As someone who used to work with that poly pipe, installing irrigation, I would like to offer a tip. We would always use a propane torch to warm the end of the pipe before installing the fittings, it makes them easier to push in and they'll sit more snugly in the pipe. Just be careful not to heat it too much or it melts! Hose clamp is obviously still advised. :)

In Feb. 1960, at the age of 12, weight of 95 lbs., I was given a shovel and a pick and told by my dad that I needed to dig a ditch, for a water pipe, 130' length, by a shovel's width, by one foot depth, through blue shale from the house to the barn. After 44 days of digging after school and on Saturdays I completed it with an approx. average of 3'/day. It took two months with time off for bad weather and frozen ground. Dad would observe my progress a couple times a week and say "good job son". I would dig an extra foot the next day, lol. For back filling, the ditch was covered by dragging a cross tie timber at an angle with a pickup, thank God! But the job was completed the "hard way" back in the "good old days." I'd start again tomorrow if I could. Life was great!!! Great video, just get your pipe buried for it to have a longer life. I shop at two stores, approx. 60 miles from me and another 75 miles in the opposite direction that have nearly anything, including old tools, similar to your store. Just great "old time stores", love to visit them! ....13

Hi Cody, either up your frame rate from 24fps or slow down your pans. A limitation of 24p video is the stutter or blur you get when panning quickly. The degree of blur is dependent on how wide the focal length is and how fast the pan is. IF you shoot at 30 or 60fps, this is a non issue. Just a little shooting tip.

Cody, my brother does landscaping, there is an attachment to his stihl weeder that is designed for cutting a 2inch wide strip in the ground for running irrigation pipe easily.. he uses it all the time and it will cut 10ft in just a minute or two, deep enough to run that pipe....

If you have several projects that would require a Bobcat, just rent the trencher with whatever other attachments and get everything done at once. Even better is to get some neighbors that need some of the same type work done and go in together and rent everything. Then everyone can pitch in an help one another and save money also.

I put a single bottom plow on my 8N and ran a trench to lay the conduit for my workshop and barn electrical service. It was only a foot down but I wasn't worried about freezing. For the water lines I rented a Ditch Witch. It's a giant chain bucket elevator that can go down three feet and trench as fast as you can walk behind it.

a little trick from a european plumper! when you use the 'pex sax' (the cutter you have) twist it around the pipe while you cut it. it will give a more even cut. :) (and sorry for bad english!)

Not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but when you're using cutters like your Rigid cutters, give your pipe or cutters a twist while cutting for an easier faster cut. Also, when you need to unroll poly pipe (Ie pex, gas poly) in a roll, it rolls out a heck of a lot easier when it's warm. Love your videos, truly an inspiration. Keep up the great work.

Cody, I believe the large brass piece you showed was a flash arrester. You put it on top of a vent pipe that might have flammable vapors coming out of them. It allows venting from coming back through your vent and in to your tank....or I'm wrong and I have no idea what it was...

Hi Wranglerstar! I built a ram pump using your videos except replaced both brass swing check valves with the plastic ones and it does not work. The vertical check valve must be the "swing" style since it requires gravity to pull that swing back down after the water hammers. The spring loaded check valve does not work the same with gravity. I tried it, and had to replace the vertical check valve back to a brass swing valve one.

Being a licenced plumber that ridged pipe cutter is for a pipe called pex pipe which has a warranty of 30 years but can not be used outside in the sunlight. I use it to do re-pipes in people's houses. When you start to cut with it rotate the cutter around the pipe a little bit to get it started into the pipe then cut it. Goes a lot easier that way. And the T wrench he has is for tightening up stainless clamps on No hub clamps or mission couplings. It will make a strip noise and slip once it gets up to 65 pounds of torque. I love the videos, it makes us wish we lived out away from the mess we live in. Happy Plumbing.

The check valve is most likely fine. Your check valve is a swing check it's not rated for a vertical orientation, only a horizontal orientation.

I really love the ram pump stuff, Cody. I'd be very curious as to how a pvc check valve would hold up, or an inline brass one, like the one you looked at in the store. They have a spring that holds them open at a force of 2psi, so maybe the pump would reach a higher pressure in the pressure chamber before closing it, therefore sending the water farther/faster to the water tower.

Cody, about buring your pipes for your wife's irrigation system. We used to but the plow with some weight behind the tractor and just using one blade would dig one simple trench. We would have the piping redeady as the plow made the cut to slip the pip under the soil. THen just allow the soil to close back ontop of the pipe and voila!

