Arris, thank you. This episode brought back some childhood memories about Golden Age SHAZAM. I was born in 71, and my Dad taught me to read by reading comics (you read words and see context. He is a member of MENSA). When you mentioned how SHAZAM was more popular around then, it reminded me of my Dad and Uncles discussing why SHAZAM was better than Superman. Of course, I also loved the TV show as a kid. Thank you.

Same here, but also...meh, DC screwed up and allowed Marvel to use the name for another character. After "DC" sued Fawcett Comics because they were jealous of CPT Marvel's popularity, they got access to the character and just sat on it.

I find it pretty funny though. DC let the trademark go dormant when they sued Fawcett comics over Captain Marvel and won so since I’ve had to call the books/comics Shazam but kept the name Captain Marvel. Back then fans would always think of him as Shazam first and Captain Marvel second. Now they just made his name Shazam and people are willing how jarring it is and DC has no idea what to do. I’d say they should just use Captain Thunder (which they’ve done numerous times). It pays nice homage to the original name fawcett comics kicked around and sounds fine. If not make a different name. But Shazam really doesn’t work (especially if they want to continue implications that Billy eventually replaces the wizard and future champions have to say his chosen name).

I always loved that Shazam always rivaled the power of Superman in strength although in some versions like injustice he’s portrayed as some b list hero, I wish we could see an old man Shazam older than the kingdom come version

I know why they needed to get Captain Marvel out of the way in "Injustice." They needed Superman to be an insurmountable enemy, they can't have his equal around. So they nerfed him and Superman swatted him out of the way. It's a great disservice and, no pun intended, injustice, to the character and all of his fans.

@@ReconViper1 It would have been better if Superman and Black Adam fought him 2-on-1 like in that one story where it was Superman and Captain Marvel vs Black Adam. Seriously, Superman's heat vision cannot kill Cap. Only magic as powerful or more so than his can do that. That's where Adam comes in. Plus a sword made by a god (Diana's sword) and you've got a proper death. OH and for anybody that would say that Supes could hurt Captain Marvel, let me remind you the guy was turned inside out by a non-magical weapon that would have killed Supes and the others, and he healed from it instantly.

@@crowfather3838 I've always seen the two as an even match. (That's why the Devs needed to get him out of the game.) It would be a long battle, and even the winner would be in bad shape. Unless, like you said, Superman had Black Adam with him. Even then it would be a battle, but Captain Marvel could very well lose that fight.

Shazam, is the wizards name (one of many), the magic word Billy says, and used in the title of some of the runs. But Billy turns into Captain MARVEL! Even though they tried to re-introduce him as "Shazam!" in the later runs, no other character ever calls him that nor does he ever refer to himself by that name in any run that I've ever read. It's just CYA because of Marvel/Disney. He was Captain Marvel for over 50 years and it's still the exact same character. And remember when Freddy get's his own powers, what magic word did he say? "Captain Marvel!"

Everyone always puts Captain Marvel against Superman, which is fair, but no one ever mentions. The captain. Marvel‘s powers are based in magic, and that’s one of sup’s main weaknesses. Without this context, I think it’s skews the results.

I don't think using Shazam V Superman fights as a measure of power is necessarily fair. Superman has a known vulnerability to magic. Shazam is almost a perfect counter for anything and everything Superman can do, other than sheer wit.

The problem with Shazam is that writers are so inconsistent with him and seem to have forgotten some of his original abilities and don’t seem to understand others. Some seem to think he gets one power from each deity even though in Canaan it shown he can get multiple powers. Plus the power of Zeus is so poorly laid out. Even though he has the speed of mercury and has been shown in other comics to be able to catch the flash while he’s running at his TopSpeed but Shazam is at a dead stop, the times he’s not even in the top five. It’s just ridiculous. If I was a writer I have a great idea for a version. But I’m not

DC nurfs this character so hard its not cool. A perfect Goku/Vegeta-esk type dynamic just sitting right infront of them (Shazam & Superman) that wont intefere with the golden Batman & Superman dynamic already established, as that dynamic is far more nuanced. A Shazam & Superman rivalry could be for straight thrills and cracked out fun power and strength/skill growth in combat. Sups & Cap could go all out with eachother without worriying too much on injuring one another and under friendly circumstances all the while pushing eachother to new hights when both working toghather and in training. Which is always fun to see. A chad god-wizard vs a chad OP alien solar battery.

It’s awkward but all we can do is blame DC for ruining the character out of jealousy and spite. The true Captain Marvel belongs to MARVEL Comics and has for decades. Long before DC even acquired the character. Considering most who complain about the name weren’t even alive in the 60’s, when Marvel’s version made its debut, I’m surprised people aren’t used to it by now. It’s time to get over it.
