SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS! MARY POPPINS MOVIE REACTION! Today I'll be watching a film I have never seen before Mary Poppins with Julie Andrews released in 1964 for the first time. Here's my Disney Mary Poppins reaction. Want to watch the ENTIRE Movie with me? Check out: / timotheereacts
When Jane (Karen Dotrice) and Michael (Matthew Garber), the children of the wealthy and uptight Banks family, are faced with the prospect of a new nanny, they are pleasantly surprised by the arrival of the magical Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews). Embarking on a series of fantastical adventures with Mary and her Cockney performer friend, Bert (Dick Van Dyke), the siblings try to pass on some of their nanny's sunny attitude to their preoccupied parents (David Tomlinson, Glynis Johns).

Oh, boy. I just have to tell you how Julie Andrews got the role. So, when Disney first got the idea to do this film and started casting, she was on Broadway doing My Fair Lady and Camelot. He came backstage to talk to her, and asked if she'd be interested in flying out to Hollywood to give the movie a look, see if she was interested. Her response? "Mr. Disney, I'm so sorry to tell you this, but I'm pregnant." His response? "That's okay. We'll wait."

Not only that, but Julie Andrews was married to Tony Walton, who would become the film's set/costume designer and visual consultant after Walt Disney asked Walton, "What do you do, young man" and became fascinated by his portfolio.

I agree! Thoses songs are entertaining, charming AND have good messages. I can't say the same for the ones in the remake. Except the first one '' Can you imagine that? '' and '' The cover is not the book! '' in the nightmare world, none of them are memorable or fun. Also the moral of the movie is too simple: '' Family is good! Its well thought that Poppins looked after Bert when he was young, which would explain why he knows so much about her but there also could be some sort of love story there, be it romantic or a bond that goes beyond love. ‘Feed the birds’ is one of my favourite Disney songs. Just a message saying a little kindness and generosity goes a long way. I always guessed that George wasn’t a terrible father. He clearly wanted to support his wife and children but he must have worked so hard all his life that he forgot to let himself enjoy it too. Mary Poppins is there to help him as much as the children. To use a Nanny McPhee theme here, when Poppins first arrived she was needed but not wanted, but once the children reconnected with their father she was wanted but not needed. When it’s the latter, Mary’s work is done and she goes.

Hey buddy - everybody thinks the movie is about Mary Poppins, but it's really about George Banks and his realization that he needs to spend more time with his kids. Mary and bert are merely the vessels that help him get to this realization.

The very first to mix live action and animation was "The Enchanted Drawing" (1900) and Walt Disney has been doing these since the 1920s in his Alice Comedies like "Alice Solves the Puzzle" (1925) which first introduced Pete. Katie Nanna was played by Elsa Lanchester who had played both Mary Shelley and the Monster's Bride in The Bride of Frankenstein.

Dick Van Dyke's performance as Bert is also very good and he and Julie Andrews were one of the best screen teams in movie history. He and Julie Andrews are still good friends to this day. Dick Van Dyke is mostly known now for being in the "Night Of The Museum" film series starring Ben Stiller. You definitely should watch "Mary Poppins Returns" from 2018 with Emily Blunt playing the title role. Dick Van Dyke even has a small cameo in that film as well. This remake has some of the same mixing of live action and animation that the original "Mary Poppins" did. It's a fun movie and Emily Blunt does a good job in the lead role. For old time movies "Bedknobs And Broomsticks" from 1971 starring Angela Lansbury is an enjoyable film and old Disney films from the 1960's such as "The Parent Trap" and "That Darn Cat" both starring Hayley Mills and "The Love Bug" are enjoyable viewing as well and highly recommended for your movie channel. Good reaction!!

Even Karen Dotrice, who played Jane Banks in the original, makes a small cameo in the second film; Julie Andrews was offered a cameo as well but she turned it down as she didn’t want to draw attention away from Emily Blunt. There are quite a few recognizable faces in the newer movie though (including one just mentioned in the previous comment) 😊 and Dick Van Dyke’s cameo is epic imo, all I can say 😉

This is set four years prior to WWI. You should check out “Saving Mr Banks” it’s about the making of this with the author and what Disney had to do to make it happen. There wasn’t a sequel done until recently cause the author hated what Disney did to the story. The sequel is pretty good especially cause Emily Blunt read the books and played the character like the book. 20:50 the boy was afraid of heights and someone offered him a dime everytime he had to shoot the scene. 23:30 Walt Disney wanted this actress to play the bird lady and had a limo pick her up from the Hollywood Retirement Home for her one day shoot. 23:54 that’s Dick Van Dyke. Walt Disney saw him do this during a screening messing around and so he asked them to build that step so that he could do it in the movie. 26:52 it’s the end of the day and she lives in their house.

the choreography and talent necessary for the chimney sweep dance still astounds me to this day (also the song slaps). Van Dyke did a reprisal of it not too long ago and he still has that kick in his step. honestly one of the best and most memorable moments in the film.

The bird that sings with Mary Poppins and the umbrella were actually both animatronics. Julie Andrews was hired for the role of Mary Poppins because she could whistle so beautifully. In the movie Mary Poppins Returns (2018), Dick Van Dyke returns as an elderly banker playing Mr. Dawes, Jr., but this time he really is elderly and sings and dances in his 90s.

You know Tim, there’s actually a film about Walt Disney trying to convince PL Travers (the author of the Mary Poppins books) to adapt her books for film. It’s more dramatic than this one obviously, if you’re interested it’s called “Saving Mr. Banks”

Little piece of trivia I learned only within the past few years: Turns out John Williams (maybe subconsciously?) used the melody of "A Spoon Full of Sugar" for the melody of Darth Vader's theme from Star Wars. Naturally, the version in Star Wars is much more dramatic, but try singing the words along with it... it really works!!

FUN FACTS: - Dick Van Dyke not only plays Bert, but he also plays the elder Mr. Dawes Sr., the one who died laughing at the end. - David Tomlinson not only plays Mr. Banks, but he also voices Mary Poppins' bird umbrella in the end. - "Mary Poppins" is actually based on a book series written by P.L. Travelers. Walt Disney wanted to make it into a movie when his daughter, who was a huge fan of the book version, came up to her father and persuaded him to make the books into a movie. It took 20 years for Walt Disney to persuade P.L. Travelers into giving him the right to make her books into a movie. You've GOT to check out the movie "Saving Mr. Banks" (2003), with Tom Hanks playing Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as P.L. Travelers, which tells the true story of Travelers working as a consultant on the movie. - "Feed the Birds" is Walt Disney's favorite song. - While shooting the "I Love to Laugh" sequence, the kid who played Michael, Matthew Garber, actually had a phobia of heights and was scared to shoot the scene while hanging on wires a couple of feet off the ground. But the filmmakers managed to persuade him by paying him some money for every take he did hanging on those wires. Matthew Garber sadly passed away on June 13, 1977 from pancreatitis that he contracted from eating raw meat during a 1976 India trip. He was only 21 years old. - In case you didn't get the "Wooden Leg Named Smith" joke, here's how it goes: One person says "I know a man with a wooden leg named Smith". What the person meant is "I know a man named Smith, who has a wooden leg", but this is often misinterpreted as 'Smith' being the name of the leg, not the man. So the punchline is that the other person gets confused and replies "If he has a leg named Smith, then what's the name of his other leg?" 😄😆🤣😂

Not sure how true this one is, but: Allegedly the original ending was just him walking into the fog. No explanation of where he was going. That's why the imagery is so beautiful. But then they got the idea to change it so he has a real change of heart and fixes the kite.
