Having a good work ethic is important for one self. I have noticed that if I do not give close to 80-100% it is hard to stay focused. 60% effort wuickly drops down to 25%. Also you lose the pride in your work and respect for your self. So I think doing a good work, is better and easier than slacking off. When ever I have been in work environment where people are not doing their job, being mean, etc. It is a miserable place to work.

I was married to a trash man. He brought home a car load of other people's trash every single day. I thought that was great until I learned that people throw stuff away for a reason. I thought bed bugs were a wives tale until that moment. Disgusting!!

My dad works in waste management and sanitation. It is a very physical job. But he and my mom go out of state for vacations, anniversary trips. It is a steady job with good pay that is allowing him to spoil his wife. And since they had us kids young they are both still in their 50s. I hope they get to keep having fun like this for the rest of their lives.

Yes! During the Covid lock down, a bunch of people I know across the city, taped huge "Thank You" signs on our trash bins. I went outside to retrieve my empty bin and the driver backed up to give me a wave and thank you back. We also put signs on our mailboxes! I appreciate everyone who does a job. I leave positive reviews constantly. Life can be hard so a smile, a compliment, a thank you is important.

Waste Management people are some of the hardest workers you’ll ever see. Some of us are disgusted by carrying a plastic bag twenty feet to a trash can on the side of our house. These guys are dumping rotting food, dog waste, etc, 100x per day into the back of a truck and are doing it every day in the most brutal heat, cold, snow or rain. Crazy props to those guys. Nobody should be looking down on them. Our lives would come to a halt without them.

There's book by the famous Dutch author Rutger Bregman with the title "why garbage collectors earn/deserve more than bankers" (my translation) in which he talks about some garbage collector strike in New York in the 70's (?) which caused mayhem, as a well as a strike on Wall Street which went by largely unnoticed. Waste treatment is really important and these workers should get higher wages. (I read the book 10 years ago, I don't remember more details.)

If "supporting a family" was what made a job respectable, unmarried garbage collectors would be disrespected, and married drug dealers would be respected. A job is respectable when it produces a value to society that matches the rewards received from society. Garbage disposal is of significant value, drug dealing isn't, and families are irrelevant.
