Hi from Guinea (West Africa). This is the single most important oil in our country. We have other types of kernel oils, but nothing beats raw Shea butter. While I was living outside of Africa, I would purchase brand name moisturisers with Shea butter. Since I returned home, I quit doing so. You would too, I am sure, if you could purchase an entire kilogram (or 2.2 lb) of raw Shea butter for just 35.000 guinean national francs (or around 4 USD, current exchange rate). A few uses of raw Shea butter: Cosmetic use -In our country, from birth to toddler age, almost every baby skin is pampered with Shea butter. Then, the mother kinda gets fancy and look for scented moisturisers. -I use Shea butter from the neck below every day, right after the shower. I scoop a small quantity of shea butter from my stock and put it in a small plastic bowl. Then, I put some hot water in another bigger bowl and let my small plastic bowl float in the hot water for a few minutes. The butter melts quickly. Then, I slap it on my body while I am still wet. This way, it glides easily on the skin and it doesn't feel as sticky as it would feel if you used in its solid state. Results= supple and toned skin + really nice compliments on your skin. - Dr Dray is right, it noticeably softens the hands. I wash or wet my hands prior to going to bed and then, I rub Shea butter on them, while wet. - I am oily and acne prone, so I am weary of oil on my face. I have not tried Shea butter on it. But both my mother and grandma do, they have dry skin. You can see the butter's polishing effect on their faces. - I use raw Shea butter on my hair too for manageable hair. Not everyday. I feel as though, my skin absorbs the butter much quicker than my scalp, maybe I simply produce too much scalp sebum . -I don't use Shea butter on my lips. It does work to soften the lips, but I have come to realize that good old Vaseline is #1 there. So I don't bother with Shea butter. - Shea butter really toned down my KP on my elbows and above the kneecap (90% visible improvement). But it simply isn't as effective on my buttocks area (50% visible improvement) - I know women who have used Shea butter during their pregnancy to prevent stretch marks. Yet, some did develop stretch marks anyway, so I cannot attest to the validity of the rationale in this case. Perhaps, frequency of use and other variables are important to observe. Traditional health: -We use Shea butter to massage swollen body parts. -During the Harmattan season, in some parts of Guinea where dry winds can literally harden and crack our feet, Shea butter is the only oil we use to avoid extremely dry skin. -Due to its occlusivity, when someone gets tiny wounds (think for example, when you remove a splinter from one finger), for a couple of days, we smear the Shea butter on the wounded finger prior to showering. We do this to lower the risk of water infiltrating in the skin to cause an infection and to avoid a ridiculously painful finger that the MD would have to incise. If the smell of raw shea butter bothers you, use a small amount of your perfume as you normally would and voila.

Just as a side note, I really appreciate the specificity: "...sub Saharan Africa..." and "...some African populations..." All too often, I hear people use the word "African" in such a broad and vague way, and it's very disrespectful to the fact that it's a continent with different ethnic groups and hell, even geographic diversity. Thank you for always speaking so mindfully.

My lips puffed up once coz of an insect bite and when it subsided I was left with a deep, almost blue scar that looked like an ink stain. For two years the scar didn't reduce in intensity and people pointed all the time to me about having an 'ink stain' on my lips. Then I got some raw shea Butter to apply as a night lip balm because my lips were getting dry. In about 3 months I could see the scar slightly fading and in 6 months it was 70% gone. After about a year the scar was 95% gone. This made me a shea butter fan for ever!

I apply raw shea butter on my face every single night in the winter. My skin is dry and acne prone, Shea butter is one of the few things that doesn't break me out no matter how much I apply ☺. I've been keeping this routine for 2 months now and my pimples shrinked considerably, also my skin is sooo hydrated. It's especially helpful after using a Salicilyc acid facewash. Really, I love Shea butter and I'm happy you're talking about it ☺️

The best way to put shea butter on ur skin is rubbing the amount u need with ur hands and fingers and tap it on ur face or body, tap it all over ur skin, then u just slightly smooth it out. This helps to not rub ur skin so hard with it.

