She stands up for the guy and not her sister, ugh. I am mixed myself and have heard the “good hair” line so often, and each time I make the person explain themselves. Then I just look at them silent until they do. Lots of blustering and backpedaling. It’s funny and sad at the same time. I’ve also heard, “ is that your real hair”, had ppl pull my hair to see if it’s attached, had ppl say I’m not really this or that because of my skin tone, say I speak too proper to be blah blah blah. It’s nuts. So many ignorant ppl in the world. Story 2: the couple only got their panties in a bunch because they love arguing and being overbearing to ppl. It sucks their kids won’t get to see the grandparents but it’s their parents own fault for being argumentative and ruining everyone’s time. The others must have been complaining about them to agree so readily to pay. Story 3: the husband sucks. I've noticed that men like the one in the last story (and there seems to be a lot of stories like that) seem to fail at seeing and understanding the actual problem. It's not about one single action in a single instance. The problem is about the intention behind the action and what the action represents and how it makes the person on the receiving end feel. Like in the case with the last story, if the mother-in-law keeps rejecting all deserts made by the wife, year after year, no matter what she makes and no matter how much effort she puts into it, it starts to feel personal. And I do think it's personal. I don't think the mother-in-law likes the daughter-in-law very much or has at least something against her. A normal mother-in-law, no matter what rules she has when organizing events, would at least accept some deserts (it doesn't have to be all of them or even every year, but at least some) made by the daughter-in-law even if they're not perfect, just to be considerate of the daughter-in-law's feelings instead of out right rejecting every single one of them every single year. Anyone making the decision of what to include in the menu would know that if they keep rejecting one person all the time, the person in question would feel left out. The only plausible reason for the mother-in-law to keep rejecting the daughter-in-law when knowing she would feel left out would be because she doesn't care, and that's assuming she's not rejecting the daughter-in-law on purpose. The husband saying that the wife is being unreasonable for not wanting to go to the family event is being an insensitive jerk because he just can't see why his wife is really hurt about this

This is why you shouldn’t talk politics. If you have different views than your loved ones, just agree to disagree. I have many people in my life that I don’t agree with, but that doesn’t affect our relationship. A lot of families and friends are breaking up because of this. Some political beliefs are almost like religion to some people. Even in my family, I have a niece who doesn’t talk to her mom anymore. It’s heartbreaking.

I think it depends on the political issue involved, such as whether LGBTQ+ people should have equivalent rights to what straight/cis people have. And yeah, she could’ve told him he was being an @sshole. But unless she explained why it wouldn’t do anything. Better to have him try and explain his own bs. Second story: Okay, Idk how to feel on this one. I don’t think OP should be making people pay to come to a thanksgiving gathering. It’s a gathering, it’s supposed to be a fun get together. People shouldn’t have to pay to come for that. And I know that they will get the money back but what if one person makes one slight comment about politics or accidentally says something. Are they going to lose their money because of that. I don’t get why OP didn’t just un-invite Kari and Bob in the first place. Just do that instead of making people give you 500$ Third story: This mom though. She’s acting like people are going to poison the food. And then the husband is like “People have preferences.” She rejected her every time. I wouldn’t call that a preference. But I don’t get the mom. Just because you don’t like something doesn’t mean other people won’t. I don’t get why she’s rejecting her. Like, let her make desserts. And then the husband just told her off and called her unreasonable. If I had worked hard to make a cookie and then the host just rejected it I wouldn’t want to come either. She worked hard on that cookie. Honestly if my girlfriend/boyfriend got rejected I would’ve been like “Just make them and bring them anyways, I’ll eat them.”

Third story has a brief update! OP added info about the sample send out,1) OP's younger sister and SIL's samples were also rejected, 2) his mother is always "careful" about the food menu categories, not just the dessert, so she also accepts samples for appetizers,salads, etc, and 3) she doesn't force them to send samples, it's voluntary (but I'm gonna say it, it sounds like she purposefully does this every year so to her it feels like each female in the family has to fight for her approval, but that's just my opinion 🙄) The actual update OP says things were getting "out of control" cause his brother called to tell him his wife (the SIL whose sample was also rejected) says she's also backing out of the invitation and spending Thanksgiving with her family 😂 Apparently OP's wife called her and told her what she was planning to do and SIL decided it was a good idea, so now OP's brother is mad at his wife for "encouraging" his wife on this. OP is now afraid younger sis might also follow their lead and not go. His final statement was "I guess we'll try to have a discussion with my mother about this soon and see how it goes." Man I hope OP finally sees his wife's view on this whole sample thing if SIL and possibly younger sister back up his wife on not going, but considering he said "I guess we'll have a talk with my mom" it sounds unlikely, he says it's like he doesn't really want to or like it's unnecessary but he can't think of anything better at this point. What do you guys think?
@yolas24222 жыл бұрын
There is actually an update with the cooking story, apparently OP called his brother and his wife is backing out of the family get together too, she's having the same problem as OP, the brother is angry at OP's wife, and OP is saying how he didn't know how it got out of control so quickly and said *who knows maybe my sister won't show up* something on that line, but he and his brother is discussing it with their mother at some point apparently, the update was posted from XO Stories if anyone wanted to go listen to the update it's the very first story played on the video and is their latest video. But it's not just the mother in the wrong, OP and the brother definitely is too, like why are they not defending their wives and sister if this is going on with her as well, that's just sad that if they wanted to bring something they can't because of the MIL's rule in which is kinda stupid I thought the more food the better, because it also meant less cooking for those who are hosting.

