the mexico stories are pretty valid. I grew up in mexico and they will definitely take advantage of you if they know you're not from there. it's always better to travel with someone whose first language is spanish. however don't let that discourage you from going! my cousins from the states were iffy about going to mexico at first and now they go down every weekend. also Tim is right about the tacos! if you ever go down to mexico I definitely recommend machito tacos and tacos sudados. translated it literally says sweaty tacos but they are just steamed tacos served with pickled jalapenos and carrots and that stuff slaps.