I use and love shea butter. There's a slightly refined version that is a little creamier. If I have the less refined shea butter, I melt it in a double boiler, let it cool a bit, and then whip it using the whisk attachment on my hand mixer. It's extra effort, but it makes a really lovely whipped body butter. Sometimes I'll add just a bit of grapeseed, jojoba, or rosehip oil to help make it a bit more creamy.

I’m an esthetician and I’ve used raw Shea butter on my skin for years. It’s absolutely amazing and it’s totally worth recommending to clients. Not all skincare needs to be professional. It all comes down to your knowledge of ingredients. I would recommend using a water based moisturizer and ending your nighttime routine by pressing it into the skin. I wouldn’t recommend it as a daytime moisturizer because it can be too heavy. I recommend using a double boiler to melt down the butter because it can be grainy.

I started using Shea Butter ( raw Yellow African Ashanti Shea butter) before Covid, changed my eczema forever! The smell is nutty, earthy, when melted is amber yellow, rich , thick, when whipped its much easier to spread on scalp and skin hair. Only problem with shea butter is its very thick to use along with water ( after shampoo and showering) whipped shea butter is better for than since its softer, melts easier and is less thick

So happy you did a Shea Butter video. I healed my cracked heals using this recipe: 1/2 C Shea Butter, 1/4 C coconut oil, 1/4 C almond oil. Melt Shea Butter + coconut oil over low heat. Cool and add almond oil. Put in fridge until almost solid then whip with handheld mixer until body butter consistency. Store in glass jars. Whole Foods recommended the brand “inesscents” organic fair trade African Shea Butter and it is awesome, no clumping, goes on to skin so easy. Hope you try the recipe. Awesome review. Hugs...Sherry

When I use to use raw shea butter I would put some of it in a mason jar and keep it in my bathroom. Before I showered I would use my hairdryer, on high heat, directly through the glass to melt some of it. After my shower I would apply it to my wet skin. When I was doing this I didn't know about TEWL and only applied it like this because it was quick and efficient. I also used this method to apply it to my hair. I loved the way it made my hair feel, but it makes my hair fall out when applied near my scalp and even if I applied to my ends, only, I still experienced hair fall, I think because it made my hair heavy.

Hello Dr Dray. I have been using shea butter for some two years now after becoming prone to skin redness. I am from India and purchased it from Amazon. They tend to be grainy but as we warm it up it emulsifies into a consistency of an oil. However ,they do not tend to be oily on the skin. A big thank you to this video that I got informed that shea butter does not tend to hold up the moisture. I felt that it was certainly helping me but lacking that moisture retention that I presumed then the occlusivity of Shea would help. Also, they help the nails and do a home manicure with them, which is very therapeutic. I had also used around my mouth n nose which is kinda equivalent to your routine with CeraVe healing ointment before adalpalene. Also,I use them as a lip moisturizer and they are good. Now, post seeing this I am gonna try on my hair which I was skeptical to do all these while.

I really love LXMI pure nilotica melt. It’s described as a “balm-to-oil” and it’s only ingredient is shea butter. It’s absolutely saved my skin this winter, I use it on dry patches on my cheeks and on my hands. It does come out of the tube as a balm but very quickly melts into a spreadable oil.

I agree, it's a lovely product. I also like their Creme du Nil; it's expensive, but I only need a little bit to cover my whole face and neck. I tried a tip from their site and first applied the Creme du Nil and wet skin, then then the Niltica melt over at before I went to bed. I used this method on cold nights this past winter and woke up with soft, hydrated skin.

Dr dray and everyone! The now solutions raw Shea butter does have a more grainy texture initially in the top layer. Once you get down more into it and start rubbing it in it emulsifies beautifully like coconut oil would. But trust me you have to get past the first top layer. Hope this helps :)

Thank you, Dr. Dray. I always appreciate your educational videos. I use Shea Butter on my arms to help battle dry itchy arms. Shea Moisture is a brand that is relatively inexpensive-and its already whipped. Now brand is hard but it can be removed and whipped in your kitchen. You can also add a small amount of your favorite body oil or face oil to help soften the Shea enough to whip it.