Hi Cody, one way to get your water line under ground might be to borrow a neighbor's tractor with a plow and scraper blade. You could cut a furrow with the plow, lay the line in the furrow, and then use the scraper blade set at an angle to roll the dirt back into the trench. It wouldn't get it below the frost line, but it would get it out of harms way from the mower.

I was thinking a single ripper tooth might work. Maybe with one of the mesh strain reliefs for overhead power cords hooked around the tooth and literally drag the line below ground. Might just work for relatively short, shallow runs.

On the Ram pump...the check valve is installed in the wrong orientation. These "swing checks" are designed to be used horizontally only. You actually looked at the "spring check" you needed when you were digging around at the used parts store. A spring check will work in the vertical orientation.

That resell store at 2:45? That's what my Dad's (a general contractor for 45 years) garage and outbuildings looked like. When he died we tried to get contractors and tradesmen to come out and take a look but no one could be bothered. He specialized in building swimming pools and he had NOS pumps and filters from the 1960s that are unobtainium now. In the end, yes, you guessed it, we had a scrap metal guy haul it all away, we had no other choice. Lots of cheap/free stuff out there for those who care to make a bit of effort.

Cody, as a plumber I can say that some of those check valves are rebuild-able and if its a good valve are a lot cheaper to rebuild the seat and disk than to replace the whole valve. You are right though, in my experience the bigger check valves last longer

If you want to run water or electrical you can attach the piping or conduit to the bottom of a tractor sub-soiler, this digs a trench, runs conduit /pipe and buries it in one motion.

Hi Cody just watched your video. We don't have Internet at our new house yet so I have to wait a few days between watching your videos. I have a couple of thoughts on the tiny Ram pump. Adding the PVC valve for the waste valve doesn't work because of that spring inside. I wish it would because you are right that would be a longer-lasting valve. One thing I have noticed is that using the larger Drive pipe to feed a smaller pump often time results in quicker wear and tear. also using the same size Drive pipe as pump produces more water output and higher lift because the pressure wave is not having to counteract a larger volume of water going back up hill. I know you already have that very nice steel pipe from your water source and it's very convenient to just hook the tiny pump up to it. my first thought would be to travel from the pump up the pipe about 15 feet and add a standpipe and from that stand pipe come out with half inch pipe. If you would rather try the 3/4" pump just let me know. :)

A little bit of heat from a torch on the end of your black pipe will make it so much easier to insert your connector. When it cools around the connector it shrinks too it and makes a better seal when you tighten the clamp. Heat also helps in taking your connections apart.

Hey Cody, pro tip. When cutting pipe with the tubing cutters. Give a twist to the pipe or cutters when starting the cut. It keeps from smashing the pipe and is a lot easier to cut.

we laid several hundred feet of 1" and 3/4" PVC in a few hours...we used a sub-sodder. Glue a cap to the end of the pipe, tie a few timber hitches on the pipe to the bottom of the sub-sodder, then drag it down...then dig up the locations where you want to make connections...make sure you don't have any other utils in the way first...best to run it through a few times to make sure all roots are out the way first.

I still maintain that 1/4 inch ID Agricultural tubing should be sufficient for the amount of water that pump would be pumping out. It would take a lot less time to fill and the pump wouldn't have to push against as much water in the hose up hill from it. If my googlefu is correct (which it might not be) 100 feet of 1/2 inch ID tubing would have 8 1/2 pounds of water in it, where a 1/4 inch ID tube of the same length would only have a little over two pounds of water in it for the pump to be pushing against.

Just my two cents but before you replace that check valve I might try adjusting that second valve you have throttled down. You have more back pressure on the pump now with the rest of the line hooked up and it lifting all the way to the top of the tower. Might need to open it up a little as a result. It kinda sounded like it was short cycling a little bit like when you dont have that valve open. But I'm no expert on ram pumps and I did hear the hissing too so it might be worn out already. It does seem like the smaller pump cycles more times per minute which makes sense it would wear faster.

rent or borrow a compact tractor with a 3 point ripper attachment with the irrigation pipe laying attachment on it. look on youtube for what i mean. be allot easier and faster than a backhoe and you do not use the irrigation system in the winter anyway so you do not have to worry about getting more than a foot deep or so. just blow the pipe out every fall after you put the garden to bed with compressed air.

I would opt for a rental trench machine for that line over a backhoe, way too much disturbed soil and you only need a thin line dug to bury it, backhoes are really good for other project to be sure.

