Before the digital restoration, the tv print messed up the color transition. The black and white scenes were supposed to have a slight sepia tint so the transition to color would be seamless. The old tv prints had the old scenes in true black and white where the door opening scene in sepia color gave away the trick.
@jonathansmith86723 жыл бұрын
The color transition in which Dorothy opens the door and reveals the colorful land of Oz. This was done on hand. The interior of the house was toned in sepia. The actress who opened the door was actually a stunt-double wearing a sepia-toned dress. As she opened the door and the camera slowly dollied forward, she handed Toto over to Judy Garland, and then Garland would step out into the camera's frame, wearing her color-toned dress. Very impressive, huh? :)

81 years old and this movie is still amazing. In the original books, the story is more like a traditional fantasy story, darker, and a bit more edgy, but still suitable for kids. The events that took place in Oz weren’t a dream, they did actually happen, though her aunt and uncle believed she simply dreamed it (until the later books). She eventually returns to Oz many times.

Back in the early 1960s.....when I was still a little kid...... every year 'The Wizard of Oz' would air on television. But only ONCE a year. It was a very special event. I think it happened sometime around Easter. The early 1960s were the first time most folks could afford to buy color television sets too. Maybe that's why the network decided to start airing it......because it was so colorful. The tradition continued for a long time. I'm not sure when people were able to buy the movie on videotape, so they could own their own copies. Probably sometime in the 1980s. There might still be one surviving cast member......one of the 'little people' who played a munchkin.

The last of the “munchkins” passed away last year actually. I was a 7-8 in the mid-eighties when I discovered The Wizard Of Oz on the yearly telecast. I think they changed it up sometime in the early 90’s when everyone was able to own it on VHS and the beginning of DVD. If you’re interested in a movie that takes lots of inspiration from The Wizard Of Oz, I would highly recommend “Australia” by Baz Laurman if you haven’t seen it yet. It’s truly amazing.

It's so wonderful to see people's first reactions to this film. It still casts its magic spell after all these years! It's especially great on the big screen. If you ever get a chance to see it on the big screen, go! You'll notice so much more in those huge sets. All of it was filmed on MGM's soundstages. Nothing was done outside. They spared no expense. For example, all of those poppies in the poppy field (aside from the backdrop) we all hand-made and hand affixed to the soundstage floor! I, too, grew up in an era when it was only shown on TV once a year. That was a big deal for kids, and probably the biggest event of the "kid year" outside of the holidays. We would anticipate it for weeks and then at school the next day, it's all we talked about. Families would gather around the TV and share the experience together. It was wonderful. Side note: Judy Garland went on to become the queen of the MGM Musical during their golden age (see "Meet Me In St. Louis" or "Easter Parade"). She then became a legendary concert performer among other great accomplishments. She also had a TV series in the early 60s that is wonderful. A great, one of a kind talent for sure!

Judy Garland was known in the 1930s as the little girl with the great big voice. She was 15 when they filmed the Wizard of OZ. Judy only lived to the age of 45. Very sad. Billie Burk, The Good witch of the North was 54 when she landed the part of Glinda the Good Witch. The Movie was filmed in 1937 & 38. Color film was just coming out. The Wizard of Oz was the first production ever to use Colored film. Gone with the wind came out the same year but it was filmed in Black & White and Painted Frame by frame.. The Wizard of Oz is an epoch. Good watching it with you.

You know the funniest part? All of them had what they wanted all along. The Scarecrow wanted some brains, but he was the most clever of the entire group, tricking the trees into throwing their apples at them so Dorothy could eat them and coming up with the scheme to sneak into the Witch's castle by dressing up as her guards. The Tin Woodsman wanted a heart, because he couldn't love without one. Yet his every choice and action were driven by how much he cared about his friends and his empathy for others, heart or no heart. The Cowardly Lion only felt he was cowardly because he was scared of everything. But he never noticed that, for his friends, he was willing to go through danger after danger and face those fears head on... which is the very DEFINITION of courage. He was scared but went to bat for Dorothy and his friends all the same, even if once in a while he needed a bit of encouragement. The Wizard didn't give them any of those things, he gave them reminders that they HAD those things already!

The Tin Woodsman story in the book in more tragic than in the movie. In the book he was a munchkin who fell in love with a girl who lived with a witch. The munchkin wanted to make his fortune to marry the beautiful girl but the witch was determined to stop him. The witch caused the munchkin to suffer various injuries in which he lost his arm, legs, and eventually body. Each time he would get into an injury a tin smith would make a tin replacement. In the end though he did not get a heart and could no longer feel the love he had for the girl he was struggling so hard to get with.

