THANK YOU for the enormous amount of work you’re putting into this No bad dogs-mission. I’m a journalist in television in Denmark, so I KNOW how many many hours goes behind a video like this. So just wanted you to know how grateful I am for your work 🙏🏻 I have a male Spanish water dog who’s 11 months old, and we both really benefitted from this balanced training. In Denmark the official kennel club excludes any owner who corrects their dog during any training - they only use positive training. So we’ve struggled a lot, because it hasn’t been working. You taught me (in one of your podcast episodes) that this breed (strong working breed, both herding, hunting and guarding) needs a strong leader and a leader with very clear boundaries and rules, and it has revolutionized our world. There’s still a lot of progress ahead, but this balanced approach makes it so much more fun - now it truly feels like training and not like work. Whoops, wanted to keep it short. I could go on for a while. Anyway - thank you, Tom!

In January 2020, I adopted a 2 year old mix transported here from a KY kill shelter…shepherd/doberman. I’ve had many dogs, but never a shepherd, and darn if, just like you said, shepherds have a totally different personality. I couldn’t believe it! You’re videos have been invaluable to me understanding him. Because of your detailed videos he and I are now the very best friends. I can’t thank you enough!!! Bless you!!

I also came via notifications and SO glad. My pup is part shepherd and I believe some of her aggressive behavior comes from the breed. This video reinforced the need for me to be a better leader and I am interested in the “break” command. (I don’t have that). I have already adopted many practices from watching these videos, with success, but it’s the aggressive behavior and snapping (occasionally making contact), growling that I need to address immediately. Here Sprenger collar on the way!

I love watching these videos. My border collie/Aussie doesn’t have behavioral problems (thank whatever god is up there) but they are super informative on everything else too. The information to the owners on how to walk with their dog completely changed our walks and the pulling. Loose leash 90 percent of the time. And we were at my family’s ranch and throughout the entire time there she was off leash and I would keep having her check in. Sure enough she figured out where the cows were in the last 30 minutes on the very last day. I called her once from a quarter mile away and she came all the way back. It was MY reward for hard work and consistency. I even caught it on video which I’m not ashamed to admit I go back and watch from time to time lol. Thanks Tom.

Some people are ok with their dogs barking and being aggressive, but they don't even think WHY the dog does it (sometimes they even LIKE it and whatever). They ever thought that the dog could possibly end biting someone? 😲 (I'm not saying this is the case here, but it made me think anyways). Good job Tom!

I love seeing you working with GSDs. They can be such a challenge at times because people often buy them as protection dogs, but without training to be protection dogs, they become the opposite. I ended up taking in one GSD when his former owner got disgusted with the dog. His idea of protection training was to praise fhe dog when he barked at something... "Good Boy, PROTECT!!" He then was flabbergasted when I called his dog's bluff, and walked right up to the fellow, all the while with him commanding "Protect! Protect!" The dog had a bad sense of security, and cowered when his barking bluff was called. I'd love to be entered in the giveaway, Thanks!

@@Erin_29 yeah, it's nuts. I have a GSD girl who I had to retire from being my public service dog because we had a traumatic experience with someone who tried to rob me at knifepoint. She did not have any bite work training on her, yet she took this guy down like she was trained for it. She somehow knew the knife could hurt, and definitely knew the guy was no good. Bad thing after that, she then saw everyone getting too close to my chair as a threat and would growl. I couldn't take the chance that the next one she thought she needed to protect me from would be a child with a toy. I've been working with her two years and she still wants to eat any stranger that gets near. My big boy GSD is calm, well balanced, and the biggest snuggle bug on earth. 😀

You can correct the dog if they 100% know sit and just aren't paying attention or are deliberately ignoring you. Applying pressure would be for a dog still learning or perhaps in a new environment where you want to give them a reminder. If you only ever go super gentle, even when they're not paying attention, you can end up teaching them to press their luck and try to get away with things because you always give a warning/reminder every time they don't listen (or at least try).

I understand that a dog can become very aggressive. I tried to adopt a male black GSD. But when I took him home I took him in a walk with very little around of dogs or people. Out of nowhere he went after a neighbors dog that was just looking at us. He tried to kill the neighbors dog and he was very strong and very aggressive and scared both me and the neighbor. Inside the house he was an angel but outside he was a total different dog. I did return him and did get another male GSD a little over a month later. Make sure you do socialize your dog at least two to three times a month. Never let your dog get bad with people and other animals. If something happens to you and your pet has to be adopted out it can be very hard if your pet is really aggressive towards people and other animals. I take my new dog out every week.
