My step daughter was 9 when my wife and I married. Three days after we met she asked her mom to ask me if it would be ok if she called me dad. She hit me like a train. I was so humbled. I cried and said of course she can. She is 25 now and she is my pride and joy... 🙏💪

I don’t personally call my stepdad “Dad”, but everything else is spot on. I’m not incredibly close with my step dad but I can’t name a single time he didn’t show up to a football game to watch the halftime show. Once I got my license he and my mom could have just not gone to the games but they always went until at least half time, even in snow, or rain. He showed up to all of my band concerts and was always sober when he attended. That alone is more than my dad has done for me in years. This really reminded me that I need to be more thankful that I wake up everyday in his house and not my dads.

Amen, i helped to raise 5 other children along with my birth son since the youngest was 6 months old, today those children are grown up with kids of their own and they kno me as nana along with their birth mom, i don't believe i cldve loved them any more if i had given birth to them myself, i still love their mom even though were not together anymore, she literally my family now because now we share nieces, her sister got married to my brother and they had 2 girls, wierd huh lol, my ex and i now share nieces, and all of my ex's kids are still my kids, they've always called me "mama Dijah", i remember how their dad's would say that they appreciated me for stepping up and taking care of their own kids because they were no where around, well at least 1 out of five was in his son's life, but I've always loved kids, as a kindergarten teacher children was always my life

How's it going now? As a child of an alcoholic, I'd say don't worry about how things are coming together. So many parents don't even try -- just offer what you can and put in effort. Let her vent, let her cry, accept her anger -- her emotions are real and deserve acknowledgment. Just be there now. It's not enough, but it is what it is, and it's so much better than nothing.
