Hello Melvin Thinks ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). Hello Melvin. I am a 73 year old Scouser, who has been into music since a very early age. Played in a heavy rock band for a while. Loved and enjoyed music of many forms for many years. I have been astounded by new listens quite a few times, but never to the extent of this [Nightwish]. There is a lot to learn about the band as a whole and also each and every member. It's quite a quest you've put yourself on - I hope you take it up! Getting into Nightwish is like playing Dungeons and Dragons for the first time - it's good, but just gets better each time you think you've got it! Excellent reaction! Yes, you got it spot on with Emppu’s solo. Less is more indeed. And Jukka’s drumming is amazing. He beats those drums harder than a ginger stepchild😆! As you go further in your Nightwish journey you will see the importance of Marco on bass with his amazing vocals and the songwriting genius that is Thuomas on keyboards. It's nice to see another fellow Brit at last discovering probably the greatest symphonic metal band, Nightwish. This Wacken 2013 concert was very special as it introduced most of this 82,000 crowd to Nightwish's latest singer the six foot tall Dutchwoman Floor Jansen. She only joined mid tour in late 2012 with 48 hours to learn the setlist as she flew from The Netherlands to the USA. At this concert she had only recently returned to Europe after ten months with the band. You are right to say that she brings variety to this song as she does to so many. Every song was written for one of the previous singers Tarja (operatic) and Anette (pop) and Floor nails them all

Hello! This was song 13 of 15 and Floor had been head banging, windmilling, dancing for an hour and ten minutes before this. In all styles of singing (she growls a little too) She took off a short instrumental for a costume change. Every song at this concert is great, you can't go wrong reacting to any of them. Biggest rabbit hole in music you are staring into. Nightwish go all the way from acoustic, folk music to thrash metal. And all at an insanely good level. If you want to try a more metal song from Nightwish, look at one called Romanticide - personally, i reckon you should meet the bass player marco and his voice - Ever Dream would be a good follow up.

I absolutely agree with you, about phones in concerts!!!! Floor her name is derived from the Roman Goddess of Spring, Flora. Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy. Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6). She can sing from classical to belting (Power belt) and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉. Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016. From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020. And the master of this magic is: Our Metal Mozart Tuomas Holopainen (founder, leader, keyboardist, songwriter and the main composer for Nightwish) Tuomas the keyboardist writes about 95% of Nightwish songs, music and lyrics. He also composes the music for the backing track they use. It is recorded in London with musicians from The London Philharmonics. Pip Williams helps with the orchestration. There are two London based choirs too on the backing track, the other one is a children's choir. And of course with a synth you can do a lot. This was recorded at the 2013 Wacken (pronounced Vahken) Open Air festival in Germany in front of an audience of 82,000 people (one of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world and one of the largest open-air festivals in Germany). In the girl's defence, she wasn't just standing and she only took one pic. As tt whole concert back then, take another look especially during the quieter moments. At the time of video Floor was on a temp contract to finish the tour for the previous singer. (Everyone knew by then she would be hired permanent if a deal could be reached.) The break in the middle is called an interlude. (symphonic music term) Sadly the drummer retired after this tour with some health issues due to sleep problems..

@@melvinthinks You mention that Floor doesn't just sing opera, neither does Simone. Epica has many tracks where Simone doesn't sing in in her opera voice. Among which many beautiful ballads. I like the band interaction of Epica and the fact they all write songs, versus Tuomas (brilliant as he is) writing most, if not all songs, for Nightwish. Especially now Marko (the bass player/second singer) has left the band two years ago. Don't get me wrong, I am a big fan of both bands, just if I had to rank them in their current lineups ... It is all personal preference of course, but I recommend listening to more songs of both. They both have a huge catalog.

Nightwish helped create symphonic metal and was and still is the most successful band of the subgenre. The first singer Tarja Turunen was the model of Simone Simons. The band disappears in the middle of the song because only backtracks are playing. Without backtracks, Nightwish would have to tour with a symphony orchestra and an opera choir. The recordings are from these. This is one of drummer Jukka Nevalainen's last concerts. Shortly after starting the recordings for the next album, he had to give up due to chronic insomnia. He asks his friend Kai Hahto to take over temporarily. He is not returning and is now in the management of the band. Kai became his successor. Floor has been the temporary help here for 10 months. Internally, she has already been hired as the number three singer. There is no studio recording of any of the songs at this concert with her. The first studio album with her was not released until 2015. Floor usually sings a mix of pop and opera. She never said that Tarja was her model. It was the journalist (Daniel from Wikimetal Brasil) who said that after she named a few bands as her influences. (Lacuna Coil. Nightwish, Kamelot etc). Most Dutch female singers from metalbands are influenced by Anneke van Gierbergen (The Gathering), Tuomas told in an interview that he wanted a band with a female singer after he heared The Gathering. I have nothing against Tarja, she is a great singer and perhaps even better than Anneke, but Anneke opened a lot of doors for female fronted metal bands.

