Exactly what I was thinking! He's a pedophile harassing a minor. I always give second chances, but not when dealing with children. Should have been fired or relocated to another Walgreens the first time, for sure the second.

I was a manager at CVS, which is the same thing as Walgreens, I had a situation exactly like this. A high school girl started working for the summer. A much older man kept making advancements at her. She came to me and told me what was happening. When I watched the cameras back I saw him inserting himself into her personal space and he would try to put his arm about her or place his hand on the small of her back. I put them on opposite schedules. After about 2 weeks he started complaining that he didn't want to work the particular hours he was scheduled for and I told him he could he couldn't work with certain people anymore. He seemed to understand, but about a month later he would come in for his shift about an hour early or stay later than his scheduled off time, just so he could be around this girl. I contacted HR with the girl present and they said he needed to be transferred to another store. HR came in and we had a meeting with him. HR literally said "you're sexually harassing a minor and you're a liability at this store. You can be transferred or fired, but you aren't staying at this store." He quit and tried to sue cvs for unfair treatment, which no case was ever built. I still talk to the girl from time to time. She has graduated college and started her life in a new state and is getting married soon. In short, that's how Walgreens should've handled that issue!

Couldn't have explained the correct process better than this. I worked in HR for years in the hospitality industry and it's common practice to have an official investigation performed and a meeting regarding ANY complaint of sexual harassment in the workplace. So glad to hear that young girl is excelling so well in her life after her ordeal 🧡

Your so right about employees downplaying their feelings when speaking to their manager about feeling uncomfortable or harassed by a coworker. They fear that they will be looked at negatively, such as too sensitive or a “crybaby”. It’s a very legitimate concern and often complaints fail to be made due to this fear. What’s worse is that those fears are often the case. Managers will often think of the one with the complaint as the problem. Also, the one being complained about is often thought of as a good or great employee. These are just a few examples of why I don’t work anymore….😂

As a mom I completely agree that the babies grow up too fast. My daughters are now 16 & 14 and taller than me and it went by in the blink of an eye. Your new background would be lovely in some kind of darker jewel tone like a deep sapphire blue or plum. This case is absolutely horrific. I'm sure many of us had the misfortune of dealing with a creepy co-worker and it's even worse when you're a minor, and the person harassing you is an adult.

A friend of mine worked for Walmart. A man 15yrs her senior started to make inappropriate comments to her, then started brushing up against her as he would walk by, stroking her arm or lower back. She came in at 3am so when its still dark and he would always make comments about the emptiness of the parking lot, the darkness and how he would watch her walk in. She finally told the Managers because she was worried about him escalating. Their solution was putting him on a 2 week paid leave while they investigated. They then decided after the investigation that there wasn’t enough to fire him even though 4 others complained about his behavior and backed her claims. They put him back on the schedule WITH HER. This case had happened before this incident. Knowing about it, me and others told her to not chance it and don’t go back. She ended up taking that advice, quitting and finding a new job in a different city. She got messages from the other employees saying he wouldnt stop talking about her for weeks after she left. It was scary! Its awful how these companies do so little. He worked there for almost 10 years and thats why they chose to not fire him but in those years my friend wasnt his only target of harassment. It makes no sense. Im glad she is safe but still angered about the lack of action & protection. Its mind boggling.

Sexual harassment/misconduct should have ZERO tolerance in the work place! Josh should have at least have been written up the first time if not suspended! Verbal warnings should only be given out if it was something less serious like if someone was late 2 days in a row for example. Justin should have reported it to a higher up the first time. Josh looks like a creep and he was older than Riley so her first complaint should have been taken more serious. I know Justin is gonna carry guilt with him for the rest of his life probably.

The higher-up saying "hey dude keep it professional" should have said "hey, this is no place for that kind of comment and she's A MINOR." or maybe even threaten with firing him or change their work schedule so it was more difficult for him to get to her, i know he was obsessed and he might have found a way to talk to her even if he was fired but at least a barrier/step could've been put there 😕

I worked at a tiny ice cream store as a young teenager and worked my way up the ranks. My manager was rarely around and i used to open and close the store fairly frequently. Somehow this man in his 40’s ended up working with me often during the evenings and he used to say the most disturbing and inappropriate things to me. I don’t recall if i made a formal complaint to my manager but i know i mentioned it. I forget what his fate was at the store but looking back it’s just weird to me that they allowed this older man to be alone with a teenager for hours at a time in the nighttime. I believe he told me he had a criminal record, as well. I guarantee most women and girls have stories like this. It’s just terrifying. RIP Riley❤ thank you for your hard work Zara!

