Prequel to "Shea: From Nuts to Butter"
Video made for broadcast on ORTM, Mali's national TV station, to teach Malian women about improved shea nut processing.
Artisanal shea nut collection and drying in a rural village in Mali, West Africa. One woman teaches another how to improve her practices in order to make export-quality shea butter. They discuss old practices and why the new ones are better.
In Bambara with English subtitles. (produced by a Peace Corps volunteer)

After watching this video I will buy more REAL shea butter. It's a wonderful product. Great video. Your hard work is recognized. Hope you're fairly compensated.

Of Course they are Not "Fairly" Compensated! In what "Utopia" you know about in the History of Humanity when the smallest, Impoverished Producers, Farmers Fishermen, etc were ever "Fairly Compensated"???

Thank you for posting this video! I spent a lot of time working in different remote villages in W. Africa (including Mali), but unfortunately never saw how the shea nuts were processed. Bravo! Très bien à Minata et Afu!

What if they had the necessary processing equipments, they will, plant more of these, and make lots of money from nuts. Maximizing the economic benefits, saving climate and walking away from poverty, a beehive of activities that could benefit the poor in this community. Women are the main players in this value chain. :)

Hah, I know. Something peculiar to the Africans that found its way into America with the "call and response". You can still see this today in America in gospels, churches, and gatherings where there is a person speaking to a crowd. The crowd will do pretty much what Afu was doing.

This is an excellent video! Our company sells shea butter and we do our best to educate our clients and consultants about the process. We also do our best to purchase from a Fair Trade supplier to make sure that ladies like Aminata and Afu get paid for their work. Shea butter is amazing in the hair and on the skin. The benefits to the skin are simply amazing. Thank you for posting.

Go there and teach them how to run a business. I'm sure it's possible, but they probably need a little start up cash. A pound of shea butter sure is work intensive. It would be like $100 a pound if they got what it was worth.

Sooo so much work payed for less than a penny for us to be able to by cheap, yet 'organic' ''fairtrade'' sheabutter.. I know fairtrade farmers maybe have better conditions, but still. And i think its sad to hear, how they have changed their original way of treatingthe nuts, just because we western buyers dislike the smell from smoked sheynuts in the butter. A lot of negativity, sorry- avery informative vid, but i just get so angry with globalsociety and hierarchy when i see something like this.
@3dsman
@3dsman 5 жыл бұрын
So you propose they keep doing it in the way they've always done it just for the sake of not being willing to change to make an improvement in the quality/yield of the product? That thinking is what's truly sad.
