Offshore Patrol Vessel HMS Severn has been officially recommissioned into the Royal Navy. 🛳️
She was decommissioned in 2017 but was seen as too valuable an asset to let go.
The official recommissioning ceremony took place in London over the bank holiday weekend.

So this ship was commissioned in early 2000 then taken out of service without a midlife refit 5 years ago. And now with little upgrade has been brought back into service because BritEx has left gaps in boarder patrol. Wouldn’t it have been cheaper to just lease a new ship from private market if it only going to be used for a few years - without upgrade the ship will struggle to be available for sea.
@paulc9588
@paulc9588 3 жыл бұрын
She commissioned in late 2003 not early 2000 so not even 18 years old. 3 years in reserve so has only been in service for ~15 years. It makes more sense to run this ship for a few years than take an expensive lease on a one-off non-standard (for the RN) ship which inevitably leads to complications when in service. Better to keep the original class of 3 intact. They are simple, robust ships with common systems and in good condition. Very cheap to run and maintain so ideal for the basic OPV role.

In a relative sense, the RN can barely stand up to _India_ today without American help. It hasn't even got a proper fleet carrier, let alone a supercarrier, and _Queen Elizabeth's_ air wing currently consists of USMC F-35Bs while the FAA tries to remember how to fly. The RN is in sorry shape, and with the economy on fire across the West, that's unlikely to change anytime soon.

Great, and armament fine for patrol boats if she was staying local, but considering she will be patrolling the south china sea, just a 30mm deck cannon 2 miniguns and two machine guns!! Hows it going to deal with any incoming aircraft or missile threats? A Gatling gun system called a Phalanx would be good (Sprays the target area or incoming missiles/aircraft with up to 75 rounds per second with 20mm shells) The single shot 30mm is really only good for vessels and little else. But I suspect cost had something to do with it. Bet the captain and crew feel vulnerable.

Well it's not patrolling a warzone, there are plenty of other ships that can temporarily take over the OPV's duties should threat levels get more tense, as well as allied nations like the Malaysian and Singaporean navies, but for fly the flag patrols one isn't particularly worried about hostile aircraft.

@@Jan-dn6jo that's the thing though, if China were to actually attack a Royal Navy vessel and start a conflict it makes sense to attack a high strategic value target like one of the carriers, a destroyer or perhaps a frigate, that's a lot of risk for not much gain from attacking such a small patrol vessel without much offensive armament. If we were at war it'd be a different matter but China at the moment is relying on their active defence strategy, which is forcing the hand of neighbouring countries into taking the first action, they're more likely to continue trying to coax Vietnamese boats into an incident or Indian boarder troops into an engagement than they are to actually do more than send very strongly worded protests over the radio at a British boat passing through.

This is a tacit admission by the RN and MOD that Royal Navy hull numbers are much too low. Severn will help for a few years with low threat environments such as anti-piracy and fisheries patrols, and that's better than nothing. But a significant expansion of the RN is crucial to UK defense going forward. We'll see if the politicians have the spine for it.

We already built five new batch 2 river class, the original plan was to decommission the three batch 1 OPVs and the modified batch 1 HMS Clyde with the new 5, so that's a net gain of 1 to the OPV fleet, however these multiple year long plans got changed last minute and it was decided to recommission HMS Severn and and not go ahead with decommissioning HMS Tyne or Mersey. HMS Clyde has been replaced by HMS Forth and as Clyde had seen more intensive use in the Falklands it was judged that it be sold, the Royal Bahrain Navy now has it commisioned as Al-Zubara. It's not really about "afford", we're already building the Type 26 frigates now, and have plans for the Type 31 and Type 32 frigates as well, designing a new patrol boat or adding on another batch 2 river class order would take more time and be added to the long schedule of vessels to be built in British shipyards and this vessel is only 18 years old, doing a bit of remedial work and recommissioning her is the most practical and fastest way to get another hull in the fleet.

@@jameshubble9652 They send these gals out too, the HMS tamar is going to the SCS region which is much more dangerous. HMS Trent was in the ME in 2020, just as some current examples. I dont deny they are generally used for the channel or other fishing areas, but they do get sent abroad and IMO need a VLS for their size. /watch?v=VdMEClq_M5I&t=12s&ab_channel=NavyLookout

@@dynamo1796 And you will struggle to maintain operations of a full carrier task group, hence it's a big deal when a tiddly rented OPV gets recommissioned. The point is the diminution of what was once the greatest enterprise on earth reflecting the decline of Britain and the self-indulgence of its people. I'm sorry if honest insight is troubling to you.

Fingers crossed, sticking plaster solution to an escalating problem. There will be more conflict with our EU neighbours as fish stocks are further depleted and the third world is beating a wider path to our shores. Are we really the biggest soft touch in Europe ? We have the highest population density and a declining standard of living someone please tell the horde waiting on the French shore we are NOT the land of milk and honey.