Unfortunately, a lot of companies (managers whatever) have a hard time having those conversations with people. I personally had a manager tell me that a person sexually harassing me at work that “he doesn’t understand what he’s doing so you’ll just have to learn to ignore it” 🙃 It’s sad that people have to deal with this. And I’m so sorry she lost her life over this disgusting person.

"you can't even work in peace anymore" I just said this the other day... you really can't do anything as a woman, and I feel like it's getting worse as time goes on. it's always hard saying no because you never know how people react to rejection. it is understandable if Riley didn't want to come off as rude. people like that man genuinely believe they own you because they are attracted to you and it's sad. I still can't believe that employees, especially women feel the need to downplay harassment in the workplace. we know we probably won't be taken seriously just like a lot of these cases have proved. I really hope things change. Riley should still be here.

Hi Zara. I was waiting for your video! My 24 year old daughter was recently harassed by a customer at work. She didn’t tell me- my son did. I went right to her work to talk to her. She said management spoke to the customer to leave her alone. Thankfully, she never saw him again I did talk to her about telling me when these things happen. Even tho she’s 24 I told her I would be on that situation if it continued.

A couple of thoughts; I think the first warning was sufficient IF there had never been any other problems. However, even a verbal warning should be recorded in his file, with his signature showing he had been warned and he understood the consequences if the problem continued. And you touched on this but I doubt him being fired would have changed anything. The rage he felt at the end would have come on quicker. Riley did everything right. My prayers go out to her family and friends. She sounds like she was an amazing person.

When I worked daytime at my store, I got stalked and bothered by customers a lot, some tired to give me gifts. Some would stand there and refuse help from another worker, to then ask me to help them instead. I've sense moved to night shift where our doors are closed and I only see customers for 2 hours each shift. It's helped a lot. Even co workers on days did bother me too, constantly asking me out. One tried to kiss me randomly in the middle of me working and he was on break, walked through the store to bug me. I could go on and on, but thats all I'll say. Its better now that I've been on nights and barely see anyone.

When i was 17 i got my 1st job at a horse riding stable (i had been raaised with horses and had horses of my own so i was so excited for this job). My 1st day seemed to be going well until the Manager (who was in his 50's) began commenting on my "sugar cured thighs". Touched my butt and being too close. The other girls at the barn didnt even bat an eyelash, almost as if used to this man, some of the girls were 16. Two other male workers came and got in on the fun. The Manager began drinking on the job and it got worse. He cane up to me and shoved his tongue into my mouth. I was frozen, i couldnt move. I walked away. I was young and scared. I faked that my mom was sick and needed me to come home. I grabbed my lunch bad and began walking through the woods in a direction i know one of my good friends lived. She found me in her car and picked me up. I was crying and she took me home. I told me dad, he called the cops. I was too afraid to take it further. I dropped the charges. Too afraid. Im 26 now and i kick myself all the time for not standing up for myself, for not going to the court date, for not protecting those other girls. I wish i would have been strong then, like i am today. He didn't rape me or anything like that but it is still a horrible memory that I will never ever forget

I worked in retail & restaurant management for many years. This manager screwed up! If it were a simple case of "this guy makes me uncomfortable" then, Ok. Sometimes people (especially young girls) can be overdramatic about things. But it's pretty simple to verify- there are cameras EVERYWHERE! If you can clearly see that this creep is invading her personal space or intentionally being in her work area without reason, you've got your answer. 1 complaint without evidence, I would have told him to keep his distance. Anything beyond that, he's getting an HR report, especially when you're dealing with a MINOR. That is a massive liability. Idk if it would have made a difference in this case. The guy was clearly a psycho! But I would bet that Walgreens managers got some serious re-training after this!

I don't understand the actions, or lack thereof, from the managers. I wonder if the police reviewed all of the cctv footage to be able to track down just how much Joshua was harassing Riley, to see if there's anything on there, and it's also unclear if the managers faced any consequences..

