I think the term white privilege arouses a level of defensiveness and anger that prevents the masses ability to understand the nuanced basis of its original meaning. It is a term I feel is a bit callous and too reductive to be frank. I certainly understand that being white will make my life comparatively easier in many environments if compared to a non white person in similar circumstances. But this does not mean that I would always feel or notice something that I’ve never lived without, I would likely assume it’s the same for everyone, or that if not the person must have done something wrong. This would only be apparent to me if my status as a white person were suddenly removed from me. Then normal day to day experiences would suddenly be very different to what I’m used to. But I think that the bulk of a lot of inequality is socio-economic and that this gets conflated with ethnic background a lot of the time. But for sure racial prejudice exists, otherwise why would it be that a less educated white family enjoys the same if not greater income status than the average middle class black family who are university educated. Clearly in that example something is amiss, it’s not the socio economic status or education so it’s reasonable to see that ethnic background plays a role in such instances.

When a certain race has many people acting in certain ways, generalizations are made for that entire race and in that sense, yes, there is a community. Cultural differences in race shouldn’t be erased like you are suggesting, but people need to be more accepting of other backgrounds. Every year at my work, we have a meeting about "micro aggressions and racism." Last year, they showed a video about racism but it showed only blacks. No other races. I am an Asian American high school teacher. So far I've worked in three different schools: Jewish private school, dominantly black public school and dominantly white public school. I've received some sort of racism from all three schools but the one that gave me the most (in terms of quantity and quality-wise) racism was from black students. Racism from the white students were minor and there was some racism from Jewish students but definitely not intense like from black students.

That's why it hasn't stopped we need to talk about racism its important to realize the difference in how poc are treated compared to a white person. It's important to have these so called "uncomfortable" conversations to see how the problem can be fixed just cause we stop talking about it doesn't mean racism will just stop. I hate when people try to ignore the issue it won't do anything but allow the problem to continue.

I’m wondering where my white privilege went when I was born into a poor family who struggled to make ends meet my whole youth. Where did my white privilege go when I applied to college grants and scholarships only to find that the number of grants/scholarships I could apply to as a straight white male were near nothing and would be near impossible to compete with other students if I didn’t have high marks in high-school (graduated with a 3.0GPA so I did ok, but not good enough). Where did my white privilege go as a young father struggling with health problems which forced my wife into the work force to keep us from going homeless? No one has ever given me a free handout or a “leg up” on another human being simply because I’m white. This argument supporting systemic racism is so utterly and completely asinine.

Hah tell me something. I wanted to apply for UCLA's film course and one of the first things stated on their site is basically that your chance of getting accepted is higher just based on your 'uniqueness' meaning being from lgbtq community or being a racial minority. Your skills and talent don't matter as much as your 'uniqueness' because it should provide you with enough insight to tell a great story. If that isn't racist and discriminatory against whites then I don't know what is. Moreover, somewhere on the way they forgot the best and most popular movies are completely leaving out questions of race, gender and politics because production companies want to ensure as many people come to theatres as possible. After reading their requirements I decided not to apply.

@@naverich4603 you guys act as if they casually choose students off the streets to get in. I’m a current med student who happens to know plenty of minority men students who otherwise couldn’t pay for college even with grants and money. The idea is to give them a head start simply because you would have an easier time getting in to med school than any other bob white student. White privilege being able to look over race in stories and not having to worry about racist undertones. It’s not about you as an individual but what society has allowed for you. If a college rejects you, you can simply apply for another college and they will more than likely insult you.

As I was also homeless at one point, I have seen and heard countless opportunities for whites, and the micro aggression blacks face as homeless folks. The idea that the black man was “gambling” addict, a drug addiction and all sorts of terms.

Peyton Harrison I’m not sure I understand your question but I’ll try to answer it.... white privileged is racial and cultural... It’s racial because before 1964 white privilege was written into law via slavery and Jim Crow for 345 consecutive years. Slavery and Jim Crow were predicated on race. Its cultural because white supremacy is apart of everyday American customs in ways so benign you don’t even notice... like the color of band aids... or googling “beautiful woman” and seeing mostly white faces.