I use a cocoa shea butter vaseline lotion as a mosquito repellent, I'm extremely affected by traditional mosquito repellents, often requiring an EpiPen to handle. The shea butter lotion works better than ANY natural mosquito repellant. I live in a very heavy mosquito area and it works amazingly. My mosquito bites usually last for months so avoiding them is essential and the shea does it perfectly. I actually got a mosquito bite on my knee 3 years ago and it STILL flares up and itches occasionally (no idea why??? My allergist says you can't be allergic to mosquitoes but my body says otherwise). Anyway thought y'all may like to try it for mosquitos this summer. My whole family uses it now.

So I am trying shea butter since a few months. I have some slight acne on my face (so I have acne but I am still lucky to not have really hurting pimples. I only have many tiny pimples that are red and annoying). Shea butter helped me very much. I dont know whether it is healing my acne long term (bc its getting better now) but it makes my pimples smaller and removes the redness. Also my skin feels very soft. I can only recommend to others to try shea on their acne. ;)

Dima B Hi! I'm glad the oils seem to work for your skin. I do know that oils on their own are not good as a moisturiser. Oils are emollient and you also need humectants to hydrate, and occlusive to seal in that moisture. Emollients soften the outer dead layers of the skin and make it look better and feel softer. Hope this helps :)

I use the Shea terra organic Shea butter that’s unscented, it’s extremely creamy and soft and melts into the skin. I used to use it where I had dry patches like around my nose and mouth. One day I ran out of moisturizer so I used it all over my face and my skin seems to tolerate it well. I usually wear it under my sunscreen.

I use the cervae because it contains ceramides that help protect the skin barrier and the shea butter because its nice and heavy. I find that this combination works really well for me.

L’Occitane has one that is easy to work with. Its 39 dollars for the big tub, but in my opinion it’s worth it for all the use I give it, how long of a shelf life it has (~2 years) and how much it lasts me. They also have a small tub for ~12 dollars so you can try out the product if you’re not committed to buying the big one. I use it as a lip balm, a moisturizer after shaving and for my elbows and hands. You can also apply a little bit on a burn or scratch to act as a barrier and give it a little slip so it doesn’t hurt too much were you to brush against a surface. The reason I use it as lip balm is because chapstick or beeswax based lip balm break me out, but Shea butter does not. Other than that, you can use it at the tips of your hair to disguise split ends and moisturize your hair a bit. It’s definitely one of my holy grail products and one I use on the daily, and I recommend giving it a chance. 💕

Hi Dr Dray! It would be really helpful if you would do a video, or just give some advise on what is best to use topically to get rid of fungal nail infections. There seem to be a lot of products claiming to treat this problem, but very few of them seem to work and they're all quite pricey. I do realise that this problem requires consistent daily treatment over quite some time until the new uninfected nail grows to completely replaces the old infected one. Thank you and Happy Tuesday! :)

I bought Shea Butter because I read that it didn’t clog pores and had all the wonderful properties that Dr. Dray mentioned. I used it on my body, and it helped moisture my skin. I also used it on my face and broke out in acne all over! I went so long without having acne and the moment I moisturized with shea butter, I broke out so bad. I had a huge pimple in the middle of my forehead that took forever to go away. I learned the hard way that heavy moisturizers don’t do well on my face. I highly recommend people to do a test spot first before applying to the face

La Roche-Posay Lipikar Baume also has shea butter as its second ingredient (after water). In fact, if I'm not mistaken the whole Lipikar moisturizer family is pretty much formulated on shea butter. Worth looking into it, because the large ones might be significantly cheaper than CeraVe in e.g. Europe, and also more accessible. For example in my country I can't find any of the thicker CeraVe Healing/Renewing products, for some reason.
