The 200 fly was certainly the most impressive this year. Nice coverage on that event in particular David! I'm Canadian and am already stunned with Summer's incredible performances to date. Certainly a generational talent. I hope people will allow her to continue her carrier, while avoiding sky high time predictions. Let this 18 year old be a regular human.

I always temper my expectations when it comes to the trajectories of these young phenoms. At the 2016 Olympics, at just 16, Penny Oleksiak won gold in the 100 free, silver in the 100 fly, and had 2 bronze relay medals. She never really capitalized on that momentum, settling for just a bronze in the 200 free in Tokyo; in Paris, she was only a relay swimmer (yes, I know she got injured in 2022). Missy Franklin was also incredible at 16 and 17 years old, but had to retire by the age of 21 due to loss of form and shoulder issues. There are countless other examples. Granted, McIntosh seems to have a higher ceiling than Oleksiak, having already asserted her dominance in the IMs. But it's very possible that we've already seen her lifetime bests in 2023-24. For example, she hasn't touched her 3:56.0 from 2023 despite having had a chance to swim it in Fukuoka and Paris.

It all comes down to the question whether there's room for improvement or not, and I think Summer McIntosh still got chances of improvement. I would have agreed with you if this was only about 100s, but you forgot to consider that the longer the course the higher the chances of improvement, whereas it's much harder to defend a title at 100s. And regarding world records, you can't expect someone to break records at every competition. Well, time will tell whether Summer McIntosh has the ability or not in the next few years.

Paris was not Summer’s first time under 2:07. Canadian Trials 2023: 2:06.89

Can't believe I'm even saying this, but Summer is the only female swimmer that I can see ever competing for the lofty title of female GOAT. Never would've guessed anyone would be as accomplished as Ledecky, and it's still too early to say if Summer will .... But with her talents and domination of almost ALL swimming strokes, she certainly has the tools to one day snatch the GOAT title away. She was so impressive at the Olympics and I believe she's just getting started.

I predict she will have the 2 fly world record in 2 years and the 200 im next year

I agree. It will also be interesting if Summer chooses to pursue 800 free, just for variety. She will likely improve her WR in 400 IM as well.

The 200 IM will likely be the next world record she beats. The 200 WR is potentially breakable too, but will be much tougher. Her turns still have a lot of room for improvement and she will likely gain more power in the the shorter events as she get older and stronger. i think we will see more experimentation in different events including the backstroke from her over the next Olympics cycle. Will be very interesting to see what events she actually winds up swimming in the 2028 Olympics.