TLDR. Feelings are valid and narcissists are blind. Story 1. It says heaps about what kind of person the sister is by not immediately stopping her bf for being blatantly racist. Even if it turns out he was being naive, the sister has no right to demand an apology from OP. But I do hope all of them get better soon. Story 2. OP's methods are extreme but for good reason. The only reason Kari and Bob are kicking a fuss is because they won't be able to preach their politics and ruin what could be a perfectly calm and fun day. OP should consider a special method for them then: agree to the parents paying for EACH TIME they bring up politics. Everyone will see how messed up they are when the parents will be charged with potentially over thousands because they won't keep politics off the table like it's their only personality trait. Story 3. To the husband in this story: it's a WONDER why this woman is still with you when you bluntly invalidate her feelings despite her decision OBVIOUSLY not being because of the cookie sample. It may not matter to the husband but not being included like this is hurtful even if he doesn't see the problem. Instead of saying "oh my mom is just serious and careful" or "people have preferences", at least consider having empathy the next time the wife is feeling invalidated by the people closest to her.

Honestly if I were the couple in the last story I would ask one of the female relativates who also has to send in samples for the recipies they are using. Me being biracial with corkscrew curls hearing Story 1: "Okay, time to cut off both Grace and Isaac. He's a racist jerk, and Grace has no sense of family loyalty. Both of them, just bye." For Story 3, there's a way to settle it fully. Have the husband send the mother a sample and only say the wife made it. If she rejects it again, he'll know his wife is right. Otherwise I think the wife is completely right on this one.
@JesusKreist2 жыл бұрын
You assume the husband can cook, and even better than his wife at that. Unless the man has something to do with working in a restaurant as a chef it is unlikely. Especially in "traditional families". Plus the number of samples is relatively high. If the husband sends in a sample and it is only one of ... I don't know .. 10 it would only be a 1 in 10 chance his sample would be chosen. In other words it would be a 9 in 10 chance the husband and the wife would come to a false conclusion with "undeniable facts" ... How I came onto the number? Listen to the story once more, there are quite a few female family members mentioned that provide a sample, not just the wife. To spell it out= "My sisters (at least two if not more), my SIL (one), my wife (one) my female cousins (at least 2 if not more)" so at the very least the number of applicants is six. So the biggest chance the wife can numerically have is 1 out of 6, provided all samples are exactly as good as the next. And this was "only" the third sample rejected. And that is just for the relatively close proximity. I don't think guests are supposed to bring a dessert as a luggage in a plane when they arrive to TG. That the mother rejected her cooking and baking specifically is a thought she can have, but it can't be proven without forcibly strapping the mother into a lie detector.
@dowsingelf772 жыл бұрын
@@JesusKreist If you read carefully I did not say the husband had to cook it at all. I stated he only needed to send in a sample; could've even been store bought. Better still the sample should be something he knows his mother likes personally and that is exceptionally made. Furthermore, regardless of probability, the MIL knows whose sample is whose; the story never said the desserts were chosen at random. So MIL actually can pick and choose as opposed to randomly picking every dessert each time. Also, minor point but the holiday this concerned was Christmas, not TG.
@JesusKreist2 жыл бұрын
@@dowsingelf77 Potato Potato. If the holiday was christmas, TG or the main celebration for our god and savior the big spaghetti monster is completely irrelevant. There is way more competition about those samples than the wife obviously cares about. The mother has at the very least 6 samples of whatever she needs for the gathering and obviously chooses 1-3 of them. That the wife's samples did not get chosen might have something to do with adverse relationship with the MIL. Or more likely with the fact that other samples that arrived simply are better than her sample. If it was *ONLY* the sample of the wife that gets rejected every time an experiment like you suggested might bring clarity. Or not. As said, without strapping the Mother to a lie detector and/or subjecting her to "festive waterboarding" it is more or less impossible to know which of these instances actually apply. Not even if the husband submits a sample he acquired from a 5* chef, as by then the obviously capable of thinking and breathing at the same time Mother would disqualify the sample because it was a scam as it differs vastly from the samples she submitted before. You can bet your a$$ or other valuable parts of your body that after that the Mother *will* hold a grudge against the wife, regardless of the outcome. Overall your simple solution: #1 is unlikely to get the desired results #2 can backfire tremendously

