It’s a common misconception, Bruce Banner did, indeed, trained under self hypnosis to induce anger whenever required to turn into the Hulk even after he merged both of his halves he could increase his anger via mentally and that’s also why he yelled, so yes, he was most definitely hold him back during the fight.
