Ironically, She-Hulk was created as a character to protect the name: She-Hulk. Marvel was worried another comic book company might release a She-Hulk character that would create confusion with their existing intellectual property - the Hulk. So, they created She-Hulk and Spider-woman. It’s also why DC introduced all the Superboy, Supergirl, Batgirl characters. They were already feuding over DC’s Captain Marvel (who got renamed Shazam) and Marvel’s Wonder Man (who got shelved for years due to conflicts with Wonder Woman).

With She-Hulk, it was to protect the IP, but it was specifically because the Incredible Hulk TV show with Bill Bixby was considering the idea of adding a female hulk character to the show, which Marvel would have no control over or would have to buy back from the show to use in the comics.

I think what's wild is just how upended her life is in just two episodes. From normal to super powered. From public to private employee. To being super successful to barely being able to be employed. From prosecution to defence. From being within the law to kind of being outside it. From her career based on her brain to being based on her physical strength. And at the same time she's being stuck having to live up to her closing argument that started up the show. Bruce shares *some* of that, but not others.
@YugSihtTsuj2 жыл бұрын
A couple of points. 1. Jen throws her boulder farther than Bruce does, but that's because he just casually tossed his. Then she acted like she'd proved something. But honestly, she'd just had this huge spanner dropped into the works of her carefully crafted life, and I think she was trying not to think about how it might completely derail all her plans and ruin everything. Deep down inside, she was probably terrified and unconsciously blaming Bruce. That's why he was willing to brawl with her; she needed to let it out. 2. When John Byrne was writer and artist on She-Hulk, he had her breaking the fourth wall, all the time, long before Deadpool-come-lately existed at all. She used to get dressed in seconds by having a trying-on-oufits montage, teleport to work by stepping across panel borders, and once she even tore a hole in the page in order to lead people to safety across the ads. Deadpool is the one who's copying _her._

It's interesting how, because Jen is at such a different point in her life as She-Hulk, this show took the comic idea of Holden Holliway wanting her *not* to hulk out at work and flipped it. The GLK&H arc in the comics happened at a time when Jen was so comfortable and confident being She-Hulk full time that she was uncomfortable "being just Jen". It was one of my favorite things about the Dan Slott run, so it'll be interesting to see how this show uses the inversion of it, in the context of Jen being completely new to being She-Hulk and having to get used to being big and green, instead of having to get used to not being big and green as she did in the comic. The moment where she de-hulks and instantly gets drunk and falls on the floor is straight out of the comic, except it was Holliway who asked her to while offering her the job, as she had already been fired (due to saving the world as an Avenger during recess, which similarly led to a mistrial due to assumed jury bias).

Bruce is in an okay place now, but it's taken him 15 years to get there. Jen was already "there." Bruce's rage-issues with being a Hulk weren't Hulk issues, they were Bruce issues. According to his official backstory in the comics, he was abused as a child and had repressed anger and had always had a rage-based disassociative identity disorder that he'd been repressing his entire life, until becoming the Hulk brought it out. What he thought were "Hulk" issues were just "Bruce" issues, which has to be a big wake-up call to him. She's what happens when an already psychologically healthy person gets the Hulk power. As we see in this episode, Emil Blonsky has his own issues, and deals with them differently as well. Yeah, he's a jerk who's definitely lying about a few key details (if we review the Incredible Hulk movie), and the kind of person who thinks that a meaningful expression of your feelings can be expressed in mere haikus, but that's still not as fucked up as Bruce was. Which is kind of his point. He isn't a great (or even very good) guy, but he does have a point there.

Random world-building thought about wall-breaking: What if the reason certain MCU characters are able to break the 4th wall is due to reality fracturing in the wake of Loki and Multiverse of Madness? What if Dr Strange figured out that breaking the 4th wall was the only way to save the multiverse, but he was unsuccessful in doing so himself, (things like trying to talk to the audience, but facing the wrong direction)? So Strange assembles a team of 4th wall breakers to help him. Then we could have She-Hulk, Deadpool, Spider-Man, and others all working together. And, of course most importantly, Howard the Duck. 🦆

The 4th wall breaking in the comics was because they were in fact chronicles of the superhero adventures. @benjaminscott81982 жыл бұрын
Anyone who has an issue with Jen being able to control her transformation and powers has never read a She-Hulk comic. As shown in the first episode, she has more control over her anger, not just because she's a woman, but also a skilled lawyer, who must maintain composure at all times. And she doesn't have a broken psyche like Bruce as you said. Bruce actually has multiple Hulk personalities, each one represents a different aspect of his fractured pysche. We've seen Savage Hulk (the most common) and Professor Hulk. There's also Joe Fix-it, a grey skinned Hulk who speaks like a 1950s gangster. He's not as strong as Savage Hulk nor as intelligent as Professor. There's also another Hulk persona called Devil Hulk that even Savage Hulk is weary of. The character of Bruce Banner in the comics is an absolutely fascinating psychological case. Damage Control is first mentioned in Spider-Man Homecoming. They clean up after superpowered fights and invasions. Tony Stark started the company after the Invasion of New York in The Avengers. As I said in a post yesterday, I have a lot of useless comic book trivia locked away in my head skull