@@JesusKreist You're inferring information here that the story never stated. It is possible to have up to 6 desserts at one event; ever been to an Italian Natale feast? While yes, we don't know if only the wife's stuff keeps getting rejected, if her samples keep being rejected that's a little specious. Again, the MIL knows who sent what, so it's not random or left to probability. If the MIL rejects the false sample on grounds of being too good or a scam, that's one thing. If she doesn't give a valid reason, that's another story. Finally... it's just a Reddit post, meant to be thought provoking or entertaining. It's great to give opinions and reasons why, but this feels a bit too much of a dissection.
@JesusKreist2 жыл бұрын
@@dowsingelf77 Yes, you keep referring to information not stated in the story. While it is possible one can have 6 desserts at a gathering, the 6 dessert samples are the very minimum the Mother can receive. Likely the number is a lot closer to 10. Plus having 6 different desserts at a private gathering is the exception, not the rule. If *ONLY* the wife's samples get rejected every time you might be correct. But that is not stated nor even hinted at in the story. Without evidence to the contrary one can only assume there have been more rejections than only the one.

I don't think that at least you have good hair was meant as a racist attack. She is biracial, she inherited her dad's hair. They are plenty of videos on here with women with typical afro hair and getting straight hair wigs. My dad is blonde and blue eyed. My mum dark olive Italian skin and black curly hair, her daughters me and my sister look more like her. His workmates would joke well we know who their mother is. A passing comment is just a passing comment. Why should she feel threatened for inheriting her dad's hair? People choose to be offended or not.
@moonyfruit Жыл бұрын
This was kind of what I was thinking. He didn't say that curly hair was "bad." (I've also personally known few black women to go curly and struggle to keep it straight, so he may have actually been referring to the stubbornness of it, who knows? We're only getting 1 biased side of the story, here.) Besides, a preference is a preference. Preference =/= racism. It's when it's absurd that it's racism in my opinion. I also totally agree that people choose to be offended. 👍

I think the only one being unreasonable in the last story is the husband, because his wife worked her butt off to bake something and then sent the sample in..only for the sample to get rejected AGAIN by her mother-in-law. hopefully the husband apologizes and realizes that his wife doesn't want to go to the party, because of the feeling that her baked goods weren't "good enough" more than once.

I mean, the whole idea of rejecting any food at a family get together is weird as hell to me. If people end up not really liking it, there will just be plenty of leftovers. What is the point in rejecting anything. I don't get it.
@arcticxabyss Жыл бұрын
@@moonyfruit yeah and it's one thing if the reason why the MIL rejected the food was because of it causing an allergic reaction to one or more people, but it's a whole different story if it was rejected because the MIL "didn't like it" for whatever reason.

1) you were a bit of a jerk. Also you did the right thing - especially if your sister wants to be with this guy for a long time. Teaching people to think is difficult and being a jerk is often a requirement. 2) You probably could have handled it better - paying a deposit was an ultimatum and for someone with such strong views it's understandable that they felt blackmailed and tried to fight it instead of complying. Best thing would have been to find a way to use their own views. Almost every single political party ever has something that says "don't be a total jerk" cause if you are people won't be willing to agree with you. 3) she was really upset and you just upset her more. I understand you find this unreasonable but you just decided she was wrong (not her actions but her thinking) try to think she is right and come up with a countermeasure. Best way to do that would be go to the Christmas dinner and be all gracious like nothing happened. Then start planning for the next festivity. What kind of sweets/cookies did your mom chose untill now? (are they very sweet? with/without butter? creamy or dry? and so on). Come up with a cake that should be accepted based on precedents. And then ask for the help of someone who lives by making desserts (it's a good investment for a peaceful life). Either your wife ends up able to do something that could actually be served at a restaurant or you lie and make a master do it. And then if it gets rejected again accept that she was right all this time

Last story: It is uncommon that the mother demanded dessert samples, but not unheard of. From the sounds of it the family is big and the number of people sending in samples is quite numerous. So the wife can't honestly expect to be chosen after only 3 times she tried. It is pretty unreasonable to assume because you and allegedly your husband like your cooking the persons from the other side of the country will like it as well. Since it is dessert and cookies the main culprit likely is called sugar.

as a black female with the "bad hair" hearing things like that is the reason why when I was younger I had so much hate for my hair and would let my mother straighten it everyday until it was damaged and fried. I'm tired of this racial bias that people have against ethnic features especially black ones. I don't think people even realize the history of harm that texturism has caused us black people (mainly women). And then people wanna question why we wear straight wigs and weave 🙄.
