Let's also take note of Matt's insane accuracy on where he hits the drums. Look at the snare head. Those stick marks are pretty pinpoint and it's also another reason his drums sound so good. How and where he hits them. Just another level of playing and practicing to appreciate.

You can even go back 7 years to some of the Joy of Motion play-throughs on MEINL or Drumeo channel and you'll see that same accuracy. Obviously he's got monster talent and was born to play the drums, but this dude has been putting in WORK for a loooong time to be where he is now, which is equally inspiring.

To me, I think about martial arts : pocket drummers are great boxers (direct, solid), while Matt is more a capoeira fighter (fluid, dancing). Another thing I thought about when doing time signatures like this (especially many on one songs) and going from simple beats to complex fills and back insistently (not at this level of course) is changing gear in a car. A great driver knows the exact moment when to switch gear so it appears seamless, while most will switch too early out of fear or too late out of over confidence.

This is unbelievable, Matt! Also - I’d love a video on some of your recent drum head experiments. The clear/ coated tops have switched around a lot and I think it would help some people achieve the sound they want - or at least point them in a direction - and potentially save them a few bucks from their own experimentation. The clear top/coated bottom with cotton balls piqued my interest for this video idea.