The book was adapted to a stage musical 'extravaganza' in 1902, soon after the book's very successful publication. It had little in common with this film (and, to be honest, with the book), but was very well remembered. Ray Bolger's rubber-limbed portrayal of the Scarecrow was probably inspired by the original Scarecrow, Fred Stone (who was still alive in 1939); and the defeat of the deadly poppies by the good witch bringing snow is an element not in the book, but was the show-stopping finale of the first act of the musical and probably a vivid memory for everyone who had seen it (even critics who hated the stage musical loved the snow scene).

Actually, while that tale was told by the MGM publicity department, who claimed they checked with the Baum family to make sure, they made the whole thing up, out of whole cloth (pardon the pun). Hollywood was extremely adept at lying to get the right type of publicity and to squash the wrong type. All the sleeping around, including with members of the same sex, and things like too much partying was glossed over, even with sham marriages some actors and actresses were forced into.

Frank Morgan, who played Professor Marvel, also played the Doorkeeper, the Cabby, the Guard, and the Wizard himself. The Cabby's 'horse of a different color' was actually several white horses colored with flavored gelatin/Jell-O. The stagehands had to keep the horses separated from each other, because they tended to lick the sweet stuff off each other. I'm so glad you enjoyed this film so much.

In those days before DVDs and downloads, that single yearly presentation - starting on Nov. 3, 1956 - was a day to anticipate, dream about, count down to. For weeks in advance, TV commercials heralded the arrival of Dorothy, The Scarecrow, The Tin Man, The Cowardly Lion. On the big day itself - usually a Sunday night - all plans had to end abruptly at sundown, as we hurried home to prepare for The Big Event.

Such a treat to enjoy this with you for your first time seeing . You are definitely correct, this is so much a stage production that has been filmed. The special effects were state of the art for the time, and incredible that it is done with stagecraft on a set. The tornado is particularly fascinating to me, that it had to be physically created on a stage, and has such incredible realism and character. Still more impressive to me than any cgi tornado i have seen in other films. There is something special about this, the actors, the dialogue, the skill of the production, etc... that touches somewhere on a deep psychological level.

Fun facts about the production: Judy Garland was indeed young. But as she grew up with Hollywood, she drugged herself so much she had a depressing adulthood. She died in 1969. Sadly.... The song somewhere over the rainbow was almost cut from the film. Lucky it stayed and it became a american national treasure. For the tornado, they made it with a 35-foot-long muslin stocking that they wrapped around chicken wire to give it a conical appearance. With dust and smoke blown all over the place. Also, Margaret Hamilton, the wicked witch, was burned in 3rd degree on her face and hand when she teleported in munchkins land. Buddy ebsen was almost the tin man but almost died because he was allergic to the makeup, poisoned with aluminum in it. The snow in the poppy field was asbestos. The lion costume was made with real lion fur. They almost wanted leon the lion from the MGM studios logo to play the lion but it would be so damn dangerous to have a actual lion on set. The scarecrow's mask scarred his face for a year The witch's makeup was toxic so it was hard to come off The wicked witch had a stunt double for one scene because she never wanted to deal with fire again. Her stunt was named Betty danko for one scene where she writes "surrender dorothy" on the sky with smoke while flying on her broom. But the smoking pipe she was in exploded and danko was injured. But she recovered. One piano wire used to make flying monkeys fly broke off and one monkey actor fell down and injured himself One actor of the witch's guards accidentally stepped on Terry (toto the dog)'s paw, breaking it by accident. Behr lart's lion costume made dorothy's actress Judy Garland laugh non-stop. So the director Victor Fleming took her aside and slapped her so she can focus. But he apologized later and she forgave him and she kissed his nose. Everyone in the movie in kansad has counterparts in oz Auntie em: obviously Glinda the good witch. Hunk: the scarecrow Hickory: the tin man Zeke: the lion (he saved dorothy from the pig pen) Miss gulch (the bike lady): obviously the wicked witch of the west Professor marvel: the wizard Terry (Toto actress, yup she was a female and she had a male role.) Was the most well paid in the whole cast. Margaret Hamilton was the nicest on set according to Judy Garland. So it was hard for her to act threatening towards her. Dorothy was almost blonde when Richard Thorpe was originally the movie producer, but it later became victor Fleming, who made it more like the movie we know today, but he left because he had to directs the movie Gone with the wind.

@@malcolmdrake6137 Yes she you are right ((in a way) that Judy did become addicted from a very early age. This movie came out over 70 years ago. All the songs and choreography was written for the movie. I doubt very seriously that there's some big production of it playing anywhere live.
@oliverbrownlow56153 жыл бұрын
There have been numerous live productions of it over the years (of varying quality), including one featuring Mickey Rooney as the Wizard, and many featuring Margaret Hamilton re-creating her role as the Witch.

Yes on the live theater background . Judy Garland and her sisters made a name in Vaudeville before she got into, movies ( their real last name was Gooch). Judy’s incredible voice, sounding so mature for her age, as well as her wonderful acting, made her a huge star at a young age. But she was horribly exploited by the movie industry, fed amphetamines to keep her working, forced into terrible diets when she get a little heavier as a teenager. She was a huge talent but led a rather tragic life.

