I’ve never heard Tom explain the use of a tug for behaviour reward in such detail before. It was great to see in action. Seemed to really help the training gel for the dog and owners. I love how Tom explained the chattiness, too. He really respects dogs as individuals and helps owners see that. It must lead to so much more harmony and appreciation. Good work all.

I used to follow Victoria Stillwell and was against the prong and shock collar. She has great advice and has taught me a lot but positive reinforcement did not help my dogs teritorial agression. The e collar and prong in conjunction with pos reinforcement worked great. Every dog is different and requires a different learning method just like humans. E collar is not abuse (unless used incorectly). It has saved my dog and many others. I don't need the e collar 24/7, but I always have it because it makes for a safer redirection tool and distraction.
@JM-jn4il3 жыл бұрын
Love this. I like Victoria. But her belief that prong collars and e-collars are “torture devices” is asinine. The idea that EVERY SINGLE DOG only needs positive reinforcement is baffling.

@@JM-jn4il same thing with kids, if you only use positive reinforcement, the kid will one day walk over you, they need there dads strong strict enforcement.
@hazardmuffin Жыл бұрын
I think that behind the camera and out of the public eye Victoria would probably agree that properly used prongs and ecollars are great tools. What she hates is clueless owners using them as aversive quick fixes who don't put in the work to do proper training. But for TV and her "brand" it's been simplified to "just don't use them, choose positive instead!" But she herself uses negative reinforcement, corrections and even aversive methods of behavior modification, and she has talked on her show about having a ton of respect for people who train K9s and protection dogs, and those dogs are almost always trained on an ecollar/prong.
@daylaholleman95843 жыл бұрын
She really is a good owner and just looking for guidance. I went through exactly what she explains with my now 14-month-old shepherd. I was purely positive because everybody said you had to be or they would turn on you. My dog then killed 5 chickens and I knew it wasn't working. I got an ecollar as well as a simple choke and now he loves the chickens and I trust him with my whole flock by himself. I also have a better bond with him. What I have realized is that dogs communicate mostly through corrections so it is unfair to expect them to understand us communicating with no corrections.
@alxhiding3 жыл бұрын
well said, agree entirely. forgive me for being pedantic but I'd like to do so for those reading this comment in a similar position - the more appropriate phrasing is that dogs (and other organisms) communicate through *pressure* . even purely positive training is a form of pressure. existential feeding, shelter, leadership, praise, controlling toys or desirable objects, restricting freedom, so on and so forth. its all pressure. using higher and/or more precise exercises of pressure (i.e corrections) is as was highlighted in this comment - making it fairer on the dog when we ask them to act out completely unnatural behaviours to help them exist in a human society (functional obedience). I like to think of it as playing a game of hot and cold, and the person you are playing with never tells you when you are getting "cold". it would be *incredibly* frustrating. imagine living your entire life in such a manner. this is the level of non-sense that people think is "healthy" for dogs. not to say it can't work, but that you have to structure the dogs entire life so that it *never NEEDS* to be told it's getting cold. if you can do that, more power to you, but it's unrealistic for most, which is why purely positive training is essentially non-sense.

What a gorgeous GSD! And I love the owners. What amazes me is how much some trainers will charge with little to no results and how long they will have their clients seeing them. Just yesterday I met with a new client and her two dogs. She told me one trainer quoted her over $300/hour and couldn't tell her how long it would take to resolve her problems. I spent 90 minutes with her and her dogs. By the time I left, she had strategies for dealing with all the issues she wanted to resolve. If implementing the strategies I taught her works, no need for any subsequent visits. Another new client saw that putting a prong collar on her mastiff mix changed him from a puller to a good heeler...in less than 10 minutes (and with a loose leash!). My clients want results as quickly as possible. It's entirely possible with balanced training.

One size does not fit all in dog training. The prong, e-collar, gentle leader, easy walker are all tools to use for a time until our furry companion and us can communicate properly. Once communication is established these tools can be phased out and replaced with a flat collar and voice commands. This is what I was taught by a wonderful K9 police dog trainer. Tom’s channel also shows this ever time. It’s all about communication. ❤️

If I were you, I would find a new dog park, or just a park. GSD, while needing socialization, don't really need other people/animals as much as say, a Golden Retriever. You'd think after a while they'd realize it isn't working and try something different.. those groups have some wackos though they'll belittle and berate others for giving corrections/using tools like prongs, can see how someone could be tricked into believing they're a bad person for "punishing" their dogs.

