Hey Graham, we changed out the feed barriers last week in the slatted shed. We installed condon slanted bar barriers and very happy with the quality. They are higher than the old barriers that were done 30 years ago. Changed because we are feeding more round bales and the cattle were pulling in the silage and this new barrier would help stop this. Use the comfort slats from easy fix on some of the slats they are in Ballinasloe and cattle stay very clean and don’t slip but they are wearing down a bit at the barrier so replace the strip here last year 2023. Just for information Good luck

The pillars are ipe 200 they are a lighter than the grant sheds but the specs are over kill on those sheds as far as I con see The amount of old hay sheds that were built with 6x3 and 7 x3 1/2 with no diagonal braces or walls on open sites and are still standing. I’ve seen wider sheds using the same specs steel and withstand a snow loading along with winds By using deep knee braces and gussets along with stiffeners at stress points make all the difference

Yea i agree with you there Graham the grant sheds are over engineered speaking from experience a do it yourself sheds are way cheaper now that you've got the building bug another shed will be slaped up up at the back of that one I'm sure I'll give you 2 years.@Grahamkavanaghfarming

Hi Graham, fantastic video as always. I have O'Donovan locking barriers they're a good job with suckler cows, only thing i done differently was i put a 50x50 box iron upright in the center of the span into the stub wall and bolted the barrier top and bottom to it after makes it super strong and stops the barrier flexing when cows are pushing out for silage.
@Kavanaghfarming2 ай бұрын
Ya I’d imagine the would put a lot of pressure on them when they all are pushing

Well Graham, new watcher; tell us a bit about the farm, how many cows, how many acres, calving time of year, grass or cereals, what ration do you feed & what age for finishing period & slaughter ages?

Will be going into a lot of your questions in the coming videos

Hi Graham, Green comfort mat for me. Prefer them over flat and curved Easi-Fix. Yes- more expensive on Day 1. Found curved Easi Fix hard to lie on and not snug for heavier stock. Definitely put in the locking barriers. Have locking barriers in all the sheds now and couldn't manage without them. So convenient compared to turning cows over to the crush. And a health and safety must in my opnion. I don't recommend running a bull on any of type slat mats / slats - recipe for disaster Recommend small simple calf crush/race in back of shed for injecting a calf that's unwell if using it as a calf creep area

Hi Trevor how’s the bull job going this year Is there anyone around selling those mats
@trevormasterson70932 ай бұрын
@@Kavanaghfarming Bulls for using this Autumn are sold. Had planned on keeping 2 very good bulls for Roscrea- but sold ex yard. Lots of bulls for the spring however.

Good video as always Graham. I take it the shed will not house fattening cattle?
@Kavanaghfarming2 ай бұрын
Will be for cows over winter and fatteners when cows go out

@@Kavanaghfarming very good, if budget allows….it was the best thing we did on our new shed two years ago but we fitted sliding doors above the precast wall at the back of pens. Meaning we could control ventilation much better whether it be stopping the rain that u pointed out that can come in thru spaced sheeting or fully opening up shed during summer when fattening cattle are in.
@bryanpaul95422 ай бұрын
For ventilation push the bottom of your back side sheets out 3 inches. And then a raised ridge and you will have no dam straw
@Kavanaghfarming2 ай бұрын
Ya Paul thinking of that idea aswell but I’ll push it out about 8inch

We put in comfort mats 5 years green ones .verry comfortable can be a bit slippy .but I haven't had any problems. Put I don't run a bull but their is lots of rising . Can't speak about other mats only to say green are much softer to walk on .Great progres on shed .getting more green mats soon

@tangofoxtrot46032 ай бұрын
my neighbour has both black and green brand slat mats only difference he found was the cattle were much cleaner on the green ones,
@Kavanaghfarming2 ай бұрын
I’ve heard good things about the green ones they seem very plastic like which I thought they would be slippery
@EdwardBrady-ls6up2 ай бұрын
Hi .why did u go with timber on the roof instead of steel purlins.
@Kavanaghfarming2 ай бұрын
Galv purlins not for over cattle will rust and painted works out a lot dearer also with the wider span gates and barriers need to be that bit stronger
@EdwardBrady-ls6up2 ай бұрын
I didt think they would rust .
@tomgreene18432 ай бұрын
Will you be able to vary the pen sizes with moveable barriers and have a restraining gate for calving ? Job going on nicely.
@Kavanaghfarming2 ай бұрын
Ya will have deviding gates along slats so be able to adjust pen size
@Imtheman19772 ай бұрын
Would you consider the perforated sheets for ventilation?
@Kavanaghfarming2 ай бұрын
Have been looking into them and I think there isn’t enough air space in them you need at least half the area in the ridge gap to be in each wall, and also block easily with cob webs dust etc
@ThomasOtoole-t1y2 ай бұрын
Shed is taking shape Graham fine job locking barriers, the say the silent ones are the best have rubbers on not steel on steel