Un coucou de l'armée NIGHTWISH de France, très très bien et excellente réaction à l'écoute du plus grand groupe du monde pour ma part. Mais vous n'avez qu'effleuré le dessus de l'iceberg et vous n'êtes qu'a l'entrée du terrier de lapin. Je vous souhaite de bons floorgasmes et continuez vos réactions nous serons toujours derrière vous pour vous soutenir pour notre groupe...... Encore plus d'écoutes s'il vous plait...... Merci. Faites le festival Open Air Wacken 2013, vous êtes sur de ne pas vous tromper, vous venez d'écouté la chanson 13 sur les 15 du set complet. Les quinze chansons du set sont des classiques pour tous les fans du groupe. Faites le Ever Dream qui commence comme une douce ballade voix piano et sur un signe de Marko ( le bassiste ) continue d'accélérer pour finir comme un train à grande vitesse, puis essayez une petite histoire comme storytimes ou alors du plus lourd avec Ghost River. ou encore plus lourd avec Romanticide..... Et je pense que notre ami Gabriel devait arriver sous peu, ( Un grand MERCI à Gabriel ) cliquez sur son nom et allez sur communauté, vous pourrez suivre sa liste en toute confiance avec les meilleurs mixages à la bonne vitesse et avec le meilleur audio. Continuez les filets du groupe sont tendus et il vous sera très difficile de vous en sortir, plus de NIGHTWISH s'il vous plait ........ Merci et à bientôt. At this point, Floor wasn’t even a permanent member of the band. Imagine that. As a fill-in vocalist, she is commanding the stage and that crowd. Her impact has got to be unprecedented in music.

On this night her membership was a secret known only to herself and the band, which almost certainly contributed to the absolute joy displayed by everyone on stage throughout the show.

Hey Melvin,welcome,and yes,you made some good remarks about Floor,she is considered (well at least by people who know her and that are loads of them) as one of the most versitile singers of our time. Sounds a bit boastful but dive into Nightwish and Floor solo and you will find out, why people say this. Nightwish Wacken 2013 is like a "feel good"movie,it won't dissapoint you.😉🤘 You also boost Emppu's (guitar player) ego to compare him with "David Gilmour",he will be honoured.👍

Yeah, Nighwish is a giant in the world of Symphonic Metal! They and Within Temptation both started in 1996 and are considered two of the pioneer groups of the genre-Simone Simons actually started studying opera because she was inspired by Nightwish’s original lead singer, Tarja. The one in this video is their third and current vocalist, Floor! Floor is also classically trained, but as you noticed she tends more towards contemporary pop and rock techniques and only really leans back into that operatic sound when she wants an certain effect. She’s an incredibly versatile singer! Anyway, about the song, Ghost Love Score, Consign to Oblivion, and Within Temptation’s The Truth Beneath The Rose to me are just the perfect examples of what makes Symphonic Metal unique. Calling them “songs” isn’t enough to encompass the fantastical, grandiose, evolving sound you experience listening to them. They’re true musical scores that tell you a story and take you on a journey. And these singers, man, the way symphonic metal backs up these beautiful, high voices with the heavy instrumentals makes them almost sound divine, like storytellers from a lost time of myth and legend rather than members of a metal band. There’s just something epic and otherworldly about it.

It's definitely a genre I wouldn't have gravitated towards had I not started this channel and were it not for your recommendations 👍 I actually haven't got Within Temptation on my list but they are now added so cheers again 😁 I plan on doing some throwbacks - which will be classics that I've heard before but some of my audience may not. I also wanna hit some punk/garage rock/stoner rock as I love these genres too. Hope you enjoy them and it might introduce you to some new bands too.

Yes, you are right. Jukka is a phenomenal drummer and so is his friend Kai who followed him on drums when Jukka was too ill to go on drumming for Nightwish. But Jukka still is with the band only now in management.

It's cool to know he's still part of the band though. I've since had the pleasure of seeing Kai perform via a few of my other music reactions - in both Nightwish and Wintersun. He's like a human metronome.

Hi again. I commented before but this just came to mind..... You mentioned your intro to Epica was Consigned To Oblivion. They actually do travel with their own orchestra and choir. Kind of sad that with such an amazing song, they didn't take a moment or 2 to show their counterparts. Such a song should demand that they show you "Epica" in its entirety. You'll see it though. That said, I recommend a duet... Simone and Floor Jansen? "Sancta Terra" live at Retrospect. You're gonna love it! But we'll see what the comments point to. 😊❤️🤘🤘
