I think people need to truely repent to be forgiven. I’m not saying this in a “Christian or “biblical way" just the way I like to live my life. Be kind and considerate but don’t be so open minded your brain falls out, I don’t believe in a god but I do believe forgiveness needs to be both ways. You can’t take on another’s cruel deeds. If they are not at all sorry for what they did then what are you forgiving? You sound like a nice person. But sensible. People get so “taught"” told” carried away with being “kind” at times they forget to think.

Her biggest mistake was not recognizing just how vacant this man's mind was... absolutely no critical thinking ability. Zero self-awareness or impulse control. Completely incapable of compassion or gratitude. He basically sat in prison for 20 years without making an ounce of progress as a person, just waiting. He was what he was... nothing could be done about that. He was basically an animal. It was entirely up to her, as the human in the relationship, to recognize this but ultimately let her compassion get in the way and paid the price. It's OK not to forgive someone unconditionally. It's OK not to trust someone in the slightest. These things are part of basic survival instinct and don't make you a bad person.
