That is an awesome sounding Les Paul. Covers a lot of tonal range….and that sustain is fab. I wouldn’t change anything else on your axe. Thanks for sharing. Cheers.

I've definitely seen improvement with graph tech nut and graphite saddles and ratio tuners. I was thinking of adding a Graph Tech Tusq nut to my blue D'Angelico Premier. I put graph tech ratio tuners on my Epiphone LP Special and a graph tech wraparound bridge. It sounds fantastic. The Ration Tuners are the best in the world. Your Les Paul Standard sounds very, very nice. Frets look perfect. Well done.

I'm considering getting something similar done to my Studio, but am bit worried that I may not like it, any chance I could meet you somewhere if you're gigging around London so I could feel your guitar/frets myself before deciding? Cheers, and keep on rocking!🤘

Totally agree with you on setting up the action a little higher. Low action seems like the answer intuitively to promote speed, but I’ve found gripping strings during bending much harder when my guitars have been set up that way; my playing becomes sloppy and suffers across the board. I also think a little higher action allows the strings to resonate and sustain better.

Hey man, love the refret! I've wanted to ditch the vintage frets on my LP for a set of jumbos too - for much the same reasons as your own actually. If it's fine me asking, how much did the refret cost you? and did you find issues with in the way of intonation as the fret width and heights were so radically different to the original Gibson wire? Thanks a bunch! -Nige

I got a stainless refret on my 90s Studio that is a really great sounding guitar for some reason, so I never traded up to a more blinged out model. I was daft though. I forgot to tell him I wanted jumbo frets, so ended up with little Gibson size ones. Expensive mistake. I have an angle grinder vibrato, so new nickel frets are flat on top in only a few months. Stainless is the way to go. I use those Primo Slinky 9.5-44 strings for a Les Paul in standard tuning. They feel just right to me, because 9s feel too light and 10s too heavy. Same 9.5 gauge for my Strat in Eb tuning, so the tension feels similar. Nice big frets on this one. Dimarzio HS3 and HS4 pups for the YJM thing, but sometimes I think about making it into a Dave Murray Strat. Super Distortion. Mexican Standard. Great neck and fret work that really surprised me how good it was. Bridge and tuners are not as good though. I might replace them. I recently got one of those Original Series SG Standards. The little frets suck for bending. The neck took weeks to settle down, so I had the truss rod cover off full time and was constantly adjusting. Neck pup is stronger than the bridge pup. I do not like it? I nearly returned it, but now it has settled down and begun to get toneful I love it. It will need a refret in the new year. It's my fav guitar now. Apart from the little frets making bending a bit trickier, it is so comfy to play and sounds great. SGs feel weird after years on a Les Paul, but once you get used to them they are really fun guitars (it is a little brighter and snappier though). I top wrap my Gibson guitars. I do not care what folks say. I like the better clearance over the arse end of the bridge etc (sometimes you actually have to do it depending on the neck set angle). My Two Notes Captor can not cope with my Plexi replica. It overheats and shuts down, which gives me about 20 seconds to turn the amp off. I put a Marshall 2525H on lay-buy. Debt free GAS, but it requires patience. Silver Jube will be good for the more metal stuff I do. Great with a TS808. I will have to install power scaling on the Plexi to tame it. I do not like driving load boxes that hard. It makes me nervous of smoke billowing out. I will not mod it for more gain and tighter low end though. I want it to do the authentic Plexi thing for Led Zep etc (being able to do both would be cool though). Touch and go if I will have the amp paid off within the 3 months though. I had to spend 2K at the dentist. Moved to NZ while my NHS braces were being made, so I missed out (during my O level year). I miss England sometimes, although I am very glad we do not have a village idiot in charge here. It's good here except for all the rugby heads, i.e., ugg ball is what I call it. I am an old school MUFC supporter (since 1970s). I noticed some Judas Priest in there. They have so many great riffs. The first few albums are absolute classics.

What amp and where are your tone and volume knobs set at? It sounds like the bass is compressed and not punchy and bridge pickup also with attenuated highs and upper mids softened. Is that the resomax doing that? It’s very hard to judge what’s going on here otherwise.

It seems like ages since you sent your Les Paul away - no wonder you were missing it. It sounds great - but I reckon most of that has to do with who is playing it. In my hands you'd probably say I got it from Woolworth's 😊 and definitely yes to doing a cover with Gabs 👍

Best thing you can do to a modern Les Paul is change the bridge to a steel ABR-1 and change the tail piece to cast aluminium with longer steel studs.I have been through loads of pickups and OX4 are the best reasonably priced pickups i have found.
@SpedSpedding
@SpedSpedding 5 жыл бұрын
My Les Paul is a 98 Standard, think she's sneaking into vintage territory now. Haha. I have just had a look at the ABR-1, looks cool. Have you tried the Graphtech stuff? Also, yeah the OX4 pickups sound amazing. My friend Ben who works at Gibson is demo'd them ridiculously well on KZbin. I will see what I can do! Have you tried the Bare Knuckle stuff?
@bobdillon1138
@bobdillon1138 5 жыл бұрын
@@SpedSpedding No haven't tried any Graphtech stuff but it has a good rep... i found the Faber Abr-1 to be the closest to a vintage sounding bridge...Tried a few Bare Knuckle offerings and to me they were nothing amazing i thought Duncan Antiquitys sounded better...It is all very subjective but to my ears the OX4 with the A4 mags come closest to the 50s early 60s Gibsons without spending crazy amounts of $...bymmv.

bob dillon So you didn’t feel that the faber rubberized the bass and mids? I don’t have a proper word for it but especially the neck on two guitars became kind of lifeless with less harmonic content. I messed with the hardware for 3 years and to no avail.

What about adding a String Butler to prevent the strings binding in the nut and help them to return to pitch after bending, Since your already using so many Graphtec parts why not a Graphtec nut? Throw in some big bends nut sauce and bam Ultimate tuning stability and playability unlucked.

Anything that adds mass, adds sustain, which is why having a Bigsby makes guitars sustain better, so even if you don't use them they help, and look cool - no? Having the tailpiece flush against the guitar adds mass, so there's a scientific reason for top-wrapping, assuming you want more sustain. Cheers!
