Hi Trent, That video had nice content. I have always liked the older cowl design, but it wasn't quite centered in the cowl. Maybe he can try moving his battery aft if he hasn't done so already? I hate the idea of adding weight if it can be avoided. The wider gear is definitely a good idea. The ground loop monster just loves narrow gear lol. The aviation community just keeps getting more advanced with powerful motors and great electronics. I just wish Rotax would bring back the 503 for the light sport aircraft. Take care, Be safe.

The RX1 engine that he mentioned is the one that is based off of the R1 engine. The apex engine I think was based of that architecture, but was lightened up a bit and of course had fuel injection.

VGs on the window probably make sense, or at least won't hurt In the situation where the wings aren't stalled because of the VGs, the top of the fuselage would be, creating a pocket of high-pressure turbulent air pushing the laminar flow of the wings outward. There would also be an outwashing vortex on either side. But then again who knows what the propwash does to the area and how big any effect would be after all. Anyway, talking about aerodynamics without testing is fun but pointless.

Could you build a kit kitfox with a Kubota diesel?
@gregwatruba4541 Жыл бұрын
Sure, if you want to plow a field instead of flying. Diesel engines are too heavy.
@TheOwenMajor Жыл бұрын
To elaborate a bit on what Greg said, the reason why piston diesel engines are difficult to make work is because diesel needs high compression to ignite. This means the engines need to be beefy. And just for reference, a 110HP Kubota engine weighs about 700 lbs.

Instead of just adding ballast in the tail, why not transfer the fuel tank to the tail? Would save weight and allow for increased breaking during short landing events as having the tank lower would help move the fulcrum point rearward and reduce the tipping point lower.
@PistonAvatarGuy Жыл бұрын
Because the fuel tank isn't always full.
@tedcarl5382 Жыл бұрын
20 pounds in the tail is a considerable moment arm. Adding a secondary tank would cause balance to change considerably as it draws down. Plus, AV Gas is right about 7lbs/gallon so it would only increase range by little more than a quarter hour of flight, given their 5.5GPH burn.
@markcleveland3790 Жыл бұрын
@@PistonAvatarGuy true but isn’t reducing weight of fuel and the tank from forward of CG accounted for to offset the extended weight forward of CG by moving it rearward?
