Yup. There was another video where an old girl was cornered, and just dropped on her belly with a frightened tail wagging, and then started licking/rolling onto her back next to them. I got a notification on nextdoor this week, some woman is giving away her basset for free because she and her husband are getting a divorce and neither of them want their dog anymore. How f*cked up is that? I'm about to deleted nextdoor because those are the only notificaitons i get anymore, people abandoning their animals when they become inconvenient or people finding stray cats that no one ever claims. It takes every ounce of me not to flip out on these people and tell them how sociopathic they are.

A liquor store where my parents went when I was smaller had two german shepherds. One of them always tried to gently bite my arm so I couldn't stop petting her. (in Germany, so you can take your kids with you when going shopping) The dog never tried to hurt me, it wasn't stronger than holding hands or keeping a toddler on the sidewalk. Except when you tried to pull your arm away too fast, then it was more like her bringing a puppy back to the others

If you think about that it's not really about you but just huge separation anxiety and the dog wouldn't care who there is as long as it's anybody, the fact that you feel great about that instead of seeing how sad that actually is for a dog to feel that much stress on a daily basis, I don't know. If you feel good about being "needed" to such an extent, you should look into yourself. It's not fair for the dog either to be your "feel good toy". Toxic relationship and stuff, you know. I went to the Oregon Humane Society to try to do this after my service dog passed away while I was healing and looking for a new dog to train to take his spot, but I was refused. Did you know, the Oregon Humane Society will not allow people with disabilities to go in and sit with the animals? How do they expect animals to react well to things like wheelchairs if they are never exposed to them?? The disabled community has an endless amount of time to fill, and by refusing to allow volunteers with disabilities to go sit with dogs, cats, and small animals, the Oregon Humane Society is doing everyone involved a disservice. It's a real shame. I've trained 2 of my service dogs and would be an awesome asset to help socializing the animals, basic training, and introducing them to accessibility equipment, but nope. It's horrible and criminal and discriminatory.

That’s very unfortunate, because you must be a great asset to the shelter. But I believe all animal shelters require volunteers to start from administrative level like a greeters, then advance to the positions that allow animal contacts, just like Rocky always explains in his videos. Once they recognize what you have experienced they would promote to the upper level work. However, most shelters require some physical qualifications that the person on the wheelchair may not be able to fulfill. And I’m not sure if the kennel has enough space for the wheelchair to go in and to quickly escape in case the animals get aggressive, which is possible. But you’re right, there should be a way for the dogs to get used to the wheelchairs. I don’t have any ideas yet, but maybe when you come up with some, you can offer them to the shelter staff again? They might be able to start a new volunteer program. Good luck!

I firmly believe that it's the pheromones we give off. Different feelings produce different pheromones. They can literally smell fear, anger, joy, love, etc. We keep forgetting just how good their sense of smell is. For that reason alone, if nothing else, if your dog doesn't like someone, take it as a HUGE red flag

My father used to train shepherds in the service I know a lot about them. I used to hang off a dog's ear when I was 2 years old that could rip me apart in 2 seconds. They are highly intelligent animals and should be treated as such. You're doing a beautiful job. 🐶

I don't know that anyone goes into adoption thinking they will eventually abandon the animal but for those that do it's almost certainly always because they were never shown how to care for a pet by their parents. Generally just one person can help people who do these things simply by example and encouragement. My parents let me adopt/buy animals without any kind of intervention and the animals were unfortunately not in the best way. Luckily my huband patiently taught me the fault in my ways and I know better now. I am sad that my pets (Guinea Pigs fish etc) didn't have their best life 😢 I will never make that mistake again..

I think some people have it and others do not. I was not allowed to have pets as a child & I KNOW my parents would not have been good teachers. They would simply have viewed a pet as a pet. I view my pets as my children & family I am an animal person through and through and have rescued many...I currently am a parent to 5 strays that lived outside & now have a home with me. I adore them. I am glad that I was not taught by my parents 🤯 They definitely wouldn't have been the right people to "teach" anyone when they aren't even "animal" people Of course, there is always room to learn and learn and learn, but I choose to trust myself and use my fingertips and get the combined knowledge of many & most importantly... let the animals guide me & learn from THEM. They will tell us what they need in their body language & eyes. And we are allowed to teach them what we need as well. We teach them and they teach us everyday & one needs to be open to "adapting" and LEARNING all of the time

What melts is both hearts , mans best friend makes those friendships , some people just don’t get a chance to share that place .A buddy that will not abandon you. Those who have fear feel that abandoned hurt , they lost their pack . It’s those people who have past away who have lost their fight for life and leave that companion that needs a group to help out , giving them a home to restore that connection of a forever home .

Oh my god. This short got me crying. That puppy looks like a twin to my little girl. I hope someone who needs a best friend adopts this girl. She'd make a great Service Dog with her seeming need to please and cuddling. PTSD or Anxiety, she'd understand and be all about the needs of the handler.

Mine almost was. They said she was dog aggressive and too energetic. She was just a puppy and had been attacked by another dog, and was rehomed three times, abandoned to the streets once, and moved from shelter to shelter twice. I’ve had her for a year and she just celebrated her second “birthday”

Kennels must be so scary to these pups. They don't understand why they got ripped from their home. Thank you for loving them despite their stress. Rescues are the BEST!! they deserve all the loves and cuddles!
