Wrighty hit the nail on the head at the end when he mentioned Shelvey's ability to pass the ball and take a chance. No one in England's midfield (besides maybe Ali) has the balls to take chances in games. Even Wilshire would have been more forward thinking. But I think that's Southgate's mentality speaking as well. He just wants to go to the world cup and not get embarrassed so that he has the best chance of keeping his job. Rather lose 1-0 playing conservatively than losing 3-0 having a go with forward thinking players. I rate he should have taken players like Shelvey, Wilshire, Deeney, Zaha and Redmond and have a go!

8:18 “You don’t want for anything”. Unfortunately that’s why they don’t want anything else than what they’ve already got. So that’s why they aren’t invested in the goal of winning international honours. They’ve already been given incredible rewards before they’ve done anything worthy of such a reward for England, so when they play for their country, they just don’t want it. Not as much as other teams. Not as much as wales for example, who when they reached the semi-finals of Euro 2016, proved to everyone that nothing mattered as much to them as the football they were playing for their country. It was the biggest thing in their footballing lives, and would have been unique even for Bale. I don’t think that with previous teams for England you could really say that. Certainly not the dross that lost to Iceland. That’s why Waddle was so angry when he said “they’re all just headphones”. They had no hunger to win for England. Yes they cried and lay on the pitch after getting beaten by Iceland, but why? It was as if they couldn’t work out why Iceland were a stronger team than they were, why they had the will, the motivation and they didn’t. I am writing this before we play Panama in the World Cup. We were iffy against Tunisia. Now we SHOULD win today, but if we think we’ve solved our longer term problems that emanate from the premier league and it’s incredible monetary rewards that crush the hunger out of players, then we’ve got another thing coming. The only way we’ll beat Belgium, go through as winners and go on to challenge other teams is by discovering our hunger to win, and that desire to win is not a hunger for rewards. For these players, the taxman will take their money. Ex-wives will take half of what’s left. Hangers-on and cronies will pick over the scraps if they let them and booze and drugs might even claim their share in the end. But victory...victory is its own reward. You keep it forever. Even after death, no one can take it from you. I hope they go out there and play for nothing less than victory today and do their country proud. Come on ENGLAND!

When i was a kid i used to run around pretending to be ian wright, tony yeboah, gazza, shearer. I miss those days because I think american race relations will change the dynamics of this country forever

I've idolised ian wright since i was an 11 year old kid in the playground and I remember I was badly bullied in yr 7 and I used to watch the Ian Wright show. But now I feel like white kids are too segregated and i think that's really sad. Racial segregation in the UK isn't just a problem for black/mixed kids, it's a limitation for white kids too

As a black man I can relate to all your comments. Being from Holloway and an Arsenal fan Ian Wright was my idol. My area was very multicultural and white people have always been in my life. Even the man who wasnt my granddad but was in my life like 1 was white. The diverse culture of London is special to me. Racism never played a part in my life as a child 30 years later as an adult its much different. Oh and I love me some Alison Limerick was going through my vinyls looking at her stuff 30 mins ago.
