 16 or 17 so it works.

I really enjoyed the movie. The Billy Batson cameo was hilarious. I'm with Voss I can enjoy a comic book movie for being a comic book movie. I'm old enough to remember when we didn't have any other than Superman. These are still great times to be a fan Uh Uh HUH!!

Freddy’s tree shirt is from Lord of the Rings! It’s the pattern on Boromir’s gauntlets and Pippins tunic!

I had fun during this movie, not all the jokes landed for me but the ones that did really got me. I just wish someone got Bane’d during the fight with Helen Mirren.

That was my prime beef with this movie: 18-year-old Billy Batson was a mature teenager, while his counterpart, Shazam, was STILL a goofy kid? That made no sense! There HAD to be some consistency!

My only complaint us that Zachary/Shazam acts more like Freddy than Billy.

My complaint is that Billy (Asher Angel) was barely used in the movie. He only appeared in 4 scenes while Levi was predominantly in 90% of the movie

Ironically, this film was supposed to be post The Flash and carried over into the DCU. The costume redesigns were meant to be part of the changes to the timeline as well. But because of issues with Ezra Miller and Flash was pushed back, this film was released first.