He's already got a ripping tool on the back of his tractor. He might be able to do it with that but may have to make more than one pass, and a bit of jury rigging to get it to go deeper. Maybe there's a blade that will cut deeper. The other thing to remember is to watch out for any utilities especially when near the building(s).

The pinch style clamps work much better on the poly tubing. They are cheaper too. You need the tool to pinch them, but it doesn't cost much either. If you're setting up a whole pipe system, it will pay for itself by using the cheaper clamps. The same clamps are also great for repairing garden hoses, they don't have the extra end that sticks out and cuts your hand when you tighten the fitting. Looks more professional too.

A PVC check valve won't work as the vertical check valve on the ram pump as PVC check valves use a spring to close and that valve has to fall open by gravity.

This video also briefly highlights a trend that developed about 15 years ago -- the "boutique-ization" of junk and thrift shops. I remember a time going to Salvation Army and no-name thrift/antique shops bursting with stuff that was stacked high and sold cheap to just keep it moving. You have a tractor with a three point so you can weld up a single harrow for it with multiple tools. If I want a wide trench I use the wide one if I wan a narrow one I select the narrow one. A good tractor shop should have a variety of cultivator tips for you to choose from and as long as you use certain size square steel tubing you can make up different "tips" that install just like a reciever hitch but vertical. Or you could simply weld something up out of C hannel like a neighbor did 60 years ago for his 8N. He could V an ditch three feet deep in one pass.

Craigslist Portland shows plenty to choose from from antiques to new. You know your acerage and you know what snow you get so you should know witch 2WD, 4WD or tracked will work best on your property. From what I have seen of your place I would want a backhoe on it. Maybe putting up a list of your needs in a video to your subscribers would help as having more eyes looking to get more choices should hope. No none of my three are for sale as I still use mine. I make quick work of the cabin lot getting it to Firewise specs because my JD MC with hoe is there and I have welded up brush rakes for fron and back.

If you just want to cover the pipe in the dirt, a single bottom plow will make enough ditch to cover the pipe a few inches. in a big hurry. You could even make a feeder arrangement to pull the pipe in behind the plow and a drag to pull the soil into the ditch.

When I lived on the farm and where I live now they used that black pipe. The pipe on the farm was buried 4 feet in the ground, and it was a pain when it started springing leaks. I replace the black pipe here. I wouldn't suggest anyone to use it for water lines. Maybe you could cut it up and use it to herd cattle. :)

Top tip, if your finding it hard to fit a pipe on a connector, put the pipe in boiling water before, then you can easily slide it on the connector, because the plastic is more flexible.

Cody: next time you work with Black Irrigation Pipe use a Propane Torch for a few seconds to heat up the end of the pipe. It slides on to the grey fittings much easier and goes all the way on with out a hitch. That's the way the Pro's do it.

That floor jack at the start of the video is use for the edge of the wall where you can't fit you stapler, you can pry the planks together so you can toenail the tongue board. Price wasn't too bad, probably 65% off brand new.

Get some white nylon insert couplers if you ever plan to bury waterlines or brass or SS fittings plus get a self lighting propane torch for your plastic pipe. An inline check with a rubber poppet will serve you better. There are many PSI poly pipe ratings out there 160# is what you want to bury an rock your pipe cutter will help you a bunch when cutting.

You would have gone nuts in the original "McLendons" hardware (Renton, Wa). It was started in 1926 and it had everything (until fire in 1981) but still exists, bigger and better. I believe they had an expression that "If it's not here, you didn't need it". Oh... before I forget, again. You should put items back where you found them.

I know the PVC ram pump must be considerably lighter than the old cast-iron unit that you had, but how does it compare in efficiency and durability? Could you change out the mouse pad for a neoprene sheet and get it working? BTW I am so happy that I live nowhere near that supply store. I bet you could build a trencher with a small engine, scrap metal, and makeshift digging head. Design it to attach to your trailer hitch receiver and trench in an air conditioned truck! If you have a receiver on both the front and rear, put the trencher on the front and build a hose reel with guide for the rear.

My family and I love HeartRacer. It's kind of funny; I usually don't like "little dogs" (rat dogs, I call 'em), but HR is cool. ------ Man, I wish there was store like that near where I live. ------ I have a ratcheting pipe cutter. Works on PVC up to 1-1/4. ---- They make PVC flapper check valves (aka swing check valves) , not just spring-loaded ones. The flapper is made of rubber with a PVC weight in the middle. It acts as the hinge and the seal. I used to get them at Home Depot, but I don't think they carry them anymore. I suspect they require less pressure to open, so you might consider trying them out.
