a very interesting story about the path of this song to recognition in Europe and the USA. The composition was presented to the Western public by the Ukrainian Republican Chapel under the direction of Oleksandr Koshyts, who toured on behalf of the Government of the Ukrainian People's Republic in the countries of Western Europe and North and South America in order to promote the idea of Ukrainian independence (1919-1924). The performance of the Ukrainian choir in Paris, where the Paris Peace Conference was held, was important, at which the Ukrainian delegation wanted to show that Ukraine has the right to independence, that Ukrainians are different from russians. unfortunately, the idea of Ukrainian independence was rejected by the world community, and Ukraine was occupied by communist russia

"Shchedryk" (Ukrainian: Щедрик, from Щедрий вечiр, "Bountiful Evening") is a Ukrainian shchedrivka, or New Year's song, known in English as "The Little Swallow". It was arranged by composer and teacher Mykola Leontovych in 1916, and tells a story of a swallow flying into a household to sing of wealth that will come with the following spring. "Shchedryk" was originally sung on the night of January 13, New Year's Eve in the Julian Calendar (December 31 Old Style), which is Shchedry Vechir. Early performances of the piece were made by students at Kyiv University. "Shchedryk" was later adapted as an English Christmas carol, "Carol of the Bells", by Peter J. Wilhousky following a performance of the original song by Alexander Koshetz's Ukrainian National Chorus at Carnegie Hall on October 5, 1921. Wilhousky copyrighted and published his new lyrics (which were not based on the Ukrainian lyrics) in 1936, and the song became popular in the United States and Canada, where it became strongly associated with Christmas. Conceptually, the Ukrainian lyrics of this song meet the definition of a shchedrivka, while the English content of "The Little Swallow" identifies it as a kolyadka or, in other words, a Christmas carol.

This is a children's Christmas song - a carol, traditionally on Christmas Day children used to go from house to house and sing carols, for which they were supposed to be given candy or money, like in the USA on Halloween. That's why a children's choir to me sounds more aesthetic and better - [ Дитячий хор співає "Щедрик" ].

What a revelation! I heard this on The Umbrella Academy (season 4 episode 2) today and I looked it up, because I could not recognize the language. It's in Ukrainian. This is one of my favorite songs to sing in choir as it's hypnotic, as a performer it brought me to a trance like elevated state, and it's just so much fun to sing in a group. You can also improvise this song which we would do for fun outside of performances. It makes sense this song predates Christianity. Music is divine. And humans have always connected to the divine spirit through art and interpretation. Anyways thank you Bel Canto and the Umbrella Academy for finding this gem and making it pop culture.

Przepięknie!! I’m so happy to learn that this song is originally Ukrainian, I can’t wait to teach my Taiwanese student this original version… I know Slavic melody when I hear it… Slavs go through lots of pani, our history is a constant war - Slava Ukraini💙💛, love from Poland

(sorry that my Polish isn’t very well)

@@blaghtirius No bo na Litwie mieszkają Rosjanie. Ukraińcy są tu dopiero od niedawna i raczej jeszcze nie śpiewają w litewskim chórze. Zresztą mnie to bez różnicy

@@kristofforos1007 Twoje plotki nie zmienią relacji między Ukraińcami i Polakami, nie rozumiem, dlaczego jesteś przywiązany do tego sukinsyna Putina. Czy po prostu nienawidzisz Ukraińców?

Great performance! One of the best I’ve ever heard of this song! And - in addition - by our dear Lithuanian friends!

This is a truly lovely performance. The high school choir I direct is learning this now. I played this video for them today. They noticed and enjoyed your pure vowels, clear consonants and the beautiful dynamic changes and interpretation. (I could listen to your sopranos all day long!)
