👀 As a tattoo artist in the dumpiest part of San Bernardino, I see so many people come in trying to get portraits of someone else right on their face. Fathers want their son's or daughters face on their cheek area the most. A majority of the time, they are experiencing grief or mania, and we give them an outrageous price so that they physically can't do it, or we explain why it's not a good spot for portraits until they start reconsidering. If those don't work, we let them know that our "resident portrait guy is out right now" Also no ethical tattoo artist would tattoo a pregnant woman. The immune system could be compromised because making a human requires alot of energy from the body. If there an infection with the tattoo, the pregnant woman could get incredibly sick and even lose the child. No good tattoo artist would risk the life of a unborn child.

I’m so glad to hear there are artists like you. In our medical office in NY we remove face tattoos all the time. A lot of times there is mania or other mental health concern. Sometimes there’s also a history of addiction. Unfortunately, the world is full of artists who are willing to take money to do these 😕

i had a friend, fresh out of the psych hospital while still manic, get "PSYCH WARD SLUT" tattooed in huge bold lettering on her neck. i wanted to fight the artist who did that tattoo soooo bad. when someone comes into your shop in a clearly altered state of mind asking for a life-changing tattoo, any legitimate artist has an ethical obligation to say "absolutely not."

I paid a tattoo artist a lot of money to permanently disfigure my arm. The tension in his tattoo gun was off and he knew it. He went too deep and the tattoo got infected during the healing process. I have a lot of scarring as a result and an ugly tattoo. When I spoke to the manager of the shop, he blamed me for lack of "after care" (which was total bs) and then he admitted that the artist f**ked up but "he's young" That was 12 years ago. I've had lazer treatments and micro needling treatments (for the scarring) The tattoo is very faded but still very much "there" He used every color of the rainbow. Some colors are more difficult to remove than others. I've given up on having it completely removed. I want a black out sleeve as a cover up. I'm not sure if that would work because of the scarring. Right now I don't have the money, and I'm wary of tattoo artists in general... so I wear long sleeves all year, even in the brutal Texas summer heat. Edit: Moral of the story: Be careful out there kids. Your body is a work of art. It really needs no "permanent" embellishment. I'm old now, and my perspective has changed.

As an apprentice, something I’ve realized is that sometimes there are situations where no matter what, that client will get the tattoo from SOMEONE. I just can’t help but wonder how many artists she went yo before she found someone who agreed to do yet another portrait or name. I can see an artist feeling pressured to do it in this situation where it’s like “either she gets it from me, or gets an infection from someone’s kitchen.” Again, I just can’t help but wonder if that’s what went through some of the artist’s minds. Ya Ive watached their vlogs, theyre both nuts.. she got the face one immediately after Laura first cheated on her. Back then, everyone agreed that getting a tattoo was permanent (with the option of covering it up with a larger tattoo). Now that it's possible to get them removed, I'm afraid that some people get tattoos without seriously thinking about it. I wish that more people would talk about and show how getting a tattoo removed isn't always possible and when it is, how long and painful it is!

Should artists be ABLE (as in legally allowed) to do such tattooes? Absolutely. That is a different question from whether an artist SHOULD actually do them. It is a dangerous to allow the government to censor what can be tattooed b/c that can be a very slippery slope. However, I would not personally go to artists who behave unethically by doing such tattoes, and would do my best to spread the word about their behavior.

My high school boyfriend got a realism portrait of me months after I dumped him. He got it tattooed at 18(I was 16). Now I'm 24 and he's 26 and his tattoo has affected his relationships in his adult life. I feel like it has made women view me as an active threat when I'm not in his life anymore but these poor girls would see me face everyday. The tattoo is on his forearm and I can't imagine how much worse the consequences would have been if he had it on his FACE. 😮

My brother was a tattoo artist (R.I.P) and he had someone come in to the shop claiming to be Buddhist and wanting a swastika tattoo. He promptly told him NO and to never set foot in their shop again. He then proceeded to inform all his colleagues and even posted online that other artists should turn this guy and anyone else wanting ethically questionable/racially charged tattoos away. Everyone is entitled to do what they want when it comes to their body, but the person they expect to fulfill their requests have a right and sometimes the obligation to say NO!

okay i LOVE tattoos, i have a bunch, and i plan on being basically covered by the end of my life, and i’ve definitely got a lot of manic impulse decision tattoos, but i feel like tattoo artists should only allow reserved appointments with a certain time frame between booking it and actually getting the tattoo so people HAVE to fully think it over and really make sure they 100% want it. that would avoid SO MANY regretted tattoos and bad decisions