I live in Colorado. Have lived in CS before. My children live there now. At the work place, and employee can't be fired without 3 written reprimand. He should have been written up the first time but a warning isn't unusual. There is nothing Walgreens could have done in this instance. He killed her before he could be written up 3 times. Maybe they shouldn't have been on same shift, but if the company needs the staff on that shift...they will do what ever it takes. Walgreens is a huge national chain. This guy's is FU. Walgreens may have handled badly....but nothing would have stopped this sick fck. No one is to blame but him.....sucks....

you would think that management would be watching him closer now that she had complained and they were both working the same shift but they allowed him time to prepare for his attack at the store while it was still open to customers! They obviously didn't watch out for this vulnerable teen being harassed by an adult perv! I think he should've been fired, that behavior should not be tolerated in a place of employment where you're supposed to act as a professional, what a travesty.

I wonder of that had to do with more action not being taken

I do feel like a verbal warning should be given the first time but should also be documented with the employees signature, then other steps should be taken to prevent the employees from working together if that is what she wanted, because with him already receiving the warning steps should have been put into place to keep them apart and he should have been given a formal warning at this point because he must have done something else to have her ask for a different shift.

I remember going into work and hearing my boss (her godmother) breakdown in scream out.. She left behind a two year old daughter. Her funeral was full of colors because she always loved bright colors.

I worked at walgreens and was sexually harassed by a man who came in daily. My manager refused to ban him from the store because they didnt want to loose his money. Walgreens doesnt care about its employees at all

The manager should've reported him to HR for sexual harassment and either fired him or transferred him. They completely failed as managers.

I really feel like the managers hands were tied on what to do. There’s only so many days in a week and hours in a day.. we can’t create new ones to try and abide by people’s every requests. How were they supposed to know how dangerous he was? I just feel like it wasn’t their fault, there was only so much they could do. They have to schedule around other people’s lives as well.. kids, school, other jobs, etc, how are they supposed to perfectly schedule everyone’s requests without overlapping?

I’ve worked for Walgreens for 3 years, unfortunately it takes that long to watch cameras because the system is finicky

If I had already went to my manager about a coworker Harassing me and nothing was done my parents would have made me quit the job, came up to the store and had a discussion with the manager and my brother and sister would have a "talking" with the co worker. Maybe my family is a little protective and violent.

Coming from a leadership position, I would have made it clear to him that my first warning would be my only and if he continued with his action’s termination would be the next step. I would have also made sure the conversation was documented with HR. When she asked for the separate shifts bc he was still making her uncomfortable, he should have been let go or moved to a different store if that is their policy. I don’t know if the managers didn’t take this situation seriously or possibly just a lack of training regarding sexual harassment but she was ultimately failed by Walgreens in my opinion.

Further action should have been taken. 1. She was being harassed 2. She was a minor HR should have been notified and guy should have been written up. That would have made the seriousness of the situation crystal clear.

As you mention the abolitionment of the death penalty in CO- Food for thought- Idaho just passed a law that if they can’t get the meds for killing someone, they will use the firing squad. (For the death penalty.) 😂😂

ABSOLUTELY MORE SHOULD HAVE BEEN DONE!! Hope Justin was fired. There’s huge policies in the work place for this and legal action for the workplace as well. Especially for a big employer such as Walgreens!!!!

I don't know about Walgreens but I was in mgmnt at Kroger and procedure would be a verbal warning but it would have been written on a form and designated as "verbal". This was signed by the associate and mgmnt and filed. A second offence would have been termination

He looks mentally disturbed. They were probably worried about legal backlash from being harsh on him. But they should hand never kept them scheduled together. I’m saddened for her family. They should have documented his behavior and took it to HR. That way his claims of disability act claims would be dismissed

It was totally up to the manager to take the situation in hand. He should have been stern with Joshua and made sure if he continued with what he was doing, he would be written up, and then one more infraction he would be fired. This isn't the only time I have read about many women who went to their boss to do something about a situation in their work place, and the managers did nothing. Women are not and never will be taken seriously. What a coward Justin is. And the fact that is was Joshua who was making Riley very uncomfortable, he should have had his hours changed. Riley shouldn't have had to do that. So disgusting. And if you deliberately take a life from this earth, your life should be taken from this earth also. And not in 15 years on death row. Rest in Peace Riley. And if I was Riley's mother, I would file a lawsuit against Walgreen's for not keeping their employee safe, and the manager basically doing nothing to help her.

I don't feel like the manager's did enough. Riley did everything she was supposed to as an employee but her managers failed her. Especially because she is legally a child, if an employer is hiring children do they not have additional duty's of care? In Ireland, this would be a child safeguarding issue also and legally there would be issues for failing to protect a child.