1. If you start playing side one of the album "Dark Side of the Moon" by Pink Floyd when the MGM lion roars it syncs up with what's happening in the movie until the color kicks in. 2. Buddy Ebsen was supposed to play the tin man but he was allergic to the dust they used on his face, so since he was under contract with MGM they offered him "The Beverly Hillbillies" and the rest is history. 3. Sadly Judy Garland died in 1969 from barbiturate overdose. 3. In the 1980s they made The Wiz. Featuring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson among others.

@MagicViking: Duh! "She can sing."? ALL the people who had to sing a song in the movie were ACTUAL TRAINED SINGERS. None of that autotune crap ( autotune was not developed until 1997, anyway. ) Judy Garland ( who played "Dorothy" ) had come up through vaudeville*. So she was already a trained singer-dancer. Garland went on to do many movies [ including other movie musicals, such as: 'Meet Me in St. Louis' ( 1944, ) and the classic, 1954 remake of 'A Star is Born' ( originally done in 1937, re- remade in 1976, then in 2018. ) ] Tragically Judy Garland died of a drug overdose in 1969, at age 47 ( often attributed to movie studio abuse - back then they controlled the stars' lives - they said Garland was too fat and made her take pills to lose weight; which led to her drug dependancy; which, unfortunately, became a lifetime thing with her. ) Yes, this movie is also a musical [ besides being a children's movie / fantasy / comedy / ( with some dramatic moments. ) ] Because - besides being based on the classic, published-in-1900, children's book "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" by extremely brilliant children's book author L. ( Lyman ) Frank Baum ( born - 1856, died - 1919; ) the movie also had roots in musical theater. There had already been a musical theater adaptation of "The Wizard of Oz," ( 1902, ) produced by Baum himself. *see: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vaudeville .

6:00 Aunt Em saying to Miss Gulch that her faith prohibits her from telling her exactly what she thinks about her has more effect. Now Miss Gulch will be fuming about what Aunt Em was tempted to say about her, every time Miss Gulch sees Aunt Em. It's an inspired line. 11:14 Always thought the Munchkins were pretty ungrateful to Dorothy, just sending her and her little dog too, down the yellow brick road all alone. They HAD soldiers there, couldn't they have sent some of them with her to the Emerald City? But, then, we wouldn't have the story as it is.

The formula that Homer and the Scarecrow spurt out is actually supposed to reference the Pythagorean Theorem. :)
@johnnehrich9601 Жыл бұрын
@@jonathansmith8672 Yes, but the actual theorem uses the square, not the square root. The easiest one is a right triangle with one side 3 units (squared = 9) and the other 4 (squared =16) and the diagonal - the hypotenuse, 5 (squared = 25).

The original Oz books by L. Frank Baum are very different from the movie. They are much weirder and darker. There was a GREAT sequel called Return to Oz from 1984 which is based on the next two books in the series. It's not a musical, it's a dark fantasy like The Neverending Story, and is much closer to the original books. I recommend it highly.
@johnnehrich9601 Жыл бұрын
Literally the first book I ever read was the third book in the series, Ozma of Oz. I love how Return to Oz is so close to this third book and the second, The Land of Oz. (Also, this was a Disney film who purchased the rights to all the Oz books except the first, which MGM owned, so it was fascinating how they worked around the beloved movie where it was a dream and the books themselves, where it was a real place.)

For shame! What kind of an upbringing did you have where you NEVER saw The Wizard of Oz, for crying out loud??!!! Sheesh! But seriously, probably the greatest family movie of all time. Hard to believe that they were originally going to cut "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" because the studio felt that it unnecessarily slowed the movie down and added too much time. But the director fought for it and it stayed. Good thing, too, because more than once it has been voted the greatest movie song of all time. I wish I could go back in time and be in that first showing when the movie goes from black and white to color and listen to their stunned gasps...

@@magicviking8844 The Wizard of Oz is a true classic. I love Return to Oz (1985) also but it's not as well known even though it is a Disney film. When Return to Oz was released, many movie critics felt it was too scary and dark for children so that might have kept some families from going to see it in theaters. It has become something of a cult classic since. Return to Oz is not a musical and is more of a sequel to the first book of the Oz series from 1900 rather than the movie of 1939 (except Disney paid MGM for permission to use the ruby slippers from the film instead of the silver ones of the book).The actress playing Dorothy in Return to Oz was only 11, while Judy Garland was 16 at the time of filming The Wizard of Oz.

@@tltatt I love Return to Oz because it is probably the most faithful to the books themselves, being a composite of the next two in the series, Land of Oz and Ozma of Oz. The characters are direct copies of the pictures in the original books.