I have a 13 months rottie, we never hired any trainer, we watched a lot of your videos and many others prior to getting him and all throughout his upbringing. He's a great pup, but we've always used both negative and positive reinforcement. He's an extraordinarily strong yet willing to please dog, if we didn't have a way he understood of letting him know what are behavioural no-nos from his side, he'd be a dangerous animal despite of the fact that he has 0 agressivity and is a bundle of joy (a 50kg bundle of joy). I am interested in the stuffed dog you were using. Turtle Mountain Rescue needs something like that for the puppies. Right now they are using their CPR dog...which is super expensive.

Should you use the tug if your dog tends to play bite, act aggressively or resource guard and refuse to give things back?

So can I use a prong collar to train my 8 week old GSD to not bite/nip at us? Does the prong collar stay on him at all times? I want to train him to walk on a leash also without pulling back and just sitting down. How do you know if you should use prong collar or e collar …. This is our first GSD and it’s we want to train him well.

Can I use the prong while using this technique? I was told not to have play time while they are wearing the collar

Talking about finding what rewards are best for dogs…. I’m working with Salukis, where I’m told they do things in their own time…. I have found difficulty with treats because they only work if treats are available. Which if I want to do Rally or anything, treats are not available…. Would you know what might be the best sort of reward system for sight hounds?
@olivias24143 жыл бұрын
Aren’t sight hounds prey driven? Maybe some sort of fluffy tug toy like a sheepskin to mimic prey and play on that instinct. Similar to what he’s doing here with a ball. They’d also probably love a flirt pole with the same sheepskin style toy, but that’s harder to use as a reward. Maybe you could use the flirt pole to build initial drive for the toy, then detach the toy and use it had a handheld tug reward

@@jamie-lynng.6505 Oh yes, don't trust your dog NOT to go after your cats if they be are outside. Beautiful dogs, very old breed, I know of the Saluki from following racing greyhounds. It's a real shame what has happened to Greyhound racing in the US, because of the bad people involved. Greyhound's are poetry in motion, everyone should get a chance to see these dogs run.

What we do, after watching Tom's videos, is have our dog "place" when she does something we don't like - bark at the UPS truck for example. It's been a real stress reliever!

We have a GS/Great Pyrenees female. What if you'd like this behavior when out in public but also would like them to react (at least fierce barking) if anyone even attacks or tries to intrude the home? Do you socialize them less to other people? Ours gets nervous when new people come around but she quickly warms up to them and i wouldn't want that to always be the case. Maybe I'm asking for too much.

This is the same question I've often asked about my gsds. My male has been tramatized and no longer trusts people. Four thousand dollars in training, and he still has the same Issues, however, I also want a dog that will bite if necessary. He is mostly German working, had a very well known grandfather, in shutzhund. But I want him to understand the difference in someone who is a threat, and someone who isn't. Don't know where to go from here..
@mklnelson773 жыл бұрын
That’s not how protection training works. They are highly trained to be turned on and off. That’s not good for the dogs mental health to be reactive.

@@tomdavisofficial good things come to those who wait 😁. Besides, I've gone back three years watching videos. Just doing that helps me with MY response to behavior I desperately need modified. My female GSD and I are working on barriers...doors mostly because she'll run out the door spin around and snag every dog waiting to come out. Soooo, we're back to square one for whatever reason. She's almost 8 she knows this stuff 🥴 So she waited really nice, didn't load when I put my hand on the door knob, everything's good, I'm on top of the world. Opened the door she bolted and snatched me out the door and to my knees I went 😡. On a good note through all that, rolling around with what I thought were busted knee caps, never lost control of my dog, still had a firm grip on that leash 😂🤣😂 This gal is my big money schutzhund world titled lineage five generations...she's an intense girl...8 years ago I was more intense too. This gal keeps me in my toes (and knees lol). We'll work on it again today. I need to lean into her obedience more, it's there, mamma just forgot to ask her to keep her butt in that sitz

Can/should you use prong collar for smaller/medium dogs? (35lbs) Or is the slip lead is better? ( for a people reactive dog)
