Watching in England and I LOVE how you can just run out to a local parts store and they have every little thing you need from 1925 onwards! Here, it's hard work to find anything over 8 years old from anyone other than eBay/Europe! I love your channel. Been watching a lot of your videos and I love how you work and just methodically get all the little jobs done to make the engine run again without a billion dollar white-out unit and all the gear. Such a nice family too. I'm about to recommission a 1992 car that has been sat 15 years with my dad so all of this gives me hope that 15 years is really nothing and it'll be fine! 😊

That's funny. Ive driven by Carolina Driveline several times while I lived in Boiling Springs. 😄 And man.....I love when cars sound loud like that. Don't care if they're fast, just like the loud. I'm half deaf, so I'm glad that last backfire my car did blew out my exhaust. 😆 Now I can hear my car running. Runs so smooth sometimes I didn't know if it stalled or not. And I swear I've seen that old blue truck on the road before.

Need to raise the idle a bit, the transfer slots are covered. Also, sounds like the centrifugal advance in the distributor may be stuck. You all are doing a great job bringing the old girl back to life, keep up the great work. Love your channel. It appears you and your dad have a great time doing it together. I wish my son had an interest in mechanical areas, but he does his own thing. Keep on truckin' guys!

Nice to see you back to work on the Comet! Don't let the casting numbers fool you on the '68 small-block. 302 was introduced this year but Ford was dropping leftover 289 cranks in the new blocks. I owned one back in the 80's. Check the casting on the crank, not the block.

Oh the joy of a gummed up SBF. Was the same on mine, spent a day scraping and vacuuming. I then filled up with some modern junk oil, fitted a new filter, drove for 200 miles, dumped than oil and repeated this time for 1200 miles, followed by another change using a good brand containing zinc additive. Oil pressure at over 1200 RPM is always over 40 psi and engine runs cooler even in European summer temperatures. The only additional thing I'd have done would if I were you is to clean the rubbish in the heads too (maybe you've done it already).

I appreciate that fact that you are willing to throw a blanket down on the red dirt and crawl under a car like a lot of us have, but wow that jack stand was leaning like the tower of Pisa, maybe it was just a bad camera angle and she was straight.

Had a '63&1/2 Falcon Sprint (Similar) except 4 speed floor shift. Had that snarly sound to it, and loved the way it operated. It would do a fantastic "burn-out", but top speed was restricted by low gear ratio and red lined on tach at 3200. Out-dragged many muscle big-bore, high tuned 402's and hot Plymouths and Pontiacs.

If valve seals do any good you will be lucky. Those engines were prone to wearing out the valve guides, which were actually only holes drilled in the head. I had a 289 and a 351 Windsor and both had to have the heads drilled and valve guides pressed in. The 351 had some clown knurl the heads before I got it and as a result I had to replace 11 valves. That was the only problem I had with either engine and they lasted fine after that.

WHAT YOU NEED IS WHEN YOU REBUILD THE ENGINE IS TO GO ABOUT 30 OVER ON THE PISTONS. Get a set of ported windsor 400 heads with a set of headers to flow all that good air through the system. top it off with a couple of magnaflow mufflers out the back. Then you will have you a nice running 302 boss. Might want to go through the trans for sure ,and also fix the shifter so it shifts properly. I agree with JK below that jackstand just isn't right brother. By the way Harbor frieght is recalling those stands. I just got the e-mail today from them.

Very cool to see the Comet again! Man that car is cool. A Cyclone hood would be cool. My choice has always been the hood with the tear drop scoop ( like the 64 Thunderbolts, light weight Galaxies and A/FX Mustangs had ) . That reverse shifter set up is because the transmission came out of a car that had a column shifter. The shift arm on the transmission is facing the wrong direction. To fix it requires finding a shift arm assembly out of a transmission from a floor shift car. Then drop the transmission pan. You also need to drop the valvebody. Then remove the kick down arm shaft, a large nut and the whole shift arm shaft slides out. Or the better fix would be just swap in a 4 or 5 spd!! And it sounds like you might need to increase the idle speed a little and tune the accelerator pump some. It does sound good.

I've been waiting for this comet for a while and you are freaking hilarious, had me rolling in the floor laughing at your crazy tail. But I'm glad that this one is running and getting stuff done to it. You can really make a awesome car out of this thing and you can make it really fast easy and cheap. I laughed my ass off when you were talking about the new aluminum iron intake that was so light that it took both of you to pick it up and put it in and you stole my trick by leaving the distributor in it . I see ppl all the time taking them out when you don't have to but yeah this thing needs a big cam a real aluminum intake, Holley 650 dp, headers and some cheap aluminum heads off of Ebay for 550 for the set . That thing will scream and probably clear up the smoke because it doesn't smoke all the time so those cheap heads on Ebay for 550 shipped will have it running strong. Just punch in gt40 heads and they will pop up if you are planning on going that far with it and it will be so much faster. There is a whole top end kit for 800 also for heads intake roller rockers if u are planning on making a cheap hotrod out of it I know I would cause I love that car it is cool. But anyway I can't wait to see more on it so keep the videos coming and keep acting crazy because it makes me laugh my ass off, you are funny as hell and and would be cool to hang around 🤣😂😆🚗💨💨💨💨💨💨💨

The quickest ride at my hometown street drags was a 4 door Mercury Comet. 302 4B with a manual tranny. wasn't the fastest but got to the end of the quarter quicker. Of course the guy driving it could probably trade cars with you and still beat you. I saw that 302 defeat 426 Hemi's and 440 magnums. Problem for the more powerful cars was they'd spin tires while the comet would just shoot on down the road. I think that was was about a 70 model, at that time just couple year old used car. Didn't even belong to my buddy, he would borrow it from the used car lot he worked at. I think his boss caught on the second time it needed rear tires. lol.

In '71 i had a '65 vw beetle, a Wolfsburg trained mechanic talked me into doing "things and stuff" to it. Cost of parts, 40$, and a quart of tequila each time he worked his magic. He lowered the front and put a straight axle on it, then the engine transaxle. 3500$ just on the engine, dual Webber two barrels. That bug ate v8 Chevy and Ford's alive. Last run on the 1/4 I shut down short of the traps, still won, 117mph 3500 doesn't sound like much, but minimum wage was 1.65$ an hour then

Back in the 60s and earlier there was no detergent oil. The result was loads of sludge. My Dad was a backyard mechanic. One of the jobs he use to do for friends is clean out the sludge on the oil returns on the heads. I myself use to do the same thing. I would soak the rocker arms and pushrods in easy off oven cleaner. That's how bad the sludge was.
