Surprisingly, first actual performance from Kathleen on KZbin. Her slightly earthy voice is ideally suited to this kind of music.

@Tphilpott1 Scots IS a Germanic language/dialect of English (depending on your viewpoint) spoken in the Lowlands. When referring to Gàidhlig in English speaking contexts, we say Gaelic [Gaa-lik], or 'the Gaelic'. Under no circumstances would you refer to Gàidhlig as Scots. It would be entirely incorrect.

Dialect of English? Hud yer tounge min. Scots was influenced from Remnants of Gaelic , Pictish , European merchants and traders just as much as from England. This theory about Scots being a dialect of English has been forced upon us for far too long. Its lazy , incorrect and offensive.

This is one of several "waulking" songs to grace the Highland Sessions. These are generally call and response songs used as a rhythmic co-ordination which groups of women would sing as they pounded the tweed cloth using their feed and hands against a "waulking board". This finishing process was applied to cloth soaked in stale urine and water.

@bookkeeper57 It's waulking (òrain luaidh) not walking (siubhal), and you really ought not to refer to something of Gàidhlig origin as "Scots," as Scots is a completely unrelated Germanic language.

I love the comments on this song...I preformed it recently and the intro went something like this.. "This is a song that has become the topic of some debate recently on KZbin. The orgins of the language and the "waulking-ness" of the song have been discussed in length. THANK GOD FOR KZbin" and then we busted out into a rendition...So thank you all!

Quite, but the Scots Leid (aka the Lallans or the Doric in the east) is not a dialect or patois of Old English. It is a separate line of development from the Germanic language of the Angles -but not the Saxons- with elements of the earlier Cymric languages (P-Celtic, ancestral to modern Welsh) formerly spoken in what is now Scotland, as well as Norse and later many French additions. It IS basically Germanic. Gàidhlig is Q-Celtic and NOT Germanic. TWO LANGUAGES, not to be confused.

@bookkeeper57 Scottish Gaelic (Gàidhlig) is the Celtic language spoken in Scotland. Scots branched off Old English (a Germanic language) before French influenced it. So, yes, Scots is a Germanic language. However, both Celtic and Germanic languages are Indo-European languages, so they're not unrelated.

Scots (the leid or Lang for you borders folk out there) is truly a derivative of Norwegian, and though Norsk and Deutche are Teutonic languages this does not mean or imply that Scots is a Germanic dialect. The closest linguistic relative to Gaelic is (believe it or not) Hindi (via Sanskrit). if you go back far enough you will find that Sanskrit, Pali, and Goidelc (ancient Gaelic) are all dialects of each other...Slainte! Shanti! Skuld!

Don't know what it is about Scots Gaelic. But it makes for a lovely extension of Irish Gaelic in ways that embellish and enlarge it. There seems to be a flourish in the inflection that sweetens our common language somehow.

I know what a hammered dulcimer is, and yes, they are used very commonly in Celtic music, although not nearly enough ;) It's just that it looks like one... Perhaps it's a koto played like a dulcimer? Kind of like people will often play a bodhran like some other drum, or are hammered dulcimers made this big? I would think not, but I've been wrong before....
@JosephChordmichael
@JosephChordmichael 16 жыл бұрын
Yes, I know you were talking about the language, and I know that it's Gaelic, Scots or Irish I'm not sure. I was talking about the large hammered string instrument being played at the beginning of the clip, and have been the whole time. I said I thought it was a koto in response to "Alexmcgruer3"'s comment saying it was a hammered dulcimer. I could be wrong about what it is, though... Perhaps a Japanese musician, or ITM musician living in Japan could confirm what this instrument is?

+Trump2016 a song that is sung while a group of people (historically women) waulk fabric. To waulk is to felt. The fabric would be wetted with water or sometimes urine and repeated agitated to make the fibres open up and join together. To keep a group in time they would sing these types of songs.
@Lupegarrou
@Lupegarrou 8 жыл бұрын
The fabric would be on a long wooden table rolled like a long sausage and a line of women would roll and beat it it in unison, hence the rhythm of the song, the 'felting' would make it waterproof ;)

great lilty song ,but this "performance" of what is a working song (waulking) doesn't do justice to it. the singers could ad least bunch together and sing together i don't what Liam is at there at the back he looks a bit lost. and as for the twiddley diddley whistle ,it doesnt add any thing to the song ,the fiddlle is ok, any way it is over caereographed and over produced ,but still it is difficult to kill what i a truly great style of singing , i still will listen to this but i'd love to hear a real version of it.
