As a South African, I always struggle with this. Americans killing our Big 5. There always seems to be a justified reason such as overpopulation or the funds going to conservation. Are elephants really overpopulated? Do all the funds really go to conservation? Or do we just convince ourselves otherwise? I'm sure the animal won't go to waste, but elephants are one of the most intelligent animals on earth and it sucks seeing one being shot in the head. Witnessing an elephant's life extinguished, only to be replaced by a callous grin for a trophy, leaves a bitter taste of despair.

>"As a South African, I always struggle with this." I don't, and no one actually cares about your nationality to begin with. >"Americans killing our Big 5." Lol, I'm sorry. YOUR Big 5? Says who? How do they all belong to you? This isn't even in the same country. >"There always seems to be a justified reason such as overpopulation or the funds going to conservation." And they're both correct, whether you like it or not. >"Are elephants really overpopulated?" In Botswana, yes. >"Do all the funds really go to conservation." The funds go both to conversation and community upliftment, yes. >"Or do we just convince ourselves otherwise?" Who is we? The researchers on the ground? They didn't "convince" themselves, they made a conclusion based on their own analysis. Game departments base their management practices off of said analysis. >"I'm sure the animal won't go to waste, but elephants are one of the most intelligent animals on earth and it sucks seeing one being shot in the head" This isn't an argument, this is an appeal to emotion. It has no place in a logical discussion. >"Witnessing an elephant's life extinguished, only to be replaced by a callous grin for a trophy, leaves a bitter taste of despair." Spoken like a true South African, total cringe. No one's impressed.

It certainly isn't easy to hunt such big and dangerous animals, and these many couch sitting critics condemning hunting and hunters as reckless, murderous swine driving all species to extinction , etc, are for the most part a bunch of ignorant people! In the first place are elephants in specifically Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa all but on the verge of extinction!! On the contrary, there are areas where local communities' very existence is under threat due to an enormous overpopulation of elephants! Are you even aware of that? These herds of elephant destroy habitats by breaking and destroying trees by the thousands! I have grown up here, and have witnessed in person a herd of 5-600 elephants in the north of Namibia! Do you have any idea what that looks like? It is extremely scary! Where is Africa supposed to go with all these animals if their numbers cannot be controlled by selective hunting? As one African minister recently said: maybe we should send 20000 elephants to Europe and see how they deal with that!!

Just do a quick Google search and you will find how many peoples are killed every year by elephants. These are not pet elephants bro they do a lot of harm to crop fields, live stocks etc. And they can destroy forests. I live in Bangladesh and in hill tracks of Chittagong there are a lot of Indian elephants. Though not as big as african bush elephants these elephants every year cause considerable damage to villages there. But unfortunately Big game hunting is not permited in my country. And one more thing, hunting in the video is controlled hunting. And money spend by these hunters are helping to save these elephant. Coz this money helps their government to stop illegal poaching. So bro next time before you decide to be a complete idiot by commenting such things, atleast make sure you know what you are talking about... Fool

I find it revolting, and I have no problem shooting animals for food and protection of forests/agriculture. I just hope there's an element of game control here, too, and they don't just die as an expensive hobby for some bored Texan housewife. (Also, the elephants basically just stand there. You can't miss. They don't run. I've seen wild boars who were more dangerous and difficult to shoot.)

It isn't unreasonable to expect a total population of 1.2 million or more. Scent blocking clothing is ok if you care for it correctly. It needs to be washed in special scent free detergent, sealed in bags, and stored in a cool place when it isn’t being used. But, even with that, there’s plenty coming off you deer can smell easily, especially your breath. I own a lot of very expensive camo, kuiu, First Light, etc. Including scentlok stuff, and I’ve definitely been winded while using it. I definitely wouldn’t put my faith in it, you’re better off with good digital camo and a tree stand than scentlok and a ground blind.

I do. I wore Axil in-ear hearing pro on a recent safari, and never go without anymore when deer hunting back here in the states. Very easy to have whispered convos with the PH wearing those. In my 50s now, older and wiser. We didn't have good hearing pro 30 years ago, and while easier today than years ago, it's still a bit of a pain to buy a suppressor. But, they don't make suppressors for doubles, so there's that, at least for this hunt. The Axils are great. They amplify ambient noise, like deer walking across dry leaves - helpful in thick timber to be able to hear when you still can't see them yet - but dampen gun fire.

@@terrywilson9500 The ele population in Botswana alone is about 130,000, and is the largest population of them of any country in Africa. Zimbabwe is 2nd with about 100,000. Kenya, where elephant hunting is illegal and has been since the early 1970s, has around 40,000. Have a guess at which of those 3 countries has the worst poaching problem. Human to elephant conflict in those places is a non-trivial problem for those people. Elephants kill locals and destroy entire crops. Subsistence farming of perhaps 15 - 20 acre plots is the norm in those regions - without tractors or livestock to help, that's all a man and his family can manage. What is a man supposed to feed his family on when 1 or 2 elephants can come through and eat his entire plot of millet in a single night (ele eat about 500 - 600 lbs of food per day)? One of the things they do is put out poison, killing indiscriminately. And when scavengers like lions, hyenas, jackals, honey badgers, and vultures come along to eat those poisoned animals, they all die, too. Wildlife habitat has shrunk considerably since 1900, when the entire continent's population was around 100 million. Today, human population is around 1.3 billion. I'm a life-long hunter, but had always been uncomfortable with the idea of hunting elephants (and big cats). Wild animal populations must be managed now, the same way we've been managing domesticated livestock for centuries on end. If cattle had no economic value, there would be few of them. It's the same with wild animals, and hunting imparts the greatest economic value to them. When villagers know they're going to get free meat as hunting parties pass through, they put up with the depredations of their crops by the ruminants and of their livestock by predators - the free meat is a bigger economic gain to them than the loss of their crops, cattle, or goats. And they're more than willing to snitch on poachers. I'll likely not ever hunt elephant because I won't ever be able to afford it - except maybe a tuskless cow (a genetic defect that game departments across Africa are doing what they can to extirpate)

I slowed down the moment you were referring to (13:09, not 15:09), and the elephant dropped immediately after the hunter's second shot went off, not the PH's. It seems as if he tried aiming for the hip as there was a good amount of dust that came off that area.

You are right Max. The length of the video is 15:09 and the “ ticking “ is at 13:09 when she took her 1st shot. If the PH had shot it on the hip, it would have sank on its hip and not forward and down on its knees. But one thing is certain. The second & third shot or both did it. So we should give her the benefit of doubt. After all, we were not on the scene to check out the bullet holes too. A Clock Ticking at 1400 , you can see bullet wound behind the ear…side brain shot 👍