People been angry since the moment Bruce was able to control his transformation into the Hulk, and The Hulk was only raging out at bad guys. If you follow their conversations, you'll see that they prefer it when he's little more than a natural disaster ready to happen. Basically, they only want the Hulk that Tony fought with his Hulk Buster back in "Age of Ultron". The Hulk that destroys cities and kills civilians at random. She can’t do Bruce-Hulk’s sonic clap, she has to use several smaller ones just to disorient him. Yes she was better at the yoga stuff, but from her “deep breaths, hold in your farts” line, it seems she’s already been to yoga classes in her life. She’s actually shown to be much worse than Bruce when it comes to the emotional acceptance part of being a hulk-she’s still cycling through denial, bargaining and anger. This is why The Hulk gets stronger the angrier that he gets, and why Jennifer (who is used to sublimating her anger) is more easily able to control the transformations.

I really like the appearance of the Abomination and am curious to see who his "7 soulmates" are. Is this Contessa Valentina and US Agent trying to spring him to recruit again for the US government (Thunderbolts or Dark Avengers?). Or is it just as it seems? Because if it was Contessa, I'm fairly certain that she would have enough power on her own to free Abomination if she really wanted to. And to add to what I said about Titania in your previous video, the person who endowed her with her augmented powers in the comics was none other than Latveria's ruler, Dr. Doom! Will that origin cross over into this show? I seriously doubt it but it would be very daring if they did.

Hey, Angela! The Abomination break-out places "She-Hulk" in 2024 during "Shang-Chi"! Currently, the MCU is in 2025 in-universe. I'm curious about how they're going to explain Titania as a "super-influencer" because that nonsense is way off the mark! Hulk is probably going to Sakaar to begin setting up his solo World War Hulk movie but they already botched the set-up for that film in "Ragnarok" when they crammed Hulk's greatest epic, "Planet Hulk", into that movie as a throwaway joke! "Planet Hulk" is a tragic epic that sees Hulk go through a Conan-like journey from barbarian to King! "Eternals" and Wolverine references on the website in the show! Second episode was good. You make some excellent points. I think, on the surface, She Hulk can be seen as a Mary Sue. But she has a very different hero's journey than Bruce. She was kind of on a power trip when she got the powers--and who wouldn't be? Whereas a big part of Bruce's struggle with Jennifer is that he finally has someone he can relate to and she's already in a hurry to leave because she doesn't feel she needs him. I think, over the course of the series, Jennifer is going to realize that her "normal" lawyer work-life balance is over. And that she's going to have to roll with the punches and accept the situation she's in.

A superhero rarely ever has issues with their superpowers, it’s dealing with their life changing and navigating around that. I’m glad they’re focusing on that more so than the super powers themselves

@@funnylilgalreacts I would definitely agree with that in terms of the current MCU roster. But Deadpool, X-Men, and Ghost Rider definitely have some built-in drawbacks that I'm hoping we get to see more of when they're integrated back into Marvel proper.

My theory now that we see where it takes place is that Matt Murdoc might be representing Peter Parker since he's out as a superhero. But who knows?

Great analysis of Hulk and She-Hulk. The differences between them really don't have much to do with gender necessarily. I love that they gave Titania her own twitter account.

Anyone who read the comic book knows that Jennifer Walters was mousecake from the word Go. Getting a transfusion of Hulkblood was an empowering experience, but physically transforming was never her issue. It was her psychological addiction to being superstrong, super-confident, and instantly and effortlessly drop-dead gorgeous on demand. She seldom if ever transformed back from She-Hulk to Jennifer because she flat-out didn't *_want_* to. Being She-Hulk was a hellofa lot more *_fun_* than being Jennifer. It took years before the drawbacks started to show up. Turned out She-Hulk really sucked at lawyering, for the same reason warriors don't make good wizards. Strength doesn't lend itself readily to the subtle approach. Warriors tend to gravitate towards simple, direct, linear aggression. ("Do not meddle in the affairs of warriors, for they are thick as a brick and they will beat your punk-ass down.")

So far I thought the series has proven to be entertaining but I think the issue some of the diehard fans of the She-Hulk character are having is that the writers and the director of the show are failing provide the sort of character building that was utilized in the majority of the MCU films like Captain America: Winter Soldier or the first Ironman film which allowed the audience to really appreciate the journey they had to go through in order to become the heroes we would grow to love which is easily accomplished by simply using the source material (i.e. comics) as a guide to replicate a story that has already been written. Instead the creators of the show seem to have used the same playbook as with the character Rey Skywalker and just fast track the main character to just being phenomenally better than any of her predecessors with ease; however, I personally believe the fast pacing that's being used to tell Jennifer's story is entirely attributed to the time constraints of the episodes which on average seem to be under 30 minutes. By the way, @funnylilgalreacts like the Thanos Was Right coffee mug! lol

As the series continued the fandom actually condensed her name to "Shulkie," which is definitely non-derivative.

