@jackchorn8 жыл бұрын
Christopher Harrison check out those two libertarian cities proposed in Honduras. They were opposed by the last democratically elected president- and a lawyer who was fighting the building of the cities was assassinated at a wedding in a church. 50 something jounalists have been killed since the last coup- 4 of the 6 generals were trained at the school of Americas in Georgia. US supported the coup- or at least is keeping up with the Right wing latin American policy. The funny thing is that this was called the domino theory- the fight to keep the USSR from our backyard. But now what is the excuse? We must be honest and admit it is a war being conducted by to prevent a philosophy- its a war of capitalism v socialism. Ironically capitalists always holler about the free market- yet they won't allow the free market of the people to choose their own philosophy. I find it interesting people call the Democrats Left- while the last Democrat congress voted again to spend our tax $ to overthrow the democracy of Venezuela. Certainly this is not Left- and certainly Obama and Clinton are following the Right wing foreign policy. Why are they so afraid to allow a socialist government in Latin America? They are so afraid it will work.

*The Guardian: "The School of Latin American Dictators" (November 19, 2010):* *When the elected president of Honduras, Manuel Zelaya, was dragged from his bed and flown out of the country in his pyjamas last year, it was no surprise to find that this classic coup was led by a graduate of the School of Americas, the notorious army training school in Fort Benning, Georgia. But General Vasquez was simply following a well-trodden path for autocrats in Honduras - after all, two of the country's most hated past dictators, Juan Melgar Castro and Policarpo Paz Garcia, had also attended the school.* More than 60,000 Latin American soldiers have been trained at the School of the Americas - among them, the some of the region's most notorious human rights abusers, such as Salvadoran death-squad leader Roberto D'Aubuisson. *In all, 11 dictators have attended its courses: men such as Argentine junta leader, Leopoldo Galtieri, infamously responsible for the "disappeared" and Guatemala's Efraín Ríos Montt, whose scorched earth campaign against indigenous villages, was classified as "genocide" by a UN-sponsored commission.* Founded in the Panama Canal Zone in 1948, it was originally named the Army Caribbean School. It was renamed the School of Americas in 1963, and a new curriculum was introduced, offering courses in counter-insurgency, military intelligence and psychological warfare. The school was moved to Fort Benning in 1984 and, in 2001, in an attempt to improve its image, its name was changed again to the Western Hemisphere Institute for Cooperation (WHINSEC). www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/cifamerica/2010/nov/18/us-military-usa

@Syncopator8 жыл бұрын
As much as I dislike Clinton, this story is poorly presented, and important contextual information is missing. And I've also seen it claimed that, "Zeleya tried to circumvent congress and change the constitution to eliminate his term limits. He was essentially trying to become a dictator with the help of Chavez. This act, according to their constitution, immediately strips one of their citizenship. Congress voted, and the supreme court approved the removal of Zelaya. At congress' request, the Military leaders removed Zelaya. A temporary president was put in, until elections could take place. The current president was elected into office via election of the people." And Juan Gonzales' interview with Clinton on the issue makes it look like Hillary pushed to NOT declare it a coup because it would withdraw US aid from the people of Honduras which would not be helpful to the situation. I personally don't know enough about the situation to be able to assess the validity of any of these claims, and Dana Frank's rampage against Clinton seems to be a bit too emotionally charged, or maybe she's just nervous about being on TV-- but it makes it hard to make sense out of any of this, and look like a quick and dirty hit piece. So if there's a story here, it may be a fascinating one, but I couldn't tell you what it is from any of this.
@francefiliault26298 жыл бұрын
It was illegal, the president never had a day in court and Hillary tried to push for another election trying to push things under the rug.
@Syncopator8 жыл бұрын
+France Filiault I guess this gives it a little more context, but I'm still trying to sort it out with some help from here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2009_Honduran_constitutional_crisis So Zelaya didn't want to leave, which was deemed illegal by the supreme court, a coup by the military removed Zelaya, and then the coup itself was deemed illegal because of the way he was deported, something the military did apparently to avoid violence. Clinton stuck our nose in to try to sort it out, avoiding calling it a coup in order to preserve US aid, and a bunch of other stuff happened-- a shady election? An interim government? Human rights violations? A big mess it would seem. But it's not clear to me exactly what was wrong if anything, with what Clinton did. Simply not call it a coup in order to keep US aid from being withdrawn? If that's the extent of it, the rationale seems reasonable, even if it's skating US law somewhat, the reasoning seems not malicious or self-serving or even particularly incompetent. I mean, it appears it was a complex situation and laws that don't take into account extenuating circumstances may not have been serving us well there. And was Obama on board with it? And it seems like an election could be a way to sort such a mess out, so that in itself doesn't seem to be the issue-- or was it something about how the election was implemented? The problem was the election was rammed through too hurriedly in an attempt to stabilize things more quickly?