I don't think you know what "derivative" means. It still has "hulk" right in the middle. It's still blatantly based of his name.

there were a lot of sarcastic familial jabs in her "I'm better than you" banter, and all that tells me is that the men who were upset clearly either a) don't have family like that or b) are just insufferable with no media literacy or humor...because it was obvious they were hinting at the fact that bruce had other issues and trauma making his transition more difficult

In the comics at least, Bruce Banner Hulk has theoretically infinite strength, based upon how angry he is. In Planet Hulk (spoilers) he prevents a world from ripping apart by holding tectonic plates together. She-hulk is strong, but nowhere near as strong as the OG Hulk's full potential. She is crazy strong, like the Thing from Fantastic Four, but the Hulk is a special case.

At first Jennifer I thought she was able to have a conscious immediately after turning into a hulk because of her sex. Similar to x23 and Wolverine in Logan. Which is ironic given that a wolverine ee was in this ep

I know this episode wasn't perfect, But to me, Hulk and She Hulk are cool characters and they have their own set of villains like Hulk has his best villain which is the Abomination because in the comics I see Hulk and Abomination having a badass fight scene, Great reaction Angela, You are fantastic.

I enjoyed your breakdown in the beginning of this. From what I’ve seen, the big issue some men had (not the knuckleheads), was that they seem to present it as she’s a woman and she’s better at it all. They didn’t present her in a way like Black Widow or Yelena where everyone knows they’re bada$$ and loves it but it’s because their skills are incredible plus personality. It sort of dismissed what Bruce had to go through. But you can see Jen has an arc to follow and Bruce already alluded to it when he left her a voicemail and said “I won’t gloat much.” So her losing her job and seeing that this will not be as easy is exactly what he was trying to tell her. I actually got Tony Stark vibes from her in the first episode. Cocky but in time will become a more rounded character.

The only thing she’s better at is controlling her emotions. Literally, that’s it. She didn’t have difficulty being stronger than her human self because that takes absolutely no skill 😂 it’s amazing how some people come to the conclusion she better than Bruce at being a hulk.

What I personally didn't enjoy is that it felt like they had to tear Bruce down to build Jennifer up. People can't deny it's been a BIT of a trend lately. Every assumption Bruce made is wrong, even though he would have had strong assumptions for believing they would be true for her as well. He's wrong about every assumption he makes and she's right about every single one. And despite her criticism, she's equally, if not more so, smug and arrogant about it than he is. It was not an endearing character trait at all. I'll openly admit, I don't LIKE her character very much in the first episode. Bruce is being overbearing in HIS way and she frankly is being an assh*le for her part. It also made it seem that she was incredibly dismissive of what Bruce went through, simply because she was frustrated with him. Capped off with a pretentious and back-handed apology at the end. It just feels like a bit of a lazy modern trope to be honest. I didn't hate it persay, but it left me pretty underwhelmed. And the plot triggers were just lazy as well. The "Hulk Fight" felt contrived. It was there because it needed to be because that's what people wanted to see, not because it felt very genuine in my opinion. And the forced reason in the court room at the end. Just drove me nuts. They made a big point of Bruce looking like an idiot to just assume she needed to be a hero. Even though she could COMPLETELY control her hulk side and hence no one would KNOW and so she wouldn't attract any super villain type attention. And so then it happens her very first case back, what are the chances of a super villain busting into HER court case? Proving Bruce right in the end. I bought that Bruce was being kind of an idiot for assuming that, and then they randomly make it so that he was right. In my opinion it would have been much MORE interesting if a more normal occurrence forced her to go Hulk in the courtroom. Someone pulls a gun past security or something. A normal human incident, that showed her that she now HAD the power to do something to stop it. I would have found that much more interesting than randomly throwing some unknown villain into the mix and expecting us to believe that because she'd SECRETLY turned into She-Hulk and no one knew, that of course her first case gets interrupted by some super. Just felt lazy to me again. But I like your thought that perhaps she has a bit of a Tony Stark arc to her character. Perhaps she redeems herself as she learns more and grows. That could be an interesting journey perhaps. We learn to like her more as she learns and softens her attitude on things. She's young and cocky after all, like Tony was. Time will tell I suppose.

Yes Bruce has been through a lot in his life he was abused as a child when he became Hulk he was hunted by the government and lost everything including the woman he loved then he lost I think three years of his life trapped as the Hulk on sakaar then lost Nat and lost Tony. With all that this man should be absolutely filled with anger and rage but you have to remember Jen control her anger infinitely better than he does because she does it all the time unlike him lol
